Three gunmen carry out attack on a five-star hotel in Pakistan

At least three gunmen were reported to be in the Pearl Continental Hotel in Gwadar, Pakistan, where at least 70 people, including 40 Chinese citizens, are lodged in.

Unconfirmed reports claim that many guests at the hotel have already been safely evacuated.

Police are presently at the scene, with local media stating that a shoot out is taking place between officers and the armed assailants.

Balochistan Home Minister Ziaullah Langove said there appeared to be casualties but the number cannot be ascertained yet.

The attack comes just weeks after 14 people, including 11 security personnel, were killed by gunmen near Ormara in Gwadar.

PDP should not drag the presidency into the smear campaign against the presidency - Garba Shehu

Read the statement by Garba Shehu below.

The Presidency has admonished the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to stop dragging the presidency into their current sponsored media smear campaign against the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa.

Reports claiming that an agency of the government, the Department of State Services, DSS has indicted Bulkachuwa of corruption are the latest of this sponsored campaign aimed at causing disaffection between the Executive and the Judiciary, the two arms of government that had operated smoothly under the present dispensation.

While the PDP and its candidates are free to exercise their right to challenge the results of the 2019 presidential election, it is unacceptable to drag the name of the President or other organs of the executive branch into the campaign of character assassination against the President of the Court of Appeal.

The DSS doesn't conduct its duties in the manner so described and you can't use a fake security report to drag the presidency into a smear campaign against the President of the Court of Appeal.

Attacking judges because the outcomes of cases don't favour you and keeping quiet when the verdict is in your favour smacks of insincerity, double standard and mischief. Intimidating and impugning the character of judges in order to force them to bow to blackmail is against the spirit of an independent judiciary.

The PDP praised the verdict of the Osun gubernatorial election tribunal because it favoured them, but they are now singing a different tune because they lost their appeal. We cannot keep changing the definition of an independent judiciary to suit our political convenience and bias without ultimately creating chaos in the system.

If the PDP continues to blackmail and smear judges with fake news stories, we will ultimately find ourselves dealing with a situation where judges may be afraid to handle cases, thereby creating delays in the dispensation of justice.

If the presidency had any influence on election petition tribunals, APC candidates wouldn't have lost a single case before the courts.

Ryanair passengers forced to restrain male passenger threatening to kill everyone on plane

Passengers on a Ryanair plane were forced to restrain a man after he allegedly assaulted passengers and threatened an air hostess with a fire extinguisher.

In a video shared online, the man is seen shouting that he would "kill everyone" on board the Ryanair flight while being held down.

Jodie Fisher, 27, from Manchester, was travelling with her sister Jeorgia, 20, on the flight from Manchester to Gran Canaria on Saturday when the incident happened.

She said: "I could hear this guy at the front of the plane shouting and screaming things at other passengers. He came to the front of the plane and started throwing cups all over the floor of the plane. There were three members of cabin crew – one male and two females, but they were all Spanish so I think they struggled to understand him."

She added that the passenger had threatened a female air steward with a fire extinguisher before he attacked her and her sister when they intervened.

She said: "He grabbed hold of my top and ripped it. He broke my phone and ripped my watch off my wrist. He bit my sister on the arm and he was about to bite me on the leg before a man and a woman came over and jumped on him. Passengers and crew had to hold him down on the floor for about 45 minutes – it was awful.

The erratic passenger was detained when the plane reached Gran Canaria.

A Ryanair spokesperson said: "The crew of this flight from Manchester to Gran Canaria on May 4 requested police assistance upon landing after a passenger became disruptive mid-flight.

"The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority.

"This passenger has been banned from flying with Ryanair again and this is now a matter for local police."

New mum brutally battered by husband three days after giving birth to their child

A man has been jailed for brutally beating his wife three days after she gave birth before assaulting her 13-year-old daughter

Gary Peoples, 40, punched Kerry Armstrong in the face and kicked her in the head, leaving her with severe bruising and swelling. As he hit her, Kelly crouched over her newborn daughter to protect her.

During the court hearing, a barrister for the Public Prosecution Service told Judge McCaffrey that three days after the birth of their daughter, Ms Armstrong and Peoples had an argument in the bedroom of their flat.

Ms Armstrong had her newborn baby daughter in her arms but this didn't stop the attack. Peoples punched her on the face and after she fell to the floor he then kicked her to the head. She crouched over the baby in order to protect her during the assault.

When her 13-year-old daughter came into the bedroom, Peoples grabbed her and pushed her up against the wall.

The prosecutor said Peoples initially prevented his wife from leaving their home but she eventually got out of the front door and drove to her mother’s home from where her brother reported the assaults to the police. Peoples was then arrested.

In court, Gary Peoples admitted assaulting his wife, as well as his step-daughter in the same incident on October 2 2017. A defence barrister said People accepted it was a terrible way for him to have behaved towards his wife so soon after she’d given birth to their daughter.

After her husband was jailed for 20 months by Judge Elizabeth McCaffrey at the Crown Court in Derry, Ms Armstrong said she was glad the judicial system had worked for her. She advised women suffering abuse to seek help and not remain silent.

Steve Harvey's 'Daytime Talk Show' cancelled after two seasons

Steve Harvey’s syndicated daytime talk show “Steve” will end its run in June.

Steve taped its final episode on Thursday which will serve as a series finale and will air in June. Kelly Clarkson’s daytime chatfest will take Steve‘s place on NBC owned-and-operated affiliates later in the year.

Steve‘s cancellation doesn’t mean the comedian is out of work: He also is the current host of Family Feud.

Harvey hosted The Steve Harvey Show for five seasons. That endeavor wrapped in May 2017, after which Harvey partnered with IMG to retool the daytime offering and call it Steve.

Production of the series also moved from Chicago to Los Angeles at that time. The shiny, new Steve launched in September 2017.

Photos: EFCC seizes Saraki’s Ikoyi houses

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized some houses belonging to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

According to reports, the houses are said to be located at 15a, 15b and 17, MacDonald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

This development comes after the EFCC recently opened a fresh probe into Saraki’s activities while he was governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011. The EFCC in a statement sent to the Kwara state government, said that Saraki is to be investigated for an alleged case of conspiracy, abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds, theft, and money laundering.

The houses that were recently seized, were part of Saraki’s trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) at the beginning of his Senate Presidency. The suit was later dismissed for lack of evidence.

Confirming the sealing of the property, Saraki's spokesperson, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in a statement released, said

“Our attention has been drawn to the fact that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has marked certain property belonging to Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, obviously under the claim that they are subjects of investigation.

“The action of the EFCC only reinforced our earlier stated position that their current investigation is mischievous, contrary to the tenets of the rule of law and only aimed at settling scores.

“This position is founded on the fact that these same buildings were the subject of earlier investigations by the EFCC, as well as the case initiated by the Federal Government at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

“Also, the case went all the way to the highest court in our country, the Supreme Court of Nigeria. In that case, Dr. Saraki was discharged and acquitted because the courts believe the government has no case.”

There are claims that the EFCC is keeping Saraki under surveillance before May 29th when he will be asked to come forward for questionning.
