Nicole Chikwe: 7 Tips to Try Today For A Clearer Complexion and Flawless Skin

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photos-black-beauty-short-hair-perfect-skin-image34546993

Hi Everyone!

There’s a lot of information out there on skincare products and ingredients that are good for fighting blemishes, but great skin doesn’t only come from what you put on your skin but from adopting certain habits too. Here are some handy tips to go hand in hand with your skincare routine that’ll keep your skin in tip top shape.

1) Disinfect Your Phone

Hands in the air if you regularly sanitise your phone. Yes, just as I thought. I only see a few. Tsk tsk guys! Everyone please go out and buy some hand sanitiser today, and every evening apply some to a cotton pad and wipe down your phone. Phones apparently carry more bacteria than a toilet bowl (yuck), and we are constantly holding a major source of bacteria next to our cheeks, or holding it in our hands and touching our faces (double yuck). So please sanitise in order to reduce exposing your skin and keeping it as clean and healthy as possible.

2) Tweak Your Diet

Does sugar cause acne? Yes! Too much insulin in your bloodstream can trigger the growth of pore clogging cells and boost sebum production. Excess Sebum + Dead Skin Cells = Pore Blockage. So avoid refined sugary snacks and drinks and make the switch from High Glycemic Index foods like white bread and rice to Low Glycemic Index foods like sweet potatoes (I actually love these and can eat them everyday), oatmeal and bulgur wheat.

3) Exercise

This works in two ways. Exercise reduces stress (stress leads to your hormone levels becoming imbalanced, leading to breakouts), and physical activity increases blood circulation which sends more oxygen to your skin cells and carries cell waste away, leaving your pores cleaner and clearer. However, don’t forget to shower afterwards because all that waste, oil and dirt can actually break you out. Life is truly a conundrum.

4) Up Your Water Intake

I’ve mentioned this HERE before, but it’s worth mentioning again – your skin is 64% water. Your skin is also the largest body organ and the last organ to receive any water that you consume. So if you aren’t drinking enough, your skin becomes dehydrated, leading to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin could also increase oil production to make up for the lack of moisture which could lead to pore blockages and therefore blemishes. So drink at least 2 litres a day, and if you are a real G make it 3!

5) Drink Some Tea

We all know that drinking certain types of teas have great health benefits – but did you know that some teas are good for your complexion as well? Tea is packed with antioxidants which can keep your skin hydrated and radiant, reduce inflammation and reverse sun damage. My two favourite Glow Inducing Teas areGreen Tea which is loaded with anti aging minerals, and Rooibos Tea which is amazing for acne inflammation. Another tea that is currently getting a lot of buzz in beauty circles for fighting blemishes is Spearmint Tea, as it is said to balance hormones – so if you suffer from hormonal acne (which is truly the worst, I’ve been there) this might be worth a try!

6) Change Your Pillowcases Often

Not changing pillowcases regularly can lead to Acne Mechanica – which is any type of acne that is caused by materials or objects touching your face. Pillowcases carry a lot of dirt and oil from your skin and hair, and pressing your freshly cleansed face against this at night for HOURS means you could wake up to clogged pores and blemishes.

7) Clean Your Makeup Tools

Makeup brushes and tools also harbour bacteria and dead skin cells which could also lead to the aforementioned Acne Mechanica, so it is important to wash them every week and use an antibacterial spray after each use to keep your brushes and tools sanitised. If you get your makeup done by a professional, always ask if they could kindly spray the brushes before they are used on you (in your presence) because I have heard several horror stories about unclean tools and eye infections, skin irritations and all sorts.

And that’s it folks! There’s no point in investing so much money on skincare products if you are unknowingly negating what you are working towards, so give some (or all if you can) of these tips a try.

Jasmine Zik: From Crochet Braids to Ghana Weaving – Here’s how Protective Styles Can Help Your Hair

dreamstime_l_20352918
In some parts of the world it’s all sunshine, while in some other parts it’s “hello, rain!” Whatever season you are in, protecting your hair should always be priority.

Protective styles are best known for their versatility, manageability (up-and-go) and ability to help retain already achieved hair length. There’s also the myth that protective styling has the ability to make hair grow, this largely depends on what, how & when they were installed! They help give you a different look while keeping your hair shielded from the stress of combing/styling/tugging etc. More like your cover up buddy especially for the ladies that their husbands or boyfriends have not yet embraced or fallen in love with their natural hair/look.

Let’s hit the nail on the head.

Protective styles ought not to be boring, you can switch them up by adding some color, unraveling twists, packing differently or straightening them. Some of them are super easy to install and take out, and they are pretty stylish as well.

Get the best out of protective styling

Remember that saying, “how you make your bed is how you’ll lie on it?” it totally applies to your hair care too! How you treat your hair before, during and after a protective style determines what outcome you get consequently. Here are few points to keep in mind for awesome results:
Prep your hair before installing: Follow this order for best results; detangle, deep condition, wash, moisturize, stretch!
Make sure they are not too tight: Some styles can be heavy and pull out your edges and sometimes cause boils on the scalp making you uncomfortable to sleep at night
Don’t keep them in for too long: allow your hair breathe a little! Yes we know you’re busy and we know that style makes you slay or maybe the economy is telling on your pockets. You can always learn to do some easy styles yourself or create time to take them out. Keeping them in for too long can do more harm than good.
Don’t forget to be patient when taking them out and pamper your hair a little with good hair care afterwards!

Protective styles to try

While the list may be endless, here are a few styles you can try:
Crotchet Braids: This is, for me by far the most easy to install and take out yet so versatile! They come in braids, twists, twist outs, faux locs, kinky, curly… you name it!
Faux locs: Another one of my faves maybe cos they look like dreads. It’s super easy to install too! I’ll describe it as African threading that matured because its the same method but different products (you may choose wool or kinky hair).
Flat Twists: You can achieve this without the use of any extensions, just solely your mane.
Braids(3strands/Twist): You may braid your hair or twist it. The great part about this style is that you may or may not choose to use any extensions to achieve this. They can be short, medium or long in length depending on what you choose.
Cornrows (Ghana weaving): Cornrows are beautiful especially when a little twist is added to them. You may also get Ghana weavings done in the same manner.
Weave ons: So yes, you’re not a fan of braids or you feel they don’t look good on you or maybe braiding your natural hair makes you look too young. Weave are a perfect solution. You could yank up your weaves – brazillian, peruvian, malaysian, indian, Funmi hair, yaki or whatever you have and do sew-ins! They are just as good, the only thing is you’ll be needing a comb/brush to keep it neat over time, unlike the other styles.

'Kanye asked Taylor for permission in song but didn't ask me before using naked wax image of me in video?'- Amber Rose asks

Amber Rose says her ex, Kanye West should have contacted her to seek permission before using a naked wax figure of her in his controversial video 'famous' just the same way he called Taylor Swift to ask for her permission before recording the song.

She said in a sneak peek of The Amber Rose Show:

'So, I say all of that to say, why didn't I get a phone call for using a naked wax figure in your video Kanye? I mean, Taylor gets a call but I don't get a call. So please stay the f**k out of the news so I don't need to talk about your ass anymore.'

Her comments come after she supported the rapper in the ongoing feud between him, his wife Kim Kardashian and singer Taylor Swift.

Speaking on her show, Amber said she believes Kanye West would never use derogatory lyrics about Taylor Swift in his song without asking for her permission as she was by his side during the 2009 VMA's and knew how he felt bad after the media furore that followed his humiliation of the singer on stage.
