Legendary Angola rebel chief, Jonas Savimbi gets public burial 17 years after death (Photo)

Thousands of supporters of Angola’s former rebel leader Jonas Savimbi rallied for his public reburial today, 17 years after he was killed by troops in a shootout that marked the end of the country’s devastating civil war.

Wearing T-shirts printed with an image of Savimbi’s face, supporters placed his coffin on a hexagonal monument designed by one of the guerrilla leader’s sons in Savimbi’s native village of Lopitanga. It was then buried in accordance with his wishes.

The ceremony was touted as a symbol of national reconciliation after decades of war. Savimbi, known as the “black rooster”, died in February 2002 during a clash with the army in central Angola. Soldiers buried him there and his public funeral and reburial came after long negotiations between Angolan authorities and Savimbi’s UNITA, now an opposition party.

“This moment should have happened 17 years ago,” Raul Danda, vice-president of UNITA, told AFP. A portrait of the charismatic but divisive rebel leader was placed before the coffin, which was drapped with UNITA’s green and red flag. “We have come to Lopitanga to pay homage and to confirm that we are here to continue your fight,” said UNITA chief Isaias Samakuva. “We bow before the defender of noble causes,” he said.

Angola, a former Portuguese colony, became a Cold War battleground after independence in 1975 when the Marxist-Leninist People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) seized control. The United States lined up behind Savimbi’s National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) rebels and the former Soviet Union and its allies like Cuba backed the MPLA.

At least half a million people died in the conflict for the vast, oil-rich southern African nation, which played out over more than a quarter of a century. Early in 2002, soldiers pursued the 67-year-old Savimbi across the province of Moxico in central eastern Angola. On February 22, they caught up with him. He fought back but was soon killed.

His body was taken to the provincial capital Luena and hurriedly buried in a cemetery, with a cross of iron on the mound of red soil. The public funeral is “an important sign of national reconciliation,” said Raphael, one of Savimbi’s 30 children. But no representative of the Angolan government was present at Saturday’s ceremony.

EFCC demands Naira Marley's transaction history from Mastercard and Visa

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has written Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. to furnish it with details on credit cards used by musician, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley.

The commission said the cards recovered from the artiste during his arrest were used for alleged identity theft and credit card fraud. According to court documents obtained by Punch, the EFCC’s letters to Visa and Mastercard – titled, ‘Investigation Activities’ – were dated May 13, 2019, three days after it arrested Naira Marley.

The letters were signed by the Zonal Head, EFCC, Lagos, Dein Whyte. “The commission is investigating a case of identity theft and electronic cards-related fraud in which the listed card information were recovered during investigation,” EFCC’s letter to Visa and Mastercard partly read.

In the letter to Visa, the commission asked the company to provide information about the last five transactions on each of three Visa cards recovered from Naira Marley. The first card with number 4921819410257431 was issued by Lloyds Bank Plc and bears the name Timea Fedorne Tatar. The second card with number 4539782440624281 was issued by Barclays Bank Plc and bears the name Nicole Louise Maylon, while the third card with number 4757147207869807 was issued by Santander UK Plc and bears the name Sharon Broad.

Likewise, in the EFCC’s letter to Mastercard, the commission asked the company to furnish it with information about the last five transactions on a Mastercard card recovered from the musician. The card with number 5354631405139323 was issued by Prepay Technologies Ltd and bears the name Linh H. Mendez Rojas.

Naira Marley was arrested on May 10 at 9 Gbangbala Street, Ikate, Lekki, Lagos, together with Omomniyi Temidayo (aka Zlatan Ibile) and three others for alleged advance fee fraud. Following his arrest, the anti-graft agency filed an 11-count against Naira Marley. The charges with suit number FHC/L/178C/19 were filed before a Lagos State High Court.

The artiste was later arraigned before Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on May 20, 2019. Following his arraignment, Justice Oweibo ordered that Naira Marley be remanded in the prison custody until May 30 to take the bail application filed by the defendant’s counsel, Taiwo Oreagba.

Breaking: United States now demands all visa applicants to provide their social media usernames

The U.S. now wants to know the social-media user names of people applying for visas as part of stepped up screening of foreign visitors and immigrants.

The change, which was first announced last year and taking effect this month, follows on a 2017 order by President Donald Trump requiring heightened vetting for visa applicants, according to a State Department official.

An estimated 14 million travelers and 710,000 immigrants to the U.S. each year will be affected by the changes, according to notes in the Federal Register. The official said national security is the top priority and every would-be traveler or immigrant already faced screening, including requirements to list their travel history, family member information, and previous addresses.

The American Civil Liberties Union had opposed the proposal, arguing the questions would create "an environment ripe for profiling and discrimination."

Serena Williams knocked out in the third round of the French Open by 20-year-old American, Sofia Kenin

Serena Williams’s bid to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title was thwarted again on Saturday when she was knocked out of the French Open 6-2, 7-5 by compatriot Sofia Kenin in the third round.

It was 37-year-old Serena’s earliest exit at the Slams since a third round loss to Alize Cornet at Wimbledon in 2014.

Kenin, the 20-year-old world number 35, will face eighth seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia for a place in the quarter-finals. Three-time Roland Garros champion Williams was attempting to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 majors.

I take responsibility for everything' - Blogger, Blessing Okoro writes one week after she was humiliated for claiming someone's house as hers

Its almost one week after and relationship blogger, Blessing Okoro has officially apologised to Nigerians and her fans across the world after she was humiliated for claiming someone's house as hers.

Trouble started for her on the day she turned 30 when she decided to unveil a new 7-bedroom duplex which she claimed she built (Read here).

But the owner of the house, Onye Eze, an Igbo business man based in China, got wind of her deception and exposed her online. Yet Blessing kept insisting the house was hers and she shared the plan of a house as proof. She also shared a video of the house to try to salvage her reputation. She also shared a photo of herself dressed in her nightwear in front of the house.

Below is her full apology....

Hey lovers.. I know it has been crazy lately and I am sincerely sorry.. I take responsibility for everything.. I hate that I had to put my friends and everyone else who looked up to me in this position.. Like everyone else I had goals set up for the year and one of them was to finish my house before my 30th birthday and it was a resolution I had layed out in public but because of certain reasons I couldn't meet up the dead line and that put me under a mental pressure for success.

I was impatient which led to beating myself too hard and I could have done better.. I AM REALLY SORRY I LET YOU ALL DOWN...I know better now.. I know not to go ahead of my victory and have small wins celebration.. Here's to everyone under any sort of pressure.

I had to experience a major meltdown to learn that patience is virtue.. Its only going to take a little time but the lines will eventually fall in pleasant places.. And for the incessant calls and text messages from my loved ones that were terrified seeing me on cuffs I was never arrested or detained and no police officers was associated with the act .it was thier best form of proving a point.

But i am grateful to everyone who stood by me, I hope you still find a place in your heart to forgive ,love me and accept me as the crazy happy girl you have always loved .
Thanks for not giving up on me entirely...
