Homeless man sues couple who raised $400k to help him

A homeless man who went viral last year after he gave a stranded woman his last $20, is now suing the woman and her husband after they raised money to help him.

Last year, Johnny Bobbitt gave his last $20 to Kate McClure when her car ran out of petrol. Kate shared the news online and Johnny went viral.

Subsequently, Kate and her husband, Mark D'Amico started an online fundraiser for him, which drew contributions from over 14,000 donors. The US couple raised more than $400,000 to help Bobbitt. But the homeless man is now accusing them of using the donations as their own "piggy bank".

On Tuesday, Bobbitt, 35, filed a lawsuit alleging fraud and conspiracy. Lawyers representing Bobbitt wrote in documents filed in Mount Holly, Philadelphia, that the couple had used the GoFundMe account they set up for Mr Bobbitt "to fund a lifestyle that they could not otherwise afford".

Mr D'Amico works as a carpenter and Ms McClure is a receptionist for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, according to local media.

In recent interviews, Mr Bobbitt said Ms McClure, 28, and Mr D'Amico, 39, had recently paid for trips to Las Vegas and Florida, and a new BMW. Bobbitt says the couple sold his camper, gambled away some of his money, and have declined to provide him with any financial records.

But, last week, Ms McClure told the Philadelphia Inquirer she felt frustrated and betrayed, and that she still wished to help Mr Bobbitt.

"I don't want to lose my job over this," she tearfully told the newspaper.

The couple claims he once blew $25,000 on drugs in just 13 days.

"Every dollar he ever touched was used for drugs," Mr D'Amico told NBC in a nationally televised interview on Monday.

A judge is set to hear the case on Thursday.

Nigerian Military hands over 23 rescued children to UNICEF through Borno State

The Nigerian military has handed over 23 children who were formerly associated with Boko Haram insurgents, to UNICEF through the Borno State government.

The children were picked up during various military operations around the north-east region. Aged between 17 and 10 years, the boys and girls confessed to the military that they have been assisting the Boko Haram insurgents either as fighters or domestic helps in the camps.

The Theatre Commander of a military counterinsurgency force, Abba Dikko, said the 23 children were released in line with Nigeria military’s commitment to the observance of human rights. He observed that the children and other vulnerable persons were victims who faced with the highly unstable circumstances induced by the conflict would have had little option but to fall under the thrall of the insurgents.

“We were able to identify this category of people, especially the women, the aged and children to whom it behooves our sense of duty and responsibility to ensure that they are removed from harm’s way and reconditioned and then passed on to those institutions that are responsible for their reintegration to normal ways of life.”

Having established a component of the Operation Lafiya Dole which monitors and ensures adherence to rights protection, Mr Dikko, a Major General, said “the Nigeria military will continue to abide by the global best practices in its effort to remove all children associated with armed conflicts in northeast Nigeria.

On that note the 23 children among whom were teenage girls that are pregnant, were handed over to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) through the Borno State government. The Head of the UNICEF field office in Borno State, Geoffrey Ijumba, said “the release of the 23 children was a demonstration of the military’s commitment towards the protection of people’s rights in conflict situation.”

Ijumba commended the military for its commitment to protecting the wellbeing of conflict affected children and said that UNICEF will work with the Borno State ministry of women affairs to provide the children with medical and psychosocial support before reuniting them with their families and integrating them in the larger society.

The children will be camped at the state rehabilitation centre where they will stay for a minimum of 12-weeks during which they will receive medical attention and full spectrum support to prepare them for their eventual reintegration. He said UNICEF has, since 2017, supported the social and economic reintegration of more than 8, 700 children previously associated with non-state actors in the northeast Nigeria by helping to trace their families, returning them to their communities and offering them psychosocial support and informal apprenticeship to help better their livelihoods.

In his words;

“I left Nigeria in 1963 to study abroad, but throughout my stay there, I was washing dead bodies to support myself to go to school. “Whenever I got home from work, I will be weeping, remembering the number of dead bodies I washed.

My boss at work then said I should not be afraid or fear, adding that such feeling is normal for first comers. He encouraged me to always see those dead bodies as iced fish. “But against all odds, I survived and that is why I am urging youths to see hard work as the only way to success.

I am saying this to challenge the youth of our next generation not to give up. “This is our chance as youths and as Yorubas to come together to chart a successful pathway for the country.” Ajimobi, however, urged Yoruba leaders and governors to unite for the progress of the Yoruba race.
