Nigeria's U23 Olympic team arrive back in Nigeria

Twelve players who represented Nigeria in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 7 officials who accompanied them, including coach Samson Siasia, have arrived back in Nigeria while others returned to their various bases. The Dream Team won the only medal (Bronze) for Nigeria at the Olympics following their 3-2 victory over Honduras in the third-placed match.

Interestingly, they arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Monday night without any official from the Sports Ministry or the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) welcoming them from Brazil and have now departed to their various destinations as no plans were made to host them.

French police force Muslim woman to remove her Burkini on Nice beach (photos)

Police officers armed with pepper spray and batons marched onto Cannes beach, Nice, France on Tuesday and ordered a Muslim woman wearing a burkini to strip off, and after she did so, wrote down a fine for her.

Images of the confrontation on Tuesday show at least four police officers standing over the woman who was resting on the shore at the town’s Promenade des Anglais, the scene of last month’s Bastille Day lorry attack.

This comes after some French cities including Nice implemented bans on women wearing Burkinis, a garment worn by Muslim women that covers the body and hair, mostly used when at the beach.

According to the AFP, another young Muslim mother was ordered off the beach at Cannes and fined for simply wearing a headscarf.

Three armed officers pointed a pepper spray canister in the 34-year-old's face and told her she was in breach of a new rule outlawing swimming costumes that cover the entire body.
According to the woman, the 'racist' officers simply wanted to humiliate her in front of her children and other family members, even though she was not even wearing a burkini.
“I was sitting on a beach with my family,” said the 34-year-old who gave only her first name, Siam. I was wearing a classic headscarf. I had no intention of swimming.”
'I wasn't even planning to swim, just to dip my feet,' said Siam, who was wearing leggings, a top, and a headscarf.

When asked why she was dressed 'inappropriately', Sian replied:
'I didn't know exactly what was going on, I hadn't really followed the controversy'.
Sian at first refused to undress or to leave the beach, saying: 'My children were crying as they witnessed by humiliation'.

Siam accepted an on-the-spot fine of around 9 pounds, and her details were recorded on what will amount to a criminal record. She said:
'Today we are not allowed on the beach. Tomorrow, the street? Tomorrow, we'll be forbidden from practicing our religion at all?
'I'm in the country of human rights. I see no trace of the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. I am outraged that this could happen in France.'

Last week, Nice became the latest French resort to ban the burkini. Using language similar to the bans imposed earlier at other locations, the city banned clothing that “overtly manifests adherence to a religion at a time when France and places of worship are the target of terrorist attacks”.

ROME — At least 21 people were killed and dozens more were missing or feared dead Wednesday after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake and a series of aftershocks struck several towns in central Italy, according to local news reports.

The death toll climbed in the morning as rescuers searched for people trapped in the rubble. The hardest-hit towns were Amatrice and Accumoli nearRieti, about 80 miles northeast of Rome.

Police near the town of Ascoli said they could hear cries for help from under the rubble but lack the heavy equipment to move the rocks, according the RAI radio.

“Half of the town doesn’t exist anymore,” Sergio Perozzi, mayor of Amatrice, told RAI-TV. “People are stuck underneath the rubble. Houses are no longer there.”

Several buildings collapsed and lights went out after the earthquake, Perozzi said. He said he had trouble communicating with emergency responders and couldn't reach the hospital. The center of Amatrcie was devastated and homes collapsed on residents as they slept.

“The whole ceiling fell but did not hit me,” resident Maria Gianni told the Associated Press. “I just manag

Rescuers clear debris while searching for victims in

The picturesque medieval town of about 3,000 residents — best known as the home of “pasta all’amatriciana” — is remote and was cut off after a bridge connecting the town and the rest of the region was damaged in the quake.

Search parties sifted through the rubble in various towns and villages as the sun rose. It became clear for some officials that the extent of the damage was worse than they initially thought.

"Now that daylight has come, we see that the situation is even more dreadful than we feared with buildings collapsed, people trapped under the rubble and no sound of life," Pertucci, Accumoli mayor, told RAI-TV.

Fabrizio Curcio, the director of Italy’s civil protection agency, activated national emergency procedures. He said the quake was on par with one in L'Aquilla in 2009 that left more than 300 people dead.

The first earthquake struck around 3:30 a.m. local time near Norcia, a small town roughly 105 miles from Rome, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No victims were reported there, but the quakes damaged buildings, according to RaiNews24.

“Much of our patrimony is damaged, but there are no victims,” Mayor Nicola Alemanno told RaiNews24. “That is the good news.”
