A Coronavirus-stricken mother has given birth to a baby boy on her death bed while attached to a ventilator in St Petersburg, Russia.

Svetlana Sorochinskaya, 36, is believed to have caught coronavirus during a visit to see her father Kirey Pinchin, 64, in the hospital where he had undergone heart surgery. He later died from Covid-19 on 5 November, eight days after he was discharged from the hospital.

Her mother, Vera, who had also become seriously ill was told to go to hospital but when she arrived on 2 November, there were no available beds, said Svetlana's cousin, Larisa Kachkaeva.

'She was told: 'Lie on the floor in the corridor',' after a scan had shown 60 percent damage to her lungs.

Vera, 62, died on 12 November.

When Svetlana caught the virus, she said medics gave her 'some cough powder, and that's it's to fight the virus.

The report said she had initially gone to a maternity hospital to give birth but when her Covid-19 was confirmed, she was sent to an infectious diseases hospital.

Three days later Svetlana, a dental clinic administrator, gave birth six weeks prematurely to her son, who she had decided to name Kirey, after her late father.

Hours after giving birth, she died.

The three deaths have reportedly triggered a custody battle over baby Kirey, who is the sole survivor of the family.

Svetlana, who was divorced before her death had refused to name the father of her long-awaited child.

The baby, being cared for in hospital - is now the sole heir to valuable property in St Petersburg, including two apartments.

A man identified only as M has claimed he is the boy's father and will undergo a DNA test.

Svetlana's cousin, Larisa Kachkaeva has also offered to adopt and raise the child, and claims that before she died Svetlana had denied that M was the father, saying only that he was a colleague.

She told Fontanka news outlet: 'Svetlana had said that he was not the father of the child.

'We await the result of the DNA analysis and the court will decide.'

House of Representatives to summon President Buhari over security situation in the country

House of Representatives to summon President Buhari over security situation in the country

Worried by the heightened level of insecurity in the country, the House of Representatives today December 1, passed a resolution to invite President Buhari to brief the house on the true state of the security situation in the country.

The decision was taken during today's plenary when the House considered a motion moved by members from Borno State on the recent massacre of 43 rice farmers in the state by Boko Haram insurgents.

The debate had earlier turned rowdy after the Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila appealed that it would be inappropriate to invite the president to disclose the actions being taken towards handling the security situation in the country. The Speaker described it as counter-productive.

Some members of the House were opposed to the speaker’s position and this turned into a rowdy debate.

The lawmakers then went into an executive session to resolve the matter.

After the executive session which was held closed doors, the House resumed and Representative Ahmed Jaha who is one of the sponsors moved an amendment to invite the President to brief the house on the security situation in the country.

His amendment was seconded and unanimously adopted.

No date was however announced for the invitation.

Former Governors are not in senate to sleep - Senator T.A Orji

Former Governors are not in senate to sleep - Senator T.A Orji

Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia Central, Theodore Orji has countered claim of former Governors not being productive in the national assembly.

Speaking while inspecting one of his constituency projects at Okwuta Primary School, Isieke Ibeku, the senator stated that a combination of all their outputs will reveal what they have generated in the senate.

Orji said;

 “You see, all this hate speech – people saying that former governors are there sleeping. Are we sleeping and producing those bills? They say former governors go there to relax, they are sleeping, and that they are not doing anything. But you see the output of one person and all of us. Combine them and you will know the total output that we have generated in the senate.”

On the recent defection of the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, Orji added;

“I am not worried at all. Every person has his own objective. He knows why he has gone.

“Will I go and pull him back? No. we are individuals and he has his reasons for leaving which he has told the people. It is either you take it or you leave it. You cannot take a rope and tie him and say, stay there. He is free to move. This is a mobile world.”
