Modern Family actor, Fred Willard dies at 86 from natural causes

American prolific actor and comedian, Fred Willard, known for his roles in movies including "Best in Show" and "This is Spinal Tap" and TV sitcoms "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Modern Family," has died at the age of 86.

Willard’s rep Glenn Schwartz confirmed his death to Rolling Stone, adding that the cause of death was natural causes.

Jamie Lee Curtis, wife of Willard’s longtime director Christopher Guest, first shared news of the actor’s death.

“How lucky that we all got to enjoy Fred Willard’s gifts,” Curtis tweeted. “He is with his missed Mary now. Thanks for the deep belly laughs Mr. Willard.” Willard’s wife of 40 years, Mary, died in 2018.

“A four-time Emmy nominee radiated a unique charm that established him as one of our generation’s most gifted comic actors,” Willard’s rep wrote in a tribute. “A master of sketch comedy, Fred was most heralded for his quick wit and improvisational expertise, which he demonstrated in hundreds of appearances on stage, on the big screen, and on a wide range of television shows.”

Willard’s daughter Hope Mulbarger said in a statement, “My father passed away very peacefully last night (Friday) at the fantastic age of 86 years old. He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever.”

Willard is also known for his work in Guest’s comedies — Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, For Your Consideration and A Mighty Wind — as well as scene-stealing moments in This Is Spinal Tap, Anchorman, Austin Powers and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

With hundreds of credits over an acting career that spanned over 50 years, he will appear posthumously in the upcoming Netflix satirical series Space Force.

His colleagues and friends have taken to their respective social media account to share their condolences.

PDP gives FG 48-hour to declare Chinese doctors’ whereabouts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given the Federal Government a 48-hour ultimatum to state the whereabouts of the Chinese medical team brought in purportedly to assist in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

In a statement released by its spokesperson Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP said its position is predicated on the alarming declaration by the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, that he cannot account for the whereabouts of the Chinese doctors who were brought into the country from the epicenter of the pandemic, despite repeated warnings and disapprovals by medical experts and professional bodies.

The party said the minister’s statement had heightened apprehensions in the public space that the ''APC-led Federal Government is being economical with the truth, with its officials playing politics with the lives of citizens and health safety of the nation.''

Part of the statement reads

The party described as suspicious, creepy and weird that the minister of health, who had repeatedly assured that the Chinese were brought to render medical services and trainings; and even went personally to receive them at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja on April 8, 2020; in an elaborately publicized event, can no longer account for the team.

The PDP recalls how officials of the APC-led administration had vehemently defended the invitation of the Chinese team and offered them full state protocol upon arrival, only to now turn around to disclaim the supposed experts, deny involvement with them and even forbid Nigerians from enquiring about their whereabouts.

Our party is worried that the APC-led Federal Government is being economical with the truth, with its officials playing politics with the lives of our citizens and health safety of our nation.

The PDP holds that government’s inability to account for the Chinese team amounts to direct betrayal of public trust, which has heightened fears of conspiracies by certain unpatriotic interests in the APC and its administration to compromise the health architecture of our nation and expose our citizens to danger.

Nigerians can recall how the Federal Government had failed to respond to demands by our party and other well-meaning Nigerians for the particulars of the members of the team, their medical status, scope of operation, detailed itinerary within our country as well as the safety of the equipment they brought into our nation.

Our party had expressed worry over scary reports of escalation of the scourge in certain countries reportedly after the arrival of Chinese medical personnel in those countries and insisted that the APC administration should be held responsible should there be any sudden upsurge in COVID-19 infection and deaths in our country, with the arrival of the said Chinese medical team.

We invite Nigerians to note that whereas our nation’s COVID-19 data, upon the arrival of the Chinese team in April, stood at 254 confirmed cases with 44 successfully treated by our doctors and 6 deaths, which reportedly had other underlining ailments.

Today, the data stands at no less than 5,450 cases and 171 deaths.

Our party therefore insists that the PTF on COVID-19 should immediately come out with the truth and provide explanations on the whereabouts of the team in the next 48 hours so as to douse the tension in the country.

The PDP however urged Nigerians to remain vigilant while intensifying personal and public health safety strategies at this critical time.

Two fake soldiers arrested over murder of Police Sergeant in Lagos (photos)

The Lagos state police command have arrested two deserted soldiers in connection with the murder of a police sergeant.

Bala Elkana, spokesperson of the state police command, says on May 16, detectives from Ilemba Hausa Police Station arrested one Kehinde Elijah “m” 45 years old of Ibiyeye Street, Whitehouse Bus Stop Okokomaiko.

Elijah is said to be among the three suspects on Police wanted list for violent crimes. Four pairs of military fatigues were recovered from his house. He claimed to have deserted the military in 2015 when he was deployed to the Northeast to fight insurgency. He has been in Ojo area since then, where he has been terrorizing members of the public.

The second suspect, Ezeh Frank Joseph was arrested in his apartment at Imude Pako Area, Era road, Ajangbadi on Sunday May 17. Joseph claimed to have deserted the military while undergoing basic military training.

Bala in his statement said both men were arrested over the shooting and killing of Police Sergeant, Onalaja Onajide, attached to Ilemba Hausa Division.

According to the statement, the shooting incident happened on May 10 at about 9.40pm when unknown gunmen fired gunshots at the Divisional Police Officer, Ilemba Hausa and the Station Guard, Sergeant Onalaja Onajide. The DPO survived the gunshots but the Station Guard died from the pellets wound.

Bala says the first suspect was earlier at the Station to solicit the release of his motorcycle which was impounded by the Police for violating the ban on the use of commercial Motorcycles. Not happy with the DPOs refusal to release the motorcycle to him, he decided to launch the deadly attack.

The police spokesperson says investigation is still ongoing while the suspects will soon be charged to Court.

5 arrested for beating peacemaker to death in Ogun

5 persons linked to the death of a 25-year-old man, Monsur Kareem, have been arrested by the Ogun state Police.

The suspects identified as Toheeb Popoola, Ibrahim Ridwan, Mutiu Tijani, Akeem Ishola and Lawal Afeez were arrested for reportedly beating Kareem to death.

Ogun state police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the suspects were arrested after the father of the deceased Najeem Kareem, filed a complaint at Sango Police Station.

Najeem said his son was beaten to death while trying to broker peace between a tricycle rider and Popoola following a heated argument they had.

Oyeyemi said in a statement;

“Preliminary investigation revealed that while a landlord in the area was coming in his tricycle loaded with kegs of water, he fell down with the kegs of water and while picking the kegs, Toheeb Popoola, whose house is situated in the place, came out to question him for staying there.

“This led to an argument between them and it was at that point that the deceased met them and tried to intervene.

“His intervention did not go down well with Toheeb, who invited the other four suspects to the scene, and ordered them to beat both the deceased and the tricycle rider.

“In the process, the deceased was rushed to hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

“The corpse of the deceased has been deposited in the Ifo General Hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.”

The state's Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.
