PDP wants the Appeal Court president to quit presidential poll tribunal, says she’s the wife of an APC senator-elect

The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday asked the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, to withdraw as a member of the five-man panel of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

In a petition received in the Court of Appeal’s President’s office in Abuja, on Thursday, the party alleged that as the chairman of the five-man panel, Bulkachuwa would likely be biased in the handling of the tribunal’s proceedings because of her ties to family members belonging to the All Progressives Congress.

The party, in the petition which was signed by its National Chairman, Uche Secondus, and its National Secretary, Umaru Tsauri, specifically said Bulkachuwa’s husband, Adamu Bulkachuwa, contested and won the Bauchi North Senatorial District election on the platform of the APC during the February 23, 2019 poll.

“We are reasoning that, armed with this golden rule of justice and fair hearing and given your direct intimacy, through your dear husband, with the APC, one of the parties in this election petition, Your Lordship, would have exercised your constitutional right and powers guardedly, judiciously and judicially, by excluding yourself from the panel of this honourable court’s sitting over this particular petition,” the party stated.

The party also complained that Bulkachuwa could have, by a comment she made during the inaugural sitting of the tribunal on Wednesday, prejudged its petition challenging the outcome of the February 23, 2019 presidential election. It stated that Bulkachuwa’s claim in her speech to the effect that there would always be complaints no matter how an election was well-conducted, had “rocked” its confidence in the panel led by her.

It stated, “Furthermore, My Lord, in your address at the opening of the pre-hearing, you made some remarks that were both frightening and heartwarming. For instance, in your opening paragraph you said: ‘Elections are held in Nigeria every four years into elective positions. No matter how well the election is conducted, there are bound to be complaints…’

“This remark rocked our confidence in a panel led by Your Lordship to determine our fate in an election which could be one of the ones that were very well ‘conducted’ in Your Lordship’s opinion.

“The question then is how can a petitioner convince Your Lordship otherwise over an election, which in Your Lordship’s opinion, was very well ‘conducted’?”

The PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had jointly filed their petition before the tribunal to challenge the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the APC, at the presidential poll which held on February 23, 2019.

The party’s petition is one of the four filed at the tribunal to challenge Buhari and APC’s victory at the poll. The PDP said due to the intimacy Bulkachuwa had with APC through her husband and other family members, it was not expecting her to be part of the tribunal panel not to talk of her chairing it.

Meghan Markle's son Archie was 'named after her pet cat and cartoon she loved'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their son's name to the world on Wednesday and, since then, people have wondered why the name Archie was chosen for the royal baby.

A former friend of the Duchess of Sussex has now shed light on two possible reasons for why Meghan chose the name.

The former friend reportedly said Meghan used to have a cat called Archie and she believes she may have named her son after the dead cat. Meghan previously shared a video of herself with the cat.

The former friend told The Sun: "Doria [Meghan's mum] rescued Archie and he became an important part of the household. Meghan loved playing with him and she was always talking about him to her friends. It’s no surprise she named her new baby Archie. She loved that cat."

The friend also suggested the royal baby could have been named after the main character of the American comic book Archie. Meghan reportedly obsessed with the cartoon character as a child and used to visit comic stores with her now-estranged father Thomas.

The former friend is quoted as saying: "This could be a little nod to her dad. It was him who instilled that hobby into her, that was their activity together. He would drive her around and also surprise her with vintage volumes. She had at least 100. This may be a way to reach out to her dad, even after all that’s happened."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed that their son's full name is Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Harrison means "Henry's son" which makes sense because Harry's birth name is Henry. Mountbatten-Windsor, according to Wikipedia, is the personal surname used by some of the male-line descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

'Let them investigate us and if we have stolen, they should arrest us' - Governor Ajimobi

Out-going Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi has asked the authorities to arrest him if they find him wanting of misappropriation at the expiration of his tenure in 18 days.

Ajimobi made the comments on Thursday at a public lecture and fellowship investiture organised by Society for Peace Studies and Practice at the Subomi Balogun Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

He said: “We will work till the last day of this administration. We don’t care about what some people are saying all about… As I am talking to you today, this administration still has 18 days and some hours to expire. “When they get there, let them cancel all the contracts we have signed. Let them investigate us and if we have stolen, they should arrest us.”

“We have given our best to the state and we will continue to do this. The feats recorded by our administration placed Oyo as one of the five safest havens of investment in the country.

“We are also the fourth investment-friendly state in Nigeria according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics; with a four-star rating for investment friendliness by the Nigerian Export Promotions Commission.”

In March, Seyi Makinde, the incoming governor, accused Ajimobi of awarding N30 billion worth of contracts in a single day. He vowed to review all the contracts signed by the outgoing governor when he takes over.
