Nigeria is worse off than it was in 1993 - MKO Abiola’s son, Abdulmumuni

Abdulmumuni, son of the late Chief MKO Abiola, has spoken on the lack of progress in the country since 1993.

Speaking on the June 12 (Democracy Day) the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola’s son lamented that the education and health sectors had collapsed.

President Buhari on Monday signed into law the Public Holiday (Amendment) Bill, making June 12 a public holiday in the country. It also becomes the country’s official Democracy Day, replacing May 29, which hitherto was a public holiday.

The President took the decision to honour the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola. But Abdulmumuni said June 12 should be a day of national sober reflection for Nigerians as the “people are getting poorer and the poverty rate is increasing”.

Abdulmumuni, who was at the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja on Monday to receive an award on behalf of his late mother, who was inducted into the Nigerian Women Hall of Fame alongside 21 others, said;

“The recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day will get people thinking. I don’t think it should be a day of celebration. It should be a day of reflection of where we are as a country and where we are going. It is important that we should know that for the decisions we make today, there are consequences.

“This is because those who made the decisions to truncate the Nigerian people’s yearning for democracy in 1993 would now see that sometimes when you make certain decisions, you must see the consequences.

“The country is worse off than it was in 1993. My father was trying to address certain issues like poverty eradication and free education. But what is going on in the country now? The education system is dilapidated. The health care system is nothing. People are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. The poverty rate is increasing. I think the idea is that June 12 should be a day of reflection and I believe we can get out of this situation.”

Nigerians reacted to the gender options on Twitter and they are hilarious.

Romanian migrant arrives in UK on Friday & jailed for theft on Monday

A Romanian migrant who arrived in the UK on Friday was jailed three days later for shoplifting.

20-year-old Leonard-Valter Tudor went shoplifting in a branch of TK Maxx in Nottingham, just a day after he arrived in the country.

The Nottingham magistrates’ court heard that he took a foil-lined bag into the store thinking it would fool the security screens but was caught outside on June 8 while another man managed to flee.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said: "In interview, the defendant said he landed in the country the day before. He went to an address in Doncaster intending to find some work.

"He was approached by another Romanian man he doesn't know. There was the suggestion of employment in Nottingham of taking items from a shop and accepts he was opening bags and taking items.

"He had a foil lined bag and takes full responsibility for his action.”

According to the Nottingham Post, Tudor admitted theft of accessories worth £508 and having the foil-lined bag.

Judge Leo Pyle sentenced Tudor to 16 weeks in a young offenders’ institution and ordered him to pay a government surcharge of £115.

Judge Pyle said: "The sentence should be a deterrent in your particular case."

Defending Tudor, Neil O’Sullivan said Tudor had become a dad for the first time just a fortnight ago.

He said: "Simply the promise of money led him to commit these offences. As one can imagine, he had no income whatsoever as he only landed on Friday. He was detained straight away by security staff. All the items were recovered.

"This was an enterprise he entered into with some reluctance, it is fair to say. In some ways, it was borne out of necessity.”

Why we’re celebrating Democracy Day on June 12 - VP, Yemi Osinbajo explains

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday spoke on the importance of the June 12 Democracy Day.

He said the celebration of the day has attested to the President Muhammadu-led administration’s commitment to progressive ideals, “especially as it relates to the political history of the country”.

Prof Osinbajo gave the explanation when he received at the Presidential Villa, Venezuelan Vice President, Aristobulo Isturiz, who is leading his country’s delegation to Nigeria’s Democracy Day. Isturiz is among world leaders at the head of their countries’ delegation attending the maiden June 12 Democracy Day activities in Abuja.

Explaining Buhari administration’s beliefs in resolving some of the issues around the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Osinbajo added:

“One of the principal issues, politically, was the recognition of that election in 1993 which was won by, now late, Chief MKO Abiola, an important progressive opposition leader. That is why we are celebrating June 12 as our new Democracy Day. So, we are really very happy that you are able to share with us a very special event – the celebration of our new democracy day.”

On deepening ties between Nigeria and Venezuela, Prof. Osinbajo said: “We believe that the collaboration between our countries in the economy, culture and science, amongst others, will be useful to our people. We need to do a lot as there are many areas for potential cooperation including in agriculture, oil and gas and mining.”

New report claims Wendy Williams' mystery man is a 27-year-old convicted felon

New report claims Wendy Williams' mystery man is a much younger man who served time for robbery spree.

The talk show host who split from her estranged husband after a 25-year relationship, shared a photo where she was cuddling up to a mystery man. She hid his identity but there are fears she's dating Marc Tomblin after they were spotted together recently and her fans have gone on Twitter to express worries that she's leaving one bad relationship to enter another that has the potential to turn bad.

Marc Tomblin, who Wendy was recently seen with, was convicted of violent crimes. Last week, the paparazzi interviewed Williams in LA while a young man was beside her. And Wendy herself has alluded on social media that she’s seeing a man young enough to be her son.

BOSSIP has now reported that the young man Wendy was seen with in LA is the mystery man she shared on IG. According to the publication, the man is Marc Tomblin, a 27-year-old.

The publication went on to reveal that state records they obtained shows Tomblin got out of prison in 2014 after being convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon (conspiracy) and breaking and entering. He later served fifteen months for the two convictions, which ran concurrently, as well as probation.

Fans on Twitter have said they hope Wendy knows what she's doing and isn't just getting with him to get back at her estranged husband.
