DSS officials allegedly beat up teachers for flogging a student

Some teachers of the Federal Government Girls' College, F.G.G.C., Calabar were beaten yesterday by people they claim to be officials of the Department of State Service, DSS. The DSS stormed the school following a report that a teacher had beaten a senior student who happens to be the daughter of a DSS operative.
The teacher, Mr. Owai Owai, revealed that the senior student had taken some junior students to sweep her class, something Owai had warned them against doing, so he decided to punish the entire class for going against his instructions barring them from forcing junior students to sweep their classroom.
As he began to flog the students, one of them grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, prompting him to flog her some more. The girl reportedly ran outside the class and made a call to her DSS official mother. Soon after, a woman and a man walked into the class, took the cane from Owai and began to flog him with it. His colleagues who came to his rescue were also attacked.

Owai escaped when he could and watched from a safe distance as the woman made calls, not long after, he said three vans drove into the school carrying more DSS official, Vanguard reported.
He said; “They jumped out of the vans and started shouting ‘where is the teacher’. The woman, who did not know I had escaped, mistakenly pointed at another teacher, Mr. Ndarake, and they went after him.

“One of them brought out a rifle, pointed it at Ndarake, while another shouted ‘shoot him’. But the man with the rifle fired into the air, grabbed Ndarake and tried to force him into one of the vans. Ndarake resisted. He wrestled him to the ground and began using the butt of his rifle on his head and neck.”It was reported that the set of DSS officials who arrived later shot sporadically into the air and that any teacher who tried to film the incident on their phone was attacked and their device seized.
Mr. Mbeson Emmanuel, the Fine Arts teacher said: “Over six of us were attacked for trying to take pictures of the incident and I had my phone and binoculars confiscated and another teacher, Mrs Anne Agba, had her phone and N80,000, which was in her handbag, confiscated. She was severely manhandled."

He also revealed that the security man, James Asuquo, who tried to stop the van from leaving was also hit on the head and neck with the butt of their rifle. Afterward, they shot the lock on the gate and drove out. Asuquo has now been taken to the hospital due to the injuries sustained from the attack.

Reacting to the claims, Mr. Fubara Duke, the State Director of DSS, told Vanguard that the incident was a case of mistaken identity. He said that some hoodlums went to the school on Wednesday to beat a teacher for flogging a student. When they did not see the teacher they left and returned the next day. Duke said that when the teachers saw the DSS operative they began beating her and tore her clothes because they thought she was one of the hoodlums.

With regard to the gunshot claim, Duke said, “There were no gunshots and my men only went there on the invitation of the school authorities and the teachers mistook my personnel for hoodlums.

“They went there to sort out an issue, where the DSS operative’s daughter was beaten by a teacher, leaving her body with lacerations, but she was mistaken for one of the hoodlums, who went there to beat up a teacher on Wednesday.”Duke has asked the school administration to fish out the teachers who attacked the DSS lady so that they can face the punishment for their actions.

Burn survivor encourages others to be confident in open letter

Below is what she wrote...

"When I got burned all my doctors would say is "a year from now you'll get to do this or that again" so now that I'm half way there I feel its only fair to share the experience so far: for the most part it sucks!
At first I felt like I was only supposed to be optimistic through and through but its not true you do get uncomfortable not only physically but mentally as well and that's fine. A part of me is hopeful that I will still live a full life with my scars, the other half can't let go of what once was (looking at pictures before the incident doesn't help). Being in the position where I inspire so many it is only fair that I don't sugarcoat the journey. I do have my moments where I'm not feeling myself and want to hide from the world and I don't think its anything wrong with that. On the opposite side when I'm in that moment when I am completely confident in the beauty of my scars its like a high I don't want to get off of. If I can give honest blunt advice to anyone who wants it... You are entitled to feel how you want... don't allow anyone to determine how you view yourself. If you accept you, everyone else will have no choice but to embrace you as well. Yea I'm burned but shit I know I'm still popping *hair flip* #burnsurvivor"

Judge grants restraining order on travel ban all over the United States

A federal judge in Washington state on Friday temporarily put a nationwide block on U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration ban. Airlines have begun plans to begin allowing passengers from banned countries to board, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Judge James Robart who was appointed by President George Bush in 2003,made his ruling effective immediately on Friday, and Customs and Border Protection has already alerted major US airlines that it will begin to reinstate visas.
Following the ruling, government authorities immediately began communicating with airlines and taking steps that would allow travel by those previously barred from doing so, according to a U.S. official.
At the same time, though, the White House said in a statement that the Justice Department would “at the earliest possible time” file for an emergency stay of the “outrageous” ruling from the judge. Minutes later, it issued a similar statement omitting the word “outrageous.”
“The president’s order is intended to protect the homeland and he has the constitutional authority and responsibility to protect the American people,” the White House said.

The federal judge’s ruling, set up a high-stakes legal confrontation between the new president and the judicial branch over his temporary ban on entry by citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries as well as refugees. In his opinion, U.S. District Judge James L. Robart wrote that “fundamental” to the court’s work was “a vigilant recognition that it is but one of three equal branches of our federal government.”

“The court concludes that the circumstances brought before it today are such that it must intervene to fulfill its constitutional role in our tripart government,” he wrote. With the Department of Justice reportedly seeking to file the emergency stay as soon as Saturday, it could allow for a narrow time frame for previously barred travelers to enter the country. The state's attorney general, Bob Ferguson, said:

'This decision shuts down the executive order right now. No one is above the law -- not even the President'. The ruling however, is temporary. Legal analysts have said the ban could be difficult to permanently undo because the president has broad authority to set immigration policy.

Detroit born rapper, Eminem has taken shot at President Donald Trump in a profanity-laced verse on 'No Favors' a song off Big Sean's "I Decided" album, which was released on Friday, February 3, 2017. In his verse, Eminem said:

'I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando/ Your man don't want it, Trump's a b**** I'll make his whole brand go under'.He also touched on issues like police brutality, the Flint water crisis, racism in America.
This won't be the first time Eminem will attack Trump.
Back in October 2016, he dropped an explosive eight-minute freestyle, where the rapper shared passionate political commentary about the 2016 election and slammed Trump supporters.

So far, Trump is yet to respond either by a statement or through Tweets.

My ancestors weren't slaves, they owned slaves- Keke Palmer

Actress and singer, Keke Palmer was on the cover of Vixen Vibe magazine. During her Interview with the magazine, she talked about her history and the black culture. See more photos and read what she wrote after the cut..

I truly am thankful for this interview. The journalist, Marjua Estevez, truly took time to get my story across and I feel so much gratitude for that. I would like to say as I've continued and will continue my journey on knowledge of self that I have learned that while some are, not ALL blacks are "African American". Let me explain, some blacks are native to the American land such as "Native Americans". We all know that all humans came from Africa at first and moved all everywhere else developing different appearances and cultures. Through research I'm learning that the idea that ALL BLACKS in America were slaves is simply not true. Just as Angela Basset says in "Jumping the Broom", "My ancestors weren't slaves, they owned slaves." I remember during TJVP my white teacher tried to tell me also that some blacks owned slaves. The idea had hurt me so that I immediately decided she was a racist and putting the blame on other blacks. As I've grown and gained more knowledge I realized how great of a "gag" it would be if someone could use a phrase and a skin tone to control a people's psyche by creating emphasis on only one part of history. If you assume simply because of the color of your skin that you should carry only ONE side of your cultural AMERICAN history that falls under the ideology of what it means to be an "African American", I wonder how you would perceive your life and your possibilities 🤔. That would be like a Korean person taking on the history of a Japanese person simply because they have similar features. I'm reading .. I'm learning .. I'm questioning .. I'm processing. Thoughts?

Over 100,000 visas have been revoked since President Trump signed the order on immigration

During a court session in Virginia on Friday, February 3, 2017, government lawyers revealed that over 100,000 visas have been revoked since President Trump's executive order on immigration and travel was signed on January 27.

The number came in response to a question from the judge about how many people have been affected by this order.

Erez Reuveni, from the Office of Immigration Litigation at the Civil Division of the Justice Department, also said no returning legal permanent residents have been denied entry.

The judge also extended a temporary restraining order against removing lawful permanent residents until next Friday.
