Lawmakers who defect to another party should lose their seats - INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for prohibition of defection of lawmakers from one political party to another.

The suggestion was made on Friday November 9 in Abuja at the presentation of its ‘Report of the 2019 General Election’.

The report recommended that  “defectors should automatically lose their seats except in the case of merger of two or more parties”, and also called for amendment of the constitution to back the recommendation.

There was also a proposal for the “creation of electoral offences commission and tribunal with powers to arrest, investigate and prosecute electoral offenders; automation of the nomination process to facilitate the storage, access and retrieval of candidates’ data. Sourcing of its ad hoc personnel from its pool of retired staff, delivery of all non-sensitive election materials to states and FCT offices 30 days to any election so as ensure proper audit and quality assurance; need to review the criteria for recruiting collation officers and returning officers”.

INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood noted that some of the recommendations either require administrative action by the commission or amendments to the existing electoral legal framework by the national assembly.

He said;

“Some of the recommendations that require administrative action by INEC are already being implemented resulting in improved management of the electoral process as seen in the recent off-cycle Governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.

“We are similarly engaging with the National Assembly on aspects of the recommendations that require legislative action.

“It is my hope that making the two reports public will promote a better understanding of the issues and challenges associated with the conduct of the 2019 General Election and as important resource materials for research.

“It is my hope that it will serve as the promotion of a broader national discourse on the necessary reforms required for the continued delivery of peaceful, free, fair, credible, inclusive and safe elections in Nigeria.’

Joe Biden has been elected as the 46th President of the United States of America.

The democrat who turns 78 next month, will become the oldest president when he is inaugurated in January 2021 in the North American country.

Biden edged President Trump, who in the days since voting ended has falsely claimed a premature victory and said Democrats were trying to steal the election. The Trump campaign is still contesting the process in several states, and said in a statement Friday morning: "This election is not over."

In a cinematic twist, it was Biden's boyhood state of Pennsylvania that put him over the 270 electoral vote threshold and delivered the White House. Trump had held a wide lead over Biden on the night of the election, but as election officials counted hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots, the race shifted dramatically in Biden's favor, infuriating Trump and his allies, who knew the President's path to the White House was over without the commonwealth.

In the final days of the race, Biden's team redoubled their efforts to rebuild the Democrats' "blue wall" -- and that gambit paid off with Biden winning Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

With his win, Biden has become the first former vice president to win the White House since George H.W. Bush in 1988; the second Roman Catholic in U.S. history elected president; and he'll be the first president to call Delaware home.

Kamala Harris has also become the first female vice president of the United States with the win. She is also the first black and South Asian Vice President.

The win has also made President Trump the first one-term President of the United States in 30 years.

President Donald Trump has insisted that he won the 2020 presidential election in the United States of America.

The US President shared series of tweets on Saturday November 7, in which he made unsubstantiated allegations of illegality in the voting process - all of which were labelled as disputed and potentially misleading by Twitter. He also insisted he had won the election "by a lot".

Trump tweeted;

CNN also reported that sources in the White House have disclosed that the President said he won't be accepting the election result. They also disclosed that he will be challenging the election result in court from Monday November 9.

LIB reported that Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States, achieving a decades-long political ambition and denying Donald Trump a second term after a deeply divisive presidency defined by a once-in-a-century pandemic, economic turmoil and social unrest.

Biden won the presidency by clinching Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes, after several days of painstaking vote counting following record turnout across the country. The win in Pennsylvania, which the Associated Press called at 11:25am EST on Saturday with 99% of the votes counted, took Biden’s electoral college vote to 284, surpassing the 270 needed to win the White House.
