The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today, February 21, arraigned the former Governor of Katsina State Ibrahim Shehu Shema and three others before Honourable Justice Maikaita Bako of the Katsina State High Court on a twenty two count charge of Criminal Breach of Trust, forgery and using as genuine.
Shema is being charged alongside three others, Sani Hamisu Makana, Lawal Ahmad Safana and Ibrahim Lawal Dankaba for allegedly diverting public funds to the tune of over Eleven Billion Naira to their personal use during his tenure as Governor of Katsina State.

One of the charge read that

“You Ibrahim Shehu Shema whilst being the Governor of Katsina, Sani Hamisu Makana whilst being Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Katsina State, Lawal Ahmad Safana whilst being the Permanent Secretary for Local government and Chieftaincy Affairs of Katsina State and Ibrahim Lawal Dankaba whilst being the Chairman Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Katsina State Chapter, between September, 2012 and May 2015 at Katsina, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court were entrusted with certain property to wit; an aggregate sum of N4,463,600,000 (Four Billion, Four Hundred and Sixty Three Million, Six Hundred Thousand Nairn Only) committed a criminal breach of trust in respect of the said sum by transferring it from Katsina State Joint Local Government Account domiciled at Access Bank , Katsina Branch to the account of ALGON domiciled at Union Bank, Katsina Branch and subsequently withdrew same and dishonesty convert it to your personal use (under various guises including funding security intervention fund to all the 34 local governments in Katsina State and falsely described in several payment vouchers and memos) and thereby committed and offence contrary to section 311 and punishable under section 312 of Penal Code Cape 96 Laws of Katsina State, 1991.

When the charge was read , Shema and his co-accused, pleaded not guilty. However, counsel for the prosecution Jibrin S. Okutepa SAN applied for a trial date and also asked that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody since there was no motion for their bail before the court.

J. B Daudu SAN, for the accused persons applied orally that his clients be admitted to bail. Okutepa opposed the oral application for bail made by the defence counsel. He argued that now that the court has assumed jurisdiction and that the charge has been read, there is a possibility of the accused persons escaping if granted bail. He urged the court to consider the gravity of the offence and refuse the oral bail application and order the defence counsel to apply formally.

In his ruling after listening to the argument of both counsels, Justice Bako granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N1,000,000,000 (One Billion Naira Only) and surety in like sum.
The case has been adjourned to 28th and 29th of March, 2017 for the commencement of trial.

Earlier before the charge was read, Justice Bako had dismissed two applications filed by the accused persons through their counsel J.B Daudu SAN which challenges the jurisdiction of the court and competency of the charge. Both applications were resolved in favour of the respondents.

'We lost Eric Arubayi and lots of people started faking love on social media" - rapper, Yungsix calls out industry colleagues

West African Idols 2007 runner-up, and gospel artist, Eric Arubayi, died on February 11th at Delta State University Teaching Hospital after battling an illness. Rapper, Yungsix isn't pleased with the 'fake love' his fellow colleagues began to show the singer after his death and spoke his mind in a short interview with HipTV. He said:

"We lost one of our colleagues and lot of people started faking love on social media like we all knew this guy. If you look at most people faking and showing fake love, they are not even following the guy. Most of them started following him after he died. Most people never posted his songs, most people where never there to support him as at the time he needed them but look at everybody now. Acting like they all wanted him to win. It was sad and i was hurt that they where taking advantage of something like that. Its not right. We are talking about life and death here. It's not right. I'm not just speaking for myself but for people who had it in their minds and hearts but never had the guts to say it because it was being fronted by celebrities."Watch the video below...

Chris Brown has been ordered to stay clear of ex-GF Karrueche Tran, after she filed legal docs saying he vowed to kill her and he's beaten her up before ... TMZ has learned.
Karrueche claims in a sworn statement to the judge, earlier this month Chris "told a few people that he was going to kill me." She then says Chris told the friends if he can't have her then no one else can, threatening he was going to "take me out" and "threatened to shoot me."

Karrueche also says several years ago Chris "punched me in my stomach twice," and "pushed me down the stairs." This would have been during the time Chris was on probation for the Rihanna beating.

The legal docs also claim Chris has threatened to harm her friends and even recently threw a drink at one of them.

She worries he's now putting action behind his words, and that's why she got the restraining order.
A few weeks ago Chris posted this video, which tracks with Karrueche's claim Chris was telling friends if he couldn't have her no one could.

A migrant facing deportation to Ghana as a result of the government's decision to review humanitarian protection laws has taken his own life, Times of Malta has learnt.

Frederick Ofosu died early Sunday morning.

Frederick Ofosu, who is in his early 30s, was found strangled with an electric cable in a Qawra building site on Saturday night.

He left a recorded message for friends explaining his despair, saying he was being forced to feel like a criminal when he had done no wrong.

Ahmed Bugri, director for the Foundation for Shelter and Support for Migrants, who identified the victim together with an embassy official, said the government's decision to review the so-called THPn system had forced him to the edge.

He was one of the estimated 1,200 migrants who fall under the so-called Temporary Humanitarian Protection-New (THPn) statuses to failed asylum seekers.

In November, the Home Affairs Ministry suspended the renewal of those holding THPn status, a move which incensed human rights organisations.

Migrants who fall into this category have been given until October 31 to start making arrangements to procure all the required documentation from their country of origin.

But human rights organisations say the scheme will require hundreds to comply with requirements the ministry knows they are unable to meet, including procurement of identification documentation and the labour market test.

A protest was held last month appealing for the government to change its stand. Photo: Steve Zammit Lupi

Mr Ofosu came to Malta eight years, forced out of Ghana because of extreme poverty, Dr Bugri said. He worked for a number of years, but after he lost his job he was faced with a number of demands from the authorities, including documentation he could never provide.

Last year, Mr Ofosu was handed a one-year suspended sentence by magistrate Charmaine Galea after pleading guilty to causing damage to a St Paul's Bay apartment.
Forcing people to live in constant fear is inhumane and for some, a death sentence

Looming in a world of indecision, and driven to despair amid rising rents, many migrants are now resorting to drastic measures, Dr Bugri warned, adding there had been a rise in admissions to Mount Carmel.

"Frederick's death has sent shockwaves among the migrant community, especially in Marsa. It will traumatise those that aren't stable."

Maria Pisani, director of Integra Foundation underlined the ticking bomb.

"Where individuals had some semblance of stability and security, they have now been thrown into chaos, and live in constant fear that they may be returned to the country that they fled."

Dr Pisani said the case of Malians who were detained for three months before being released last week, demonstrated the complexity of return.

"Not everyone can access documents, and so they are being condemned to this limbo - a state of foreboding and fear."

"We simply cannot allow this to continue to happen. Forcing people to live in constant fear is inhumane and for some, a death sentence."

Earlier this month, Times of Malta, Malta Today and The Malta Independent a took a joint stand to call on the government to review Malta's arbitrary system of Temporary Humanitarian Protection, which they said has effectively put the lives of hundreds of migrants in limbo.

FG reacts to recent attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

The Federal Government has released a statement condemning the recent attack on businesses owned by Nigerians in South Africa. Some aggrieved South Africans had accused Nigerians and other African Nationals of engaging in drug trafficking. In anger, they destroyed and burnt their businesses and homes. Read the statement from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the cut..

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seriously concerned about the incidents of xenophobic violence against foreigners including Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. The latest incident happened on 5th February, 2017 in the suburb of Rosettenville, Johannesburg and it involved attacks against foreigners including Pakistanis, Nigerians, and other Africans.

Domestic grievances over ownership of homes and default in payment of mortgages were used as justification to attack foreigners not in any way involved in the repossession and subsequent resale of these properties.
It would be recalled that in 2015, domestic grievances over unemployment and other challenges faced by South Africans were also used as justification to attack and kill.
The Nigerian Government strongly urges the South African Government to take the strongest measures to protect the lives and property of foreigners living in South Africa and also to quickly bring to justice the perpetrators of these heinous crimes.
The Ministry utterly deplores these acts of mindless violence and unwarranted attacks against other nationals in South Africa simply on the basis of their nationality or status. International law, and the age-old written law of hospitality amongst nations and societies recognize the sanctity of the lives and property of foreigners everywhere.
The Ministry has also observed that incidents of xenophobic attacks have continued unabated in South Africa since 2015, and that Nigerians are among the groups that have been mainly targeted for attack and looting of their property.
The Ministry has urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and law abiding but vigilant. It has also intensified contacts at high level with the South African authorities to address this unacceptable situation.
The Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally insists on, and will strenuously work towards, the protection of Nigerians anywhere, including in South Africa.
The High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria is being summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during which Government’s concerns on this matter would be brought to his attention.

Vladimir Putin orders Russian officials to put together psychiatric report on President Trump before they both meet - Report

Russian president, Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian officials to put together a dossier on U.S President Donald Trump's mental health before the two world leaders have their first official meeting, according to an unverified report by NBC news.

According to the report, senior Kremlin officials are doubting Donald Trump's psychological stability to handle the U.S presidency and hope to compile a mental health dossier for Putin to give him the psychological edge against Trump when the pair meet.

Read the unverified report after the cut..

A dossier on Donald Trump's psychological makeup is being prepared for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Among its preliminary conclusions is that the new American leader is a risk-taker who can be naïve, according to a senior Kremlin adviser.

Trump "doesn't understand fully who is Mr. Putin — he is a tough guy," former Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Fedorov told NBC News.

The file is being compiled by retired diplomats and some of Putin's staff, he added.

The attempt to get inside the U.S. president's mind is aimed at helping Putin plan for his first meeting with America's new leader, the date for which is yet to be decided.

"Very serious preparatory work is going on in the Kremlin, including a paper — seven pages — describing a psychological portrait of Trump, especially based on this last two to three months, and the last weeks," added Fedorov, who said he has known Trump since 2000.

The dossier was being revised regularly, he said, adding that many in the Kremlin believed that Trump viewed the presidency as a business.

Fedorov added: "Trump is not living in a box — he is living in a crowd. He should listen to the people around him especially in the areas where he is weak."
It is normal for any president or leader to be fully briefed before entering negotiations for the first time with a rival leader, but preparing a detailed dossier on the mind and instincts of a U.S. leader is unusual.

Putin's government is growing increasingly concerned about Trump's battles in Washington, according to Fedorov and former lawmaker Sergei Markov, who remains well-connected at the Kremlin.

Use smaller gods to swear-in African leaders - Pete Edochie to former Ghanaian president, John Rawlings

Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie who is in Ghana to shoot a movie with Kofas Media has suggested that African leaders swear-in into elected Government positions with smaller gods instead of the bible following the high rate of corruption in Africa.

The actor who paid a courtesy visit to the former president of Ghana, H.E Jerry John Rawlings on Friday, February 17, 2017, with casts of the new movie, said state officials who swear with the Bible become more corrupt when they are in office.

According to him, God forgives easily, so these officials do not take the oath serious whenever they hold the Bible to swear.

He further said that the smaller gods are not merciful like the Almighty God who created heaven and earth. He said they swear with gods so that it will put fear in these corrupt leaders to distance themselves from corruption.

Father and son who were very close die in head-on collision

Jeffrey Morris Brasher and his son Austin Blaine Brasher of Bankston, Alabama, died early Saturday morning in the most devastating way. Jeffrey Morris Brasher, a 50-year-old independent bread distributor was heading in to work at 4:10 a.m. on Saturday morning. While his son, 22 year old Austin, was headed home after a night of partying with friends.
Jeffrey Brasher was driving a 2006 Ford pickup and his son was driving a 2004 Chevrolet truck when they collided on a highway head-on, Alabama State Trooper Jonathon Appling. Jeffrey, was killed instantly while his son, Austin, was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he fought for his life for nearly five hours before succumbing to his injuries, Police said.

According to relatives and friends of the Brashers, Saturday’s accident has left the tight-knit communities of Fayette and Bankston, Alabama, devastated.

“You really just cannot imagine it,” Pamela Brasher Dennis, Jeff’s sister and Austin’s aunt, tells PEOPLE. “There are no words that can be said. Everybody’s life changed on Saturday morning. No one’s life will be the same after this.”Investigators in Alabama say alcohol played a considerable role in Saturday’s horrific head-on crash. But relatives say Jeff was not a drinker.

“Austin did drink and was coming home from partying when they crashed,” says Monica Marie Aker, one of Austin’s cousins. “To know that they collided head-on is one of the hardest things to comprehend. Our whole community is just devastated by this.”Dennis says her brother Jeffrey and her nephew, Austin were very close. The two could often be seen together on the local golf course, trying to improve their handicaps. Jeff, she says, was known throughout the community for his volunteerism, serving as the public address announcer for the local middle school’s football games.

Aker described Jeff as “the kind of guy who, if you needed something, you’d go to him because he would help. He wanted to make you smile and his kids were his number one priority.”

Austin, according to Aker, was known as “the life of the party.”

“In high school, he was quiet, but everyone knew who he was,” Aker says. “He was the little guy driving the big truck. He was very well-liked and could really get along with anybody.”Aker says that part of her is relieved her cousin didn’t survive Saturday’s accident.

“My worst fear was that Austin would make it through and then kill himself because he wouldn’t have been able to deal with killing his father,” she explains. “It would have destroyed him.”Dennis says that a joint funeral is planned for this Wednesday afternoon. Wakes for the father and son will be held Tuesday evening, with large crowds expected for both. “We are just so blessed”.

“Yes, we are struggling but we have been covered in prayer. People from all over the country have been reaching out to express their support. It has really helped us as we try to make sense out of the senseless."

The meeting which was earlier scheduled to hold at the International Conference Center ICC, was moved to Asokoro after some police officers stormed ICC and prevented the politicians from gaining access into the venue.

The stakeholders had the meeting to deliberate on last Friday's judgment by the Port Harcourt Court of Appeal affirming Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic national chairman of the party.
