Heavy flood might hit FCT, Bayelsa, Rivers, others from Sept 6 – NIHSA

 

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has predicted that heavy flood might hit the Federal Capital Territory, Rivers state, Bayelsa, and others beginning from September 6.

 

Disclosing this to newsmen on Tuesday, August 25, the  Director-General of NIHSA, Clement Nze, said the Middle Niger of the River Niger Basin is currently flooded and the magnitude of flood from that area is expected to arrive in Nigeria through Kebbi State from September 6, 2020.

 

He said parts of 275 local government areas in the 36 states of the federation, including Abuja, were within the moderately probable flood risk areas, while the remaining 397 local government areas were within the low probable flood risks areas.

 

Nze said at least 102 local government areas in 28 states fall within the highly probable flood risk areas. He added that River Niger Basin covered nine countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria which is at the lowest portion of the basin.

 

 “The red alert points to imminent river flooding in Nigeria. Both the Kainji and Jebba dams have commenced spilling water downstream.

This means that once the upper catchment of the basin gets flooded, Nigeria should be prepared to experience flooding incidents.

As of today, the Middle Niger of the Niger Basin made up of Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso and part of Mali, have been flooded. The flood levels at the hydrological stations monitored in Niamey and Malanville (Benin Republic) have got to the red alert zone.

Latest information received by the NIHSA from the regional Niger Basin Authority headquarters in Niamey had it that as of Sunday, August 23, 2020, the flood level of the River Niger monitored in Niamey was 6.60 metres.”

 
He said with this development, these state namely: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Rivers, and Bayelsa, might experience heavy flooding from around September 6, 2020

Kanye West fails to make November ballot in Missouri

 

Kanye West has failed in his effort to appear on the Missouri ballot in the November election.

 

The rapper, 43, fell short in his bid by about 3,500 signatures, with only 6,557 submitted.

 

In Missouri, independent presidential candidates must submit a petition with 10,000 signatures from registered voters to be placed on the ballot ahead of the November election.

 

The Missouri Secretary of State’s Office said Tuesday it had “issued a letter to Kanye West informing him of the insufficiency of his independent candidate nomination petition for President.”

West who launched his bid back in July has also missed the deadline to qualify in several states. But in Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah, and Vermont, he will be listed as a presidential candidate on the ballots. 

Hong Kong reports 'first case' of Coronavirus reinfection

 

A 33-year-old man living in Hong Kong has been reinfected with Covid-19 for the second time this year, according to preliminary research.

 

He is the "first case" documented of getting coronavirus twice.

 

He had symptoms the first time, but no obvious symptoms the second time, the team at the University of Hong Kong reported Monday.

 

The pre-print study - which the University of Hong Kong said has been accepted for publication in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases - found that the man's second case of Covid-19 occurred 142 days after the first.

 

During his first episode of illness, the patient had a cough, sore throat, fever and headache for three days, according to the study. He tested positive for Covid-19 on March 26.

 

Then during his second episode, the patient was returning to Hong Kong from traveling in Spain via the United Kingdom, and he tested positive during his entry screening at the Hong Kong airport on August 15, the researchers said. The man was hospitalized again but remained asymptomatic, CNN reports.

 

"The patient got re-infected 4.5 months after the first infection. Therefore, it shows that for this patient, the immunity induced by the first infection is short lasting," Dr. Kelvin Kai-Wang To of the University of Hong Kong, who worked on the study, said in an email to CNN.

 

For the study, researchers at the university and various hospitals in Hong Kong analyzed specimens collected from the patient 10 days after his symptoms emerged in the first episode and then one day after hospitalization for the second episode.

 

Genetic analysis suggested that the first infection was from a strain of the coronavirus most closely related to strains from the United States or England, and the second infection was most closely related to strains from Switzerland and England.

 

"This case illustrates that re-infection can occur even just after a few months of recovery from the first infection. Our findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may persist in humans, as is the case for other common-cold associated human coronaviruses, even if patients have acquired immunity via natural infection or via vaccination," the researchers wrote.

 

The findings also show that people who have had coronavirus already should nonetheless get vaccinated if and when a vaccine becomes available, the researchers wrote.

 

"Patients with previous COVID-19 infection should also comply with epidemiological control measures such as universal masking and social distancing," they wrote.

"We do a disservice to the future when we groom kids for suffering" Columnist Ademola Adigun says, prompting a debate

 

A writer has started a debate on Facebook after he said grooming kids for suffering is a disservice to the future.

 

Ademola H. Adigun wrote about a couple who have opposing views on raising their kids. Though they are wealthy, the husband is bent on teaching kids to live life the hard way and do things manually, like washing their clothes with their hands, while the wife is the opposite.

 

Giving his opinion, Ademola said teaching kids to adapt to suffering is a disservice.

 

He wrote:

 

A couple were arguing on the kids learning to wash manually or use the washing machine. The father was old school. The “I suffered to make it” type. “Let children learn that life has turns”

The wife was “we suffered so our kids will not suffer” type. She felt there was no point of “unnecessary hardship”

Me the arbitrator... no views. Whatever works for parents.

But I told them... we do a disservice to the future when we groom kids for suffering.

Adaptation to wealth and comfort is the more difficult one. Poverty is easy to adapt to.

Why suffer a Nigerian child that is already suffering by being born a Nigerian?

 

 

His post started an argument as some people opined that it's best to teach kids to live the hard way since the wealth may not always be available, while others said teaching kids to adapt to suffering gives them a poverty mentality and prevents them from using their time wisely.

 

As the argument intensified, Adigun narrated an event that occurred when he was in Europe and needed to have his clothes laundered.

 

 

After his narration, some of his followers kept insisting that children must be taught to hand-wash clothes, so Adigun sarcastically advised them to also teach their children to use grinding stones to grind pepper since they prefer the harder life.

 

He wrote: "Teach them how to grind pepper with hands on stone while you are at it. Teach them to use wood to cook. Teach them to use lanterns. Sebi, we are teaching survival skills for the dark ages. Egusi tito and beans picking self!"
