Police launch manhunt for kidnappers of Cross Rivers State NLC Chairman, Ben Ukpepi

The Cross River Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abductors of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in Cross River, Ben Ukpepi.



Ukpepi was abducted on Tuesday at his residence in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state by unknown gunmen. The State Police Spokesperson, DSP Irene Ugbo said efforts were on to rescue the chairman unhurt.



She said the Anti-Kidnapping and Cultism Unit of the police was working tirelessly with a view to rescue Ukpepi.


“Since we received the report of his kidnap, we have deployed our special unit on kidnapping to handle the matter and I can assure you that the NLC chairman will be released.” She pledged.

Alfred Mboto, Permanent Secretary on Security, Governor’s office, Calabar, said the state government was working with security agencies to secure the release of Ukpepi from his abductors.



Mboto gave the assurance that with commitment of the state government in safe guarding lives and properties of residents, the NLC chairman would be rescued unhurt.

Actress Jane Fonda arrested 24-hours before her 82nd birthday

Oscar-winning actress, Jane Fonda who turns 82 today was arrested for a fifth time in Washington, D.C. on Friday, December 20th as part of her ongoing climate change march.



Prior to Fonda’s arrest, she gave a speech in front of a sign that read, ‘Happy 82nd birthday, Jane!’ Fonda has been protesting weekly during her Fire Drill Fridays since announcing she was moving to Washington “to be closer to the epicentre of the fight for our climate.”







Her participation has ended in multiple arrests. She was arrested alongside several other protesters Friday. Of the 138 arrested, two were kept overnight.



The group sang ‘Happy birthday’ to Fonda as she was led away in handcuffs. Friday’s march was another celebrity-studded affair. Rosanna Arquette, Gloria Steinem and Casey Willson were arrested at the protest, too.



She was released on Friday night, according to her rep, Ira Arlook.

14 civilians killed, 13 others missing as Boko Haram terrorists attack Chad

Boko Haram militants killed 14 Chadian civilians and wounded five others in an overnight attack on a fishermens’ camp in the northeastern part of Lake Chad.



According to reports, the latest attack struck a camp of fishermen near the village of Kaiga on Lake Chad, which has been plagued by the militants since 2009.

“The assailants arrived in the night and attacked the fishermen,” official Dimoya Souapebe said. Thirteen people are missing in addition to the 14 killed, he added.



In March, Boko Haram militants killed at least 23 Chadian soldiers in an overnight raid, one of the deadliest of such attacks inside Chad by the insurgents. Chadian soldiers are part of a U.S.-trained West African task force deployed to counter Boko Haram.



The violence over the past decade has killed more than 30,000 people and forced about 2 million to leave their homes.

Boko Haram has been fighting for a decade to carve out an Islamist caliphate in northeast Nigeria and has carried out regular raids over loosely guarded borders into neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Nigerian footballer, Mandela Egbo loses his father

Nigerian-born British footballer, Mandela Egbo has lost his father Uchenna Egbo to the cold hands of death.







The 22-year-old footballer who plays for SV Darmstadt 98, lost his father on December 3. Uchenna Egbo died at the age of 61 and will be buried at Umucha Amuda, Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State on January 25.
