Cameroon loses $1.39m over Internet shutdown

An international human rights group monitoring the internet outage has revealed that businesses in Cameroon have lost over $1.39 million as the internet shutdown in the country enters the fourth week.
The government on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, ordered the suspension of internet services to the English speaking Northwest and Southwest Cameroon forcing lawyers’ and teachers’ into an indefinite strike.
In a letter to the Cameroon telecom firms, Access Now, an international non-profit and human rights group urged the firms to come together in helping to restore internet access following the outrageous loss.


'We write to urgently request your support in restoring internet access in the South West and North West regions of Cameroon. We ask that you publicly identify the steps you are taking to restore access to the internet in Cameroon,' the letter reads


Last week, UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression, David Kaye, said a network shutdown of this scale violated international law.


'It not only suppresses public debate but also deprives Cameroonians of access to essential services and basic resources.'


Mr. Kaye also urged the Cameroon government to restore internet facilities immediately.

Benue State Police have arrested one Misa Mohammed that has been parading himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Spokesman of the command, Moses Joel Yamu, said the suspect was arrested at No.33, off Egume Street in Wadata area of Makurdi after the command detailed its men on his trail following a tip off.
Yamu said the suspect, whose real name was Misa Iorliam Francis, appeared to have been defrauded by an illegal recruitment syndicate and cautioned people against dealing with questionable characters promising them jobs.

Speaking to newsmen, the suspect said a certain police officer, Uche Paul, who he met in 2013 when he registered for the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Plateau State had allegedly masterminded his recruitment into the police academy.

“The man (Paul) took me to the police station and assured that he would recruit me. He later printed an acceptance letter which he gave me as the commencement of my training. He recommended books which I bought and he urged me to read them as part of my training for the four years I stayed there.
“I went back to my people who donated N130,000 which I gave to Paul. I have been collecting things such as money and food items from my people for him during the period. And when he told me that I was going to pass out on February 3, 2017, I organised my people who went to thank him while I also did a thanksgiving in the church,” he said.The suspect, a native of Naka in Gwer local Government Area of Benue State, however admitted that he bought the uniform and gave it to an unsuspecting police tailor who sewed it for him.

Fayose condemns FG’s plan to ban Okada, Says; “I won’t ban Okada in Ekiti”

Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described plan by the federal government to ban commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Okada in the country as wicked, saying;

“In Ekiti State, we won’t ban Okada because it is a source of livelihood to a lot of families. Why would anyone even contemplate such when government did not creat alternative employments?”
He added;

“With this economic recession that is biting so hard, it is sheer heartlessness for the federal government to even think of sending Okada riders out of business instead of putting machineries in motion to check their excesses.”According to a statement issued on Sunday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose, who was addressing Okada riders that accosted him in Ikere Ekiti, on his way from Abuja on Saturday, said “ban on Okada will worsen the country’s security situation because it will remove foods from the table of so many people.”

The governor, who promised Okada riders in Ekiti State his continued support and assistance, said;

“The federal government has no power to ban Okada in my State and under my watch, no one will prevent Okada Riders from operating as long as they do not go against the laws.”Governor Fayose said;

“The hunger in the land is killing and most of these Okada riders are graduates who have taken to commercial motorcycling to survive because of unemployment. Many of them are even those who lost their jobs within the 21 months of this All Progressives Congress (APC) led federal government and government workers, whose salaries are not being paid regularly. How does the federal government expect them to feed if their means of livelihood is taken away?
“If commercial motorcyclist is a major cause of fatal road traffic accidents across the country, as posited by the federal government, should proposing their ban be an option? “Should we also say motor vehicles, especially heavy duty vehicles should be banned from plying our roads because they also cause accidents?
“Methinks the federal government should be concerned with the rate of unemployment in the country and the deplorable state of our roads, especially federal roads, instead of seeking to deprive Nigerians, who have taken to riding Okada to save themselves and their families from dying of hunger.

London police called in to arrest The Guardian newspaper reporter for wanting to interview President Buhari

Security men at the Abuja House in London where President Buhari is staying, yesterday called the police to arrest a correspondent of The Guardian newspaper who had arrived the premises, demanding to see President Buhari so he could interview him.

According to a report by the newspaper, after the reporter arrived the Abuja house which is the official residence of the Nigerian High commissioner to the UK in the afternoon, demanding to see the president, a member of staff at the premises told him that the President wasn't there.

According to the report, at about 2:50pm, a black Mercedes Benz SUV arrived the premises and the occupant sitting by the driver rolled down the glass and asked the The Guardian correspondent, “why are you here?”

“When I told him that l was a reporter with The Guardian and l had come to see if the president was there and to interview him, he looked quite irritated and replied angrily: ‘he’s not here, you can’t see anybody here’.

Shortly afterwards, two police officers, Constables Marlett and Stock, arrived on their motorcycles with the intent to arrest the reporter. They took the reporter’s name and date of birth and subsequently made a check on the national database, before staying around for about 20 minutes and then left.

The reporter was later directed to go to the Embassy- Nigerian House at Northumberland Avenue to see any official there for any information he is seeking to get. “Somebody should be there,” he was told.

According to the reporter, at about 1:20 p.m., a man and a teenage-looking girl presumably President Buhari's daughter, arrived the gate and they were granted access.

When asked:”Is that the daughter of the president?”, the security officer replied “I don’t know.” When The Guardian reporter pressed the gate buzzer about five minutes later, the security man sounded angry and threatened to call the police. “You should realise this is a private place and I will call the police,” the security officer said. When he was immediately corrected and told that the reporter was standing outside in a public place, he then said:” l won’t speak to you again.”

However around 1:40 p.m., when two guests arrived, the reporter shook hand with one of them and asked, “have you come to see Mr. President?” He replied cheerfully saying “yes”, but he didn’t enter the compound. He left about 15 minutes later.

Another security officer came out shortly after and told the reporter to move away from the main gate. “Excuse me, you can’t just stand here,” he said.

The reporter stated that he sighted Senate President Bukola Saraki, leave the Abuja residence yesterday. Recall that President Buhari on his twitter handle, posted that he had a meeting with Saraki at the Abuja house yesterday.
