Coronavirus: Heartbreaking photos show woman showing off her engagement ring to her grandfather through the window of his nursing home because she can't go inside

Heartbreaking photos of a young woman being forced to show off her engagement ring to her elderly grandfather through his nursing home's window due to the coronavirus outbreak, are currently trending on the internet.

Boyd, 22, attends Southeastern Community College where she is studying to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Last weekend, Trevor Sellers, a contractor with the Department of Transportation, asked for her hand in marriage.

The woman, from North Carolina, didn’t let anything, not even the Coronavirus, get in the way of her sharing a special moment with her grandfather.

Boyd had to share the happy news with her grandfather through the window of his nursing home at the Premier Living and Rehab Center in Lake Waccamaw, due to restrictions over the coronavirus.

Such measures were put in place by the government to protect the elderly, who are the most vulnerable to the virus.

Carly was taken around to her grandfather's window where he could be seen resting on his bed.

At one point, she and her grandfather placed their hands opposite one another on either side of the window as they both shared the special moment.

'I really wanted to be able to tell my grandfather because he has dementia and there's no phone in there that he has access to,' said Carly said to KOLD. 'I just really wanted to make an effort to tell him.'

'The staff said 'Well we can walk around the building and we can pull the blinds up and you can tell him through the window' and I was like 'Yes, I would love to!'' she said.

The facility's administrator, Gennie Parnell, took pictures of the touching moment as Carly showed off her ring.

'I just … it was very --oh my gosh, I'm going to cry -- it was very special,' said Carly.

'I got really emotional and really sad and I just put my hand on the window, and he put his there too. I just told him I love him, and he said 'I love you too and I hope to see you soon', like really see you.'

Anne Giwa-Amu accuses Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie of plagiarizing her work; Chimamanda responds

Ms Anne Giwa-Amu, 60, who is the author of the book titled "Sade" accused Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie of Plagiarism and Chimamanda has now responded.

Giwa-Amu said Chimamanda's "Half of a Yellow Sun" was in fact plagiarised with bits of her work; "Sade: United we stand."

In a YouTube video, Anne accused Chimamanda of plagiarism then accused Chinua Achebe of playing a role in "giving" her work to Chimamanda who then rewrote it as Half of a Yellow Sun.

Giwa Amu explained how she published her work with the late Achebe. She had her work reviewed by Heinemann's African Writers Series, of which Achebe was the Editorial Adviser. Her writing agreement with them lasted till 2019.

Also, Chimamanda Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun was vetted by Achebe.

Giwa-Amu claims Chimamanda stole bits of her work with the help of Achebe. She went on to share documents to validate her claims.

She said she first discovered Chimamanda had copied her work "Sade" in 2013 when she saw a poster in London advertising the film Half of a Yellow Sun.

Giwa-Amu adds in the YouTube video: "As this was the original story of Sade, it provoked me to purchase a copy of Half of a Yellow Sun. On receiving the book, I found that the front cover of Half of a Yellow Sun was similar to Sade.

"They both had a profile picture of a young African woman with the colours of the Biafran flag, excluding green.

"On reading Half of a Yellow Sun, I discovered that it was a rewrite of Shade."

She continued: "In this video, I'll put forward evidence to show that after Heimannn Publishers published Shade in 1999, Chinua Achebe contacted Chimamanda Adichie who started to work on the infringing novel with the assistance of three editors."

She went on to share her "evidence" in the 12-minute video below.

She also released some documents on her website which she says supports her claims that Chimamanda stole her work (see here).

Her accusations led to arguments on Twitter as some supported her, saying they saw the similarities between both books, while some defended Chimamanda.

Chimamanda has now responded on Facebook.

In a statement written by Wylie Agency, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s literary agents. it was revealed that "Anne Giwa-Amu brought a legal claim against Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her publishers" in 2016. On February 15, 2019, Anne Giwa-Amu's legal claim was struck out by the court."

They denied the claims made by Giwa-Amu, adding that "her present allegations are false, libellous and constitute a harassment to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie". They said that "further legal actions are being taken."

The statement reads:

STATEMENT REGARDING FALSE CLAIMS FROM ANNE GIWA-AMU

We, the Wylie Agency, are Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s literary agents.

In 2016, Anne Giwa-Amu brought a legal claim against Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her publishers. Giwa-Amu alleged that Adichie’s novel HALF OF A YELLOW SUN had plagiarized her own novel. A professional independent reader was appointed to read both novels. The reader concluded that there was absolutely no basis for Giwa-Amu’s claim and advised that the claim should not be pursued. Giwa-Amu nevertheless continued with the claim.

On 15 February 2019, Anne Giwa-Amu’s claim brought against Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her publishers was struck out by the court. The court determined that her claim was ‘an abuse of the court’s process.’ The court ordered Giwa-Amu to pay Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her publishers the sum of £14,250, which Giwa-Amu failed to pay. The court also ordered Giwa-Amu to pay the legal costs Adichie incurred in defending her baseless claim. Till date, Giwa-Amu has not paid the money.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her publishers had never heard of Giwa-Amu’s novel until she brought her delusional claim. Her present allegations are false, libellous and constitute a harassment to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Further legal actions are being taken.

Below are Twitter reactions to Chimamanda's statement.

Nigeria is besieged by insurgents and bandits in the North and militants and highwaymen in the South - House of Reps Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila

Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has decried the spate of insecurity witnessed across the country.

In a statement by his spokesman Lanre Lasisi, the speaker who declared open a two-day capacity building workshop/retreat of the House Committee on Defence in collaboration with Centre for Strategic Research and Studies of the National Defence College and the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, stated that lawmakers are greatly concerned over insecurity in the country.

According to Femi Gbajabiamila, Nigeria is besieged on all sides and the current security challenges is more diverse and demanding than before.

He said;

“We’re besieged on all sides: in the north, by insurgents and bandits; in the south, by militants and highwaymen. And all of us together, our economy and industry, even our democracy, are threatened by the ambitions of those who will wage war on our interests through the skilful abuse of information technology and cyberspace.

“It is perhaps this last threat that promises to alter forever the nature of our existence. As legislators, we’re called upon to make national security policy through the passage of legislation, through oversight of national security infrastructure and through the approval of appropriation to fund national security activities."

Gbajabiamila also disclosed that they are on a new model of funding the military outside the national budget to enable it carry out its responsibilities.

He added;

“Here in Nigeria, we’re straight-jacketed with the military. The traditional role of the military as we understand it is, once there’s foreign and external aggression, that is when we deploy the military.

“But then, we get foreign aggression and external aggression can be simultaneous. So, when we begin to talk about the military and expand the frontiers. Rather than be straightjacket, we must consider and remember that in this day and age, this century, foreign attack can come from anywhere. We talk about cyberspace here.”
