French doctor apologizes after asking for new Coronavirus drug to be tested in Africa

Jean Paul Mira, the French doctor who alongside his colleague Camille Locht asked for a new Coronavirus drug to be tested in Africa, has apologized after their statement triggered a worldwide outrage.

LIB reported earlier that Jean Paul Mira and Camille Locht who spoke on a live TV interview, insisted that Africa is the best place to conduct such test as they recalled how an experimental treatment for AIDS was carried out in Africa.

The dcotors were discussing about a "repurposed" tuberculosis vaccine as a COVID-19 beater during an expert chat on television, when the suggestion was made. The drug is currently being trialled in several European countries and Australia.

Mira, who is the intensive care unit (ICU) head at the Cochin hospital in Paris has now apologized over his comment which incited an outcry.

In a statement released on Friday April 3, Mira's employer, the Paris network of hospitals quoted him saying:

"I want to present all my apologies to those who were hurt, shocked and felt insulted by the remarks that I clumsily expressed on LCI this week."

Coronavirus: House of Representatives propose bill that will allow Nigerians enjoy free electricity supply for two months

The House of Representatives has announced plans to consider a fresh Stimulus Bill that will ensure that Nigerians get free electricity supply for two months during this Coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement released this evening, the Speaker said the proposed Bill is to help in boosting the economy through the informal sector as the country prepares for the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak. The proposed Bill, which will be the second Stimulus Bill by the Green Chamber, is to be considered immediately the House reconvenes from its ongoing break, declared due to the pandemic.

Gbajabiamila announced this at the National Assembly today during a meeting between the National Assembly leadership and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmad, the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze, among others.

Explaining the necessity for the proposed electricity stimulus bill, the Speaker said electricity, being a commodity consumed by every household, has a greater impact on Nigerians and that since more Nigerians are in the informal sector, the effects would be more felt by the economy.

It is one thing that will touch every household. As I said earlier, when we engaged, I discussed with the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) that packaged whatever they would require, if the government can give them, for us to allow for two months free electricity for Nigerians, they would be able to guarantee it.

We have the figures. I think we should look very seriously into that as part of our package for economic stimulus, because stimulus means something that will stimulate the economy. When you are stimulating the economy, most of it will come from the informal sector.

When you are saving people their electricity and the fact that they now have stable electricity for two months, you are also saving the monies that would go into the payment of those bills at least for two months.” he said

Police officer demoted for assaulting medical doctor during Coronavirus lockdown in Akwa Ibom

A police officer deployed to the Akwa Ibom State command has been demoted for assaulting a medical doctor while enforcing the stay-at-home order of the Akwa Ibom government.

Recall that the Akwa Ibom State government had exempted health workers from its lockdown order, which was effected to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

The police sergeant, Edidiong Alexander assaulted Dr Daniel Edet who is a surgeon with the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, while on his way to work on Friday evening.

It was gathered that the police began investigating the incident after the Nigerian Medical Association threatened to embark on a strike over the assault incident which left Mr Edet’s hand fractured.

The police office who was found guilty after the investigation was concluded, was demoted from the rank of a sergeant to corporal. The state's commissioner of police, Imohimi Edgal also met with Mr Edet and the chairman of NMA in the state, and apologised to the surgeon and the medical doctors in Akwa Ibom over the conduct of the police officer.

Akwa Ibom state has only recorded five confirmed cases of the coronavirus, since the outbreak of the disease in the country.

Kaduna correctional service finally admits inmates died during riot over suspected Coronavirus case

The Kaduna State command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) has finally admitted that some of its inmates died during a riot over a suspected case of Coronavirus in the facility.

LIB reported earlier that the riot ensued after the inmates demanded to be released following claims of an awaiting trial inmate infecting two other inmates with Coronavirus.

Controller of the Kaduna Command of the Correctional Centre, Sanusi Muazu Danmusa however debunked claims of an inmate of the facility being infected with Coronavirus at that time. He described the uprising as a "mere misunderstanding" and further stated that there was no casulty in the commotion at the correctional facility.

However after a civil society organisation, Lygel Youths and Leadership Initiative challenged the authorities to release the details of the dead victims while insisting that they were still being economical with the truth, the authorities at both the centre in Kaduna and the service’s headquarters in Abuja made a U-turn and stated that only two of its officers were injured and that no fatality was recorded.

After being confronted with the details of inmates reportedly killed by security operatives on Friday April 3, spokesperson of the NCS, Austin Njoku started asking for the source of the report. As at Friday, he told Premium Times that 16 personnel of the service had suffered various degrees of injuries and no death was recorded. He also said the incident was still being investigated by a committe and a report was yet to be submitted.

On Saturday April 4, the NCS made another U-turn and also admitted that 4 inmates of the facility died in the riot.

The Kaduna State command controller of corrections, Sanusi Danmusa said in the statement;

“This release is necessary to assure the public that the COMMAND and indeed the Service are not trying to hide any fact as purported by a section of the press, especially when life is involved. Four inmates later died in the hospital from the injuries sustained in the melee that ensued while being restrained by the custodial officers from breaking jail. For the avoidance of doubt, all the deceased inmates were from the condemned section of the Custodial Centre where the jail-break occurred.

“A comprehensive investigation has commenced on the directive of the controller general of the Nigeria correctional service, Alhaji Jafaru Ahmed.”

The executive director of LYLI, Lekan Oladapo, has however insisted that the correctional centre has not told the whole truth.

He said;

“The authorities need to controvert the claim that the other dead inmates were awaiting trial. The statement it issued is simply an afterthought and an attempt to save face and without any substance.

“Why did it take them that long to reveal that inmates died? Why were they quick to claim their people suffered injury? It is all against logic.”

Kenyan Pastor investigated in UK for selling oil he claims can protect his members from Coronavirus

A Kenyan Pastor and founder of Bishop Climate Ministries in Camberwell District in South London, Climate Irungu Wiseman is currently under investigation in the UK for selling an oil he claimed could protect his members against Coronavirus.

According to a report by Independent UK, the Pastor who sold the bottle of the oil at £91 (N40,950) each, was accused of exploiting the public by selling the so-called “plague protection” kits, consisting of oil and red yarn.

A post by Bishop Climate Irungu Wiseman read;

“It is by faith that you can be saved from the Coronavirus pandemic by covering yourself with the Divine Plague Protection Oil and wearing the Scarlet Yarn on your body."

Bishop Climate had claimed in a post shared on March 21, that he was “instructed” by the Lord to prepare an oil “mixed with cedar wood, hyssop, and prayer” for the pandemic.

He said;

“As you use this oil, along with a special scarlet yarn, every coronavirus and any other deadly thing will pass over you.”

The Kenyan Pastor further claimed that his product has worked before and will work again. Another page on the group’s website suggested followers could pay up to £910 for “sacrificial seed of divine protection” for their family.

The charities regulator has now launched an urgent probe into the Camberwell church over its sale of the oil it claimed could protect from coronavirus.

A spokesperson of the agency said;

“We are looking into the serious concern about Kingdom Church GB’s alleged sale of false COVID-19 protection devices, as a matter of urgency.

“We have opened a regulatory compliance case to assess the matter, and will be liaising as appropriate with other agencies.”

Southwark Council also confirmed that the church is being investigated over the products. Councillor Victoria Mills said in a statement;

“It is wrong for anyone to exploit people’s fears at this time of high anxiety and we encourage people to report any issues like this to London Trading Standards.

“This particular issue is already under investigation by our teams. There are many scams relating to Covid-19 and the council will be working hard to support consumers to be on guard for bogus test kits, cures and treatments and other financial scams.”

Southwark New reported that the post has now been edited and the specific reference to the £91 kit protecting wearers from coronavirus was removed. The post now claims that the oil will protect members from “every plague.”

A disclaimer on the church's website now reads;

“This articles and its opinion on this website is solely under Bishop Climate Ministries and Not the Kingdom Church.”

Defending himself, Mr Wiseman who is also a trustee of the Kingdom Church charity told the PA news agency that he has sold 1,000 of the kits, but that the price tag was only to cover the cost of ingredients, packaging, and posting.

He added;

“What is so wrong about putting into practice what the Bible says."
