Social media is a threat to a peaceful 2019 elections- former Liberian president, Amos Sawyer says

A former President of Liberia, Prof Amos Sawyer, has raised concerns over the use of social media in inciting violence during the 2019 elections.

The former Liberian president said this at an ongoing one-day peace conference by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, tagged ‘Peaceful Elections and National Development,’ held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja today February 7th.

“Social media poses significant challenges and increases the risk of incitement and conflict. It requires robust countermeasures by civil organisations and peace committee. The role of the media, though sometimes annoying, is vital and should be protected.” he said

Aleksander Ceferin re-elected as UEFA president for four-year term

Aleksander Ceferin has been re-elected unopposed as UEFA president for a four-year term at the governing body’s annual congress in Rome.

Ceferin, who began his term as president in 2016 as permanent successor to Michel Platini, was voted in by acclamation from the delegates of the 55 member associations of UEFA. The Slovenian vowed to work alongside European Club Association leader Andrea Agnelli in order to protect the Champions League from a breakaway 'Super League' of elite clubs.

"It's not a promise, it's a fact. Major clubs, if you had carried out your alleged plan, your clubs would have lost their status as 'great clubs' in the hearts of the people. The only thing 'great' about you would have been your past, and nothing else.

By respecting the football pyramid, the promotion and relegation system that lies at the heart of our sporting culture, results on the pitch, which sometimes differ from those in the account books, you remain great clubs in the world's eyes" said Ceferin.

Ceferin also urged FIFA to listen to UEFA's reasons for opposing plans for two new competitions - a global Nations League and 24-team Club World Cup.

Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Team reacts to the allegations that the men who drugged, raped and filmed a woman in a hotel have been freed

The Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Team have reacted to the allegations that the young men who drugged, raped, and filmed a 23-year-old woman have been freed by the Lagos state police (read here).

Twitter users alleged that suspected rapists, Razaq Oluwaseun Oke, 28, and Don-Chima George, 25 (left), have been freed by the Lagos State Police after Don-Chima's dad, who owns Dallankester Hotels in Lekki Phase, where the rape took place, intervened.

Twitter users also alleged that Don-Chima’s father got the police to arrest the victim's brother, sister and friend.

But the DSVRT has said that the allegations are false. They say the suspects are still in custody and will be prosecuted.

In a statement released via Twitter, DSVRT wrote:

Our attention has been drawn to the rumour that the perpetrators of rape of a 23 yr old lady have been released. This is to inform the general public that the suspects are still in custody. The DPP will ensure diligent prosecution of the case. @kingNelo2 @grooveeshakes @TheNamii
