Nigerian Senate will ensure speedy passage of minimum wage bill if forwarded to it on time by President Buhari – Ben Bruce

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, the Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity has assured Nigerians that the upper legislative chamber would ensure the speedy passage of the National Minimum Wage Bill if forwarded to it on time by President Buhari.

Last week, President Buhari assured Nigerians that the necessary machinery was being put in place to transmit an executive bill to the National Assembly on the N30,000 new minimum wage package negotiated by a tripartite committee comprising government and labour.

Also, the Chairperson of the tripartite committee, Ama Pepple, said last week that the enactment of the draft bill into law was critical to the operation and future reviews of the minimum wage.

According to Ben Bruce, the red chamber was eager to work on the document and ensure that its implementation would start next year, if the executive sent it on time.

He said, “The Senate will ensure the speedy passage of the National Minimum wage if the executive sends it to the National Assembly before the 2019 appropriation bill is presented by President Muhammadu Buhari for necessary consideration.

We are concerned about the common man. We are concerned about the plight of Nigerian workers and we are prepared to do everything possible to help the people of Nigeria. It is the responsibility of the executive to provide adequate resources to ensure payment of the minimum wage.

Our duty is to ensure that we pass the bill so that the implementation of the new minimum wage would be accommodated in the 2019 budget. It could still be part of the 2019 budget if the executive sends in the bill on time.”

With over 35 million registered Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, the need to empower and encourage the growth of small businesses in Nigeria has led MTN Nigeria to collaborate with Google to train owners of SMEs in different parts of the country. The October edition of the training was taken to the city of Abuja where about 30 entrepreneurs were trained on how to grow their businesses using digital tools.

The SMEs owners received free training on how to penetrate the market in a peculiar environment like Nigeria. The training equipped them on the use of various digital tools such as Google Insight and social media to interact with customers in order to obtain valuable feedback for improving business operation. Participants were also taught on how to use YouTube for customer interaction and Google+ Business for business optimisation and customer targeting.

Speaking on the training, General Manager, Enterprise Marketing, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka said, “In our engagement with SMEs, we noticed the need to inculcate some digital skills into the entrepreneurs, which would help them operate their businesses better and grow them.” She further mentioned that “The initiative, which empowers SMEs with world-class opportunities to develop and learn about the latest advances in the online space, is testament to our commitment to Nigeria and entrepreneurial development in the country, hence our partnership with Google. Google is a great platform and there is immense opportunity for entrepreneurs to leverage and utilise the innovative features of such tools.”

MTN Nigeria continues to seek ways to contribute to the Nigerian economy by extending its partnership capabilities to brighten the lives of small business owners within the country.

Chelsea legend Joe Cole retires from football at the age of 37.

Former England footballer, Joe Cole, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37.

Cole, who played for West Ham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Lille, Aston Villa, Coventry City and also won 56 caps for England between 2001 and 2010 announced his retirement today Nov 13th, describing his 20-year career as 'a dream come true.'

His retirement comes after a two-and-a-half year spell in America with United Soccer League outfit the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

'After 20 years as a professional, the time has come for me to hang up my boots,' Cole said in a statement.

'There are key moments in every professional’s career,' Cole continued in his statement. 'One of mine came when I was a young West Ham player.

'A senior pro, who was nearing his own retirement, said to me: “Enjoy every game, young man. It goes by in the blink of an eye and you’ll miss it badly after it’s gone.”

'He was right. Those words resonate even more now than they did back then. I tried to play and live by his advice every single day because being a professional footballer is an absolute honour.'

'Countless people have helped me through my career. I don’t want to single anyone out individually for fear of overlooking someone else!

'Simply, to the managers, coaches, back room staff and everyone who has helped me along the way: thank you.'

My favourite thing about being a professional footballer was the feeling you enjoy after coming back into the dressing room after a win,' Cole added.

It will be difficult to replicate that but I’ll always remember all of my former team-mates who I shared that experience with.

'I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have played with some of the very best players of my era and even more fortunate to call a lot of them friends.

'As a fan, I loved watching wholehearted, skilful players and this is what inspired me. I remembered what was special for me when I was sitting in the stands watching games and I tried to replicate this. I hope I was able to do this for some of the fans and people who have watched my games over the years.

'Winning trophies at Chelsea was particularly special for me. Those memories will live with me forever, as will the chance I had to share them with my family. My wife, Carly, and our three amazing children, my Dad, George, my Mum, Susan, are what I’m most proud of.

'Looking to the future, I want to stay involved in the game. I feel I can offer a lot as a coach and have really enjoyed the opportunity to undertake some of these duties with the Rowdies. To lend my experience to help other young footballers achieve their dreams, just like I did, is a big passion of mine.

'Whatever is next, I hope the next two decades are as special as my last 20 years as a professional have been. Again, a huge thanks to everyone who helped me along that path.'

Joe Cole won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup and reached the final of the Champions League in 2006.

Dad breaks down in tears after finishing marathon race without his son who died shortly after they registered for the race (video)

A heartbroken father in China's Jiangxi Province broke down in tears after completing his city's international marathon.

The marathon runner participated in the marathon on November 11 and completed it in 2 hours 50 minutes.

He signed up for this year's marathon with his son to encourage him to keep fit but the son drowned in August, shortly after the registration. The father insisted on running the marathon and each time he tried to give up, he took out a photo of his son, looked at it, and continued the race.

Immediately he got to the finish line, he fell and cried as he mourned his son who was meant to complete the race with him.

"He should have come with me," the grieving father cried to newsmen.

The father and his son ran the marathon last year for the first time and they completed it in 3 hours 40 minutes. He said his son said to him at the time, "It doesn't matter, dad, we'll do it again next year."

Sadly, that was never to be.

30% of Nigerians suffer mental illness - Federal Ministry of Health says

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Abdulaziz Abdullahi says about 20 to 30 per cent of Nigerians suffer from mental illness.

He spoke at the Mental Health Action Committee and Stakeholders’ Workshop in Abuja on Monday where he said with a population of about 200 million, Nigeria had a high rate of mental illness which implies that Nigeria has about 40/ 60 million persons with mental illnesses.

He said, “there are many different mental disorders, with different presentations. They are generally characterised by a combination of abnormal thoughts, perceptions, emotions, behaviour and relationships with others.

Mental disorders include: Depression, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses, dementia, intellectual disabilities and developmental disorders including autism. In Nigeria, an estimated 20 to 30 per cent of our populations are believed to suffer from mental disorders.

This is a very significant number considering Nigeria has an estimated population of over 200 million. Unfortunately, the attention given to mental health disorders in Nigeria is inadequate. The level of awareness of the Nigerian public on mental health issues is also understandably poor, and with lots of misconceptions.”

Director of Public Health, Dr Evelyn Ngige also said mental illness could destabilise a person more than HIV, heart disease, accidents, and wars combined. She said Nigeria’s mental health statistics was too bad, adding that the high rate of suicide in places like Lagos may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Ngige added, “In Nigeria, an estimated 20 -30 per cent of our populations are believed to suffer from mental disorders, which is a very significant number. Considering the current economic situation in the country, the above statistics are damning and in the light of the recent suicidal episodes recorded in parts of Lagos (which are obviously a tip of the iceberg), it forces a rethink in our general attitudes to mental health and questions our current maintenance of the status quo”
