New Zealand’s speaker, Trevor Mallard goes viral with adorable photos of him feeding colleague’s baby during plenary

Photos of New Zealand’s parliamentary speaker cradling a colleague’s baby as he presided over a debate has gone viral on social media.

Trevor Mallard, speaker in the country’s House of Representatives, shared photos of him feeding MP Tamati Coffey’s newborn son while in the speaker’s chair.

He captioned it: “Normally the Speaker’s chair is only used by Presiding Officers but today a VIP took the chair with me. Congratulations tamaticoffey and Tim on the newest member of your family.”

The pictures have since been shared and liked thousands of times, with many hailing Mallard for taking on the babysitting duties.

Coffey’s son was born via a surrogate to him and his partner Tim Smith in July.

New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern made history last year by becoming the first female world leader to bring her baby to the United Nations general assembly. And in the UK, Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson brought along her baby as she sat on Parliament’s famous green benches in January – in what was thought to be a first during a Commons debate.

Buhari has reduced ministers to Abba Kyari’s clerical aides and Its completely unacceptable - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has accused President Buhari of reducing ministers to his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari’s clerical aides with the directive that they (ministers) must channel all their meeting requests to him through Kyari.

PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement said it was an indication that Nigerians would not enjoy good governance during Buhari’s second term.

“The directive also suggests that Mr President as the Minister of Petroleum Resources will also go through the Chief of Staff on policy matters. He has abdicated his responsibility and ceded it to his Chief of Staff.”

Ologbondiyan also said such demotion of ministers was unacceptable, counter-productive, adding that it only reduced governance to a domestic affair.

The President had on Tuesday, at the close of the two-days retreat organised for the ministers, asked them to always go through Kyari for meeting requests and through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, for issues relating to the Federal Executive Council.

“As I said yesterday (Tuesday), in terms of coordinating communication, kindly ensure that all submissions for my attention or meeting requests be channelled through the Chief of Staff while all Federal Executive Council matters be coordinated through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in order to speed up the process of decision-making.”

Military panel begins investigation into Wadume’s confession, invites police

The Joint Investigative Panel set up by the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, to probe the killing of three police in Ibi, Taraba State, has opened an investigation into the video showing arrested kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Wadume, indicting soldiers over his escape.

In the video released by police on their Twitter handle, Wadume said in Hausa, “My name is Hamisu Bala Wadume. Police came to arrest me. When they arrested me, the army (soldiers) chased them and opened fire. From there, they (soldiers) took me to their headquarters and cut off my handcuffs and released me. “I went back to my house, but the police came to re-arrest me.”

The DHQ also invited the police, air force, Department of State Services and other security agencies for a joint meeting to look into the “security challenges facing the country”.

A source in the DHQ panel said on Wednesday they were disturbed by Wadume’s confession in the video and were looking into it.

He said, “The arrest of Wadume by the police is commendable. It was a joint effort between the police and the military. The video confession is very disturbing and we cannot ignore it.

We are investigating the confession and we want to ensure a smooth relationship with the police. The panel was given one week initially but we now have an extension to tidy up the investigation. We are rounding off as soon as possible.”

The panel headed by Rear Admiral Ibikunle Olaiya has top officers drawn from the police, army, navy, air force, DSS and the Defence Intelligence Agency. On the invitation sent to the police and other security agencies, the acting Director, Defence Information, Col Onyema Nwachukwu, said;

“The special meeting is sequel to a decision reached at the meeting of the Chief of Defence Staff with service chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies.

“It is based on the need for their spokespersons and directors of information to hold regular meetings and address joint conferences to inform the public about the efforts the security agencies are making towards addressing the security challenges facing the country and other relevant issues.”
