At least 68 die in huge fire after Venezuela prison riot

No fewer than 68 people have died after fire swept through the cell area inside a police station in Venezuela.

The country’s chief prosecutor, Attorney General Tarek William Saab, said that nearly all the dead were prisoners. He said two women who were staying overnight at the station were also killed, but did not provide any further details.

The blaze is said to have followed a riot by detainees being held at the state police headquarters in Valencia, a town in Carabobo state about 100 miles west of Caracas. Following the sad incident, angry relatives gathered outside the station to find out if their loved ones died in the fire. The relatives demanded to know if their loved ones survived and this led to a clash with police officers in riot gear. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

"I don’t know if my son is dead or alive! They haven’t told me anything," cried Aida Parra, who said she last saw her son a day before, when she went to deliver food to him.

Photos from the scene showed prisoners being taken out on stretchers, their limbs frozen in awkward positions as skin peeled off. Outside the police station, some relatives buried their hands in their faces and cried in anguish. Others had to be held up with the support of friends and family as they collapsed in despair. While some wept quietly and clutched their hands in prayer.

This is not the first time such will happen in a country where human rights groups complain about bad prison conditions. A fire at a prison in the western state of Zulia killed more than 100 inmates in 1994.

Parish priest condemns President Buhari’s trip to Lagos, says it’s holy Thursday

Rev. Fr. Anthony Okoro, the Parish Priest of St Christopher Catholic Church, Oke Odo, Lagos has faulted the planned visit of President Buhari to Lagos state on Thursday, noting that the timing was wrong.

“Holy Thursday and Good Friday are special days for Christians to reflect the Paschal mysteries. The organizers didn’t take into account the nature of the days. I humbly conclude that such ignorance is not excusable and should not repeat itself lest, it gives room for interpretation”, he said.

The parish priest made this known via his official facebook handle on Wednesday. According to him, “as a Lagosian by birth and as one who has spent all his life in Lagos, it is a thing of joy that our President will be visiting. “This visit will draw federal attention to Lagos and will bring many more benefits to Lagos. On like Jonathan’s visit that was more of a campaign than a working visit. “However, the visit was not well timed and should not take place on the most holy week of Christians. I am very sure the president, an ardent Muslim will not go on a working visit to any state on two of the most important days of Muslims.

“This visit has led to diversion of traffic, restrictions of movement, and other security measures put in place. In addition, the president will arrive on Thursday (Holy Thursday) and conclude the visit on Friday (Good Friday). “These are special days for Christians to reflect the Paschal mysteries. The organizers didn’t take into account the nature of the days. I humbly conclude that such ignorance is not excusable and should not repeat itself lest, it gives room for interpretation. “I wish the president and Lagosians the best but I will be in church fulfilling my religious obligations. God bless Nigeria. Happy Holy week to all Christians

Nigerians are vexing after a woman shared this tweet... see Twitter reactions (screenshots)

A Nigerian lady shared a tweet about her relative's relationship choices and how it turned out and people angry with the choice she made.

Adannaya told of how her relative had two suitors, a rich man and a poor man, but she chose the rich one. Apparently, people were expecting it to end with her regretting her choice for choosing the rich man, but when it didn't end that way, they called her and her relative out for choosing a rich guy over a poor one.

However, she also had some Twitter users who defended her and asked questions like; why are people so angry that she chose the rich guy? Is it now a crime to marry rich? and when did marrying poor mean that more happiness will be guaranteed?

In all, Adannaya was calm about it and replied lightly to most of the angry words thrown at her.
