Obono-Obla blames Osinbajo over ICPC probe, sues ICPC

Okoi Obono-Obla, the suspended Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property has blamed his run-in with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

In a lawsuit he filed to challenge the said probe for alleged certificate forgery and extortion on Tuesday August 20, the suspended SPIP chairman said the ICPC had no power to invite, arrest, detain, investigate, or prosecute him in connection with alleged falsification of academic certificates.

He also filed an ex parte application seeking an urgent hearing of the suit, while refusing to appear before the ICPC owing to his plan to challenge the summons by the commission. Punch reported that he alleged that part of the reasons he was suspended as the SPIP chairman, was that he was not taking instructions from Osinbajo.

Obono-Obla also said the anti-corruption agency would not conduct a fair probe of his case, due to the closeness of the commission’s Chairman, Prof Bolaji Owansanoye to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

He also linked his travails to the investigations he launched against influential persons and organisations, and also attached a detailed list of his achievements as the Chairman of the SPIP in terms of recovery of looted funds and assets. Obno-Obla also alleged that he received death threats and sacrificed his comfort in assisting the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to fight corruption.

“The directive also suggests that Mr President as the Minister of Petroleum Resources will also go through the Chief of Staff on policy matters. He has abdicated his responsibility and ceded it to his Chief of Staff.”

Ologbondiyan also said such demotion of ministers was unacceptable, counter-productive, adding that it only reduced governance to a domestic affair.

The President had on Tuesday, at the close of the two-days retreat organised for the ministers, asked them to always go through Kyari for meeting requests and through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, for issues relating to the Federal Executive Council.

“As I said yesterday (Tuesday), in terms of coordinating communication, kindly ensure that all submissions for my attention or meeting requests be channelled through the Chief of Staff while all Federal Executive Council matters be coordinated through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in order to speed up the process of decision-making.”

Military panel begins investigation into Wadume’s confession, invites police

The Joint Investigative Panel set up by the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, to probe the killing of three police in Ibi, Taraba State, has opened an investigation into the video showing arrested kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Wadume, indicting soldiers over his escape.

In the video released by police on their Twitter handle, Wadume said in Hausa, “My name is Hamisu Bala Wadume. Police came to arrest me. When they arrested me, the army (soldiers) chased them and opened fire. From there, they (soldiers) took me to their headquarters and cut off my handcuffs and released me. “I went back to my house, but the police came to re-arrest me.”

The DHQ also invited the police, air force, Department of State Services and other security agencies for a joint meeting to look into the “security challenges facing the country”.

A source in the DHQ panel said on Wednesday they were disturbed by Wadume’s confession in the video and were looking into it.

He said, “The arrest of Wadume by the police is commendable. It was a joint effort between the police and the military. The video confession is very disturbing and we cannot ignore it.

We are investigating the confession and we want to ensure a smooth relationship with the police. The panel was given one week initially but we now have an extension to tidy up the investigation. We are rounding off as soon as possible.”

The panel headed by Rear Admiral Ibikunle Olaiya has top officers drawn from the police, army, navy, air force, DSS and the Defence Intelligence Agency. On the invitation sent to the police and other security agencies, the acting Director, Defence Information, Col Onyema Nwachukwu, said;

“The special meeting is sequel to a decision reached at the meeting of the Chief of Defence Staff with service chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies.

“It is based on the need for their spokespersons and directors of information to hold regular meetings and address joint conferences to inform the public about the efforts the security agencies are making towards addressing the security challenges facing the country and other relevant issues.”
