Obanikoro reportedly refunds N100.4m to EFCC, may regain freedom
Embattled former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has reportedly refunded N100.4 million out of the N785 million a company, Sylvan McNamara limited linked to him, received from the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
The Nation reports that Obanikoro who has been in EFCC custody since October 19th, may be released after the N100.4 million he refunded has been confirmed by the antigraft agency.
An EFCC operative who spoke on condition of anonymity said “After many days of foot-dragging, the ex-Minister has paid back N100.4million out of about N785million allegedly collected from the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) by Sylvan McNamara Limited, a company which was allegedly linked to him. I think we may grant him bail to give him time to look for the balance of the cash. We are trying to verify the government account he paid into and we want to confirm the payment. We may release him any moment from now after the confirmation. This, however, does not mean that we are dropping any charges against him. Our objective is first of all to recover the illegal funds. The decision on his trial will depend on the review of his case and the extent to which he is liable. You know the ex-Minister has admitted flying over N1.299billion to Akure in two shuttles for Governor Ayodele Fayose. The cash was collected by Fayose’s associate, Abiodun Agbele, who is currently on trial. Obanikoro also confessed that he personally gave $5.377m (N60m then) cash to Fayose. He admitted on oath that he was used to siphon public funds meant for arms purchase. These are all criminal offences which are punishable by the nation’s laws. The testimonies of Obanikoro will hasten his trial and ongoing prosecution of all the suspects implicated in the arms cash.”
Obanikoro in his statement to the EFCC, had alleged that N3.880 billion out of the N4.75 billion he collected from Dasuki, was handed to Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, to rig the state governorship election in June 2014 in favor of PDP. Obanikoro also alleged that he handed over $5.377m (N60m then) cash to Fayose at Spotless Hotel, Ado-Ekiti in the presence of the former Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Dr. Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts. Fayose has since dismissed this allegation, accusing the Federal government of wanting to rope him into the case by all means possible since he is always very critical of the Buhari-led adminisitration.
Commenting on Fayose's denial, the EFCC source said “The governor is just grandstanding because of the immunity he enjoys. He personally admitted collecting money from Zenith Bank as a campaign gift. His associate, Agbele, reeled out how houses were bought from the N1.299billion brought by Obanikoro. And the ex-Minister has finally nailed him with his statement on oath. Fayose has a date with the court. It is just a matter of time. In two years, he will be in the dock to account for the contracts he executed in the ONSA to have earned such slush funds".

Buhari will on Tuesday November 1st visit the region where he is scheduled to meet with stakeholders and leaders from the region. His visit is prelude to the launch of a $10 billion infrastructure rebirth investment programme for the region.Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, who revealed President Buhari's scheduled visit to the region, said
"On Tuesday, President Buhari in his Kind nature will have a meeting with the Niger Delta stakeholders. About 50 of them are going to be coming to that meeting. and it comprises all the kings drawn from all the oil producing states"he said

A mother and daughter that are competing in Brazil's Miss Bumbum competition have disclosed how their obsession to win the coveted prize led to the mother's spouse of six years walking out on them.The 35-year-old Bruna Ferraz, and her daughter Eduarda Morais, 19, both admitted they are desperate to be crowned the country's queen of shapely bottoms.

97 migrants, mostly African nationals including three women and a child, are believed to have perished on Wednesday, October 26th, when a rickety inflatable boat carrying them fell apart in the Mediterranean Sea and capsized off the coast of Libya.The migrants left Tajoura, in western Libya, before dawn on Wednesday morning. A patrol of the Coast Guard received an SOS call from Libyan oil tanker Anwaar Al-Khaleej warning about an imminent drowning of an illegal immigrants' boat.
The spokesman for the navy, Ayoub Gassim said the boat tore and began filling with water about 42 kilometres (26 miles) off Libyan coast. The Libyan coast guard rescued 29 survivor out of the 129 in the boat."The staff onboard the tanker managed to save 29 immigrants while the remaining 97 ones, including 3 women and a child, drowned."

N1.4bn Arms scam: EFCC presents 13 more Exhibits against ex Chief of Defence staff, Alex Badeh
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Thursday, October 27th, 2016 admitted another thirteen exhibits tendered before it by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the ongoing trial of a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh (rtd).Badeh is being prosecuted by the EFCC alongside his company, Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, for allegedly abusing his office by using the dollar equivalent of the sum of N1.4billion (One Billion, Four Hundred Million Naira) removed from the accounts of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, to purchase properties in choice areas of Abuja between January and December, 2013.
The offence contravenes Section 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.
Counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, led the seventh prosecution witness, PW7, Oluwatoyin Oke (a business woman); from whom the first defendant (Badeh) allegedly bought a choice property in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja in evidence.
The witness told the court that she used to own and live in No. 19, Kumasi Crescent, Wuse 2 Abuja also known as plot 456 Kumasi Crescent Wuse 2, until 2013 when she sold it for N260million. Oke stated that after putting the property up for sale, she was contacted by one Abba Maidama who informed her of an interested buyer. Upon inspection of the property, Maidama further informed her that his client was ready to commence payment in three installments.
The PW7 told the Court that the first installment she received was $550,000.00 (five hundred and fifty thousand United States dollars) which was paid into her account by the agent. Upon receipt of the second and third installments of the dollar equivalent of N260million, Oke stated that she signed and handed over all the original documents and title deeds of the property, including a Power of attorney, Deed of Assignment and Deed of Sale to Maidama.
Prosecuting counsel now asked the witness to ascertain copies of the documents which were shown to her in court; and she did. Thereafter, the documents were tendered and marked as exhibits D8 to D20 with no objection from lead defense counsel, Akin Olujimi, SAN. Olujimi was called upon to cross-examine the witness to which he declined.
Justice Okon Abang, thereafter, adjourned to the November 2 and 3, 2016 for continuation of trial.
