Herbalist who raped and impregnated his daughter in Edo state bags 21 years jail term without the option of fine

A Magistrate Court in Benin, Edo State has convicted a 52-year-old herbalist, Jacob Alonge, for raping his daughter, Gift, at their home at Ososo village, Akoko-Edo.

The herbalist was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment without the option of fine. Earlier, the prosecution told the court that the convict, who turned his daughter to a sex slave for several years, also instructed her never to sleep with any other man.

Aside from raping the 17-year-old girl repeatedly and impregnating her, he procured abortion for her and shaved the hair in her private parts. Gift had become pregnant a second time when the matter came to public knowledge and he was arrested by the police and arraigned in court. The pregnant girl, however, died along with four others in an accident along Benin-Auchi highway, while traveling from Ososo to Benin on the way to the court.

Among the dead were Gift’s uncle, two workers of a non-governmental organisation, Brave Heart Initiative, helping Gift with the case, and the cab driver. But after learning of the auto crash, Jacob who had earlier pleaded guilty to the counts against him and was about to be sentenced, changed his plea on the day his daughter and the others died.

The court on Thursday concluded his trial and sentenced him to five years on the first count of possession of fetish wrap of Gift’s pubic hair; two years for raping and impregnating her and 14 years for repeated sexual assault. The presiding Chief Magistrate, D. I. Adamaigbo, said the counts should run concurrently.

Presidency places Amnesty Nigeria on security watch list

Amnesty Nigeria has been placed on security watch list by the Presidency ahead of the nationwide “revolution” protest scheduled for August 5 and promoted through #RevolutionNow.

The human rights group was labeled anti-government for retweeting the notice of revolution which the Presidency claimed is aimed at overthrowing the constitution. Amnesty Nigeria, a known critic of President Buhari's administration has been quite vocal over the alleged injustice and trampling of human rights being witnessed in Nigeria especially in the last 4 years.

Confirming the group has been placed on security watch list, a government official told Punch;

“There is a hashtag calling for revolution. A revolution means to overthrow Nigeria’s constitution. Those behind the move have sent out messages that they will start the revolution on August 5.

“Amnesty International Nigeria Office retweeted that message. The issue with is not with the organisers really.

“Of course, the government has been having sleepless nights over consistent reports by Amnesty which have been projecting the government in a bad light.

“But for the organisation to get involved in national politics and retweet such a message is alarming.

“When a Presidency official asked them whether their Twitter handle was hacked, they deleted the tweet. The Presidency is watching Amnesty Nigeria because of this.

Yul Edochie receives curses from IG users after he shared photo of Regina Daniels and husband and blessed their marriage

Yul Edochie is receiving heat from Instagram users because he said a prayer for Regina Daniels and Ned Nwoko despite the age difference.

Yul shared a photo of the young actress sitting on the thighs of her much older politician husband.

He captioned the photo: "Picture of the day for me. May this happiness never seize in your lives. Wish you both the very best."

His prayer for them angered Instagram users who do not approve of the union because of the huge difference in age and because Regina is his 6th wife. They then took it upon themselves to curse Yul.

They reminded him that he recently claimed to have given his life to Christ yet he's supporting a polygamous union.

Governor Bello denies plans to assassinate his deputy, Simon Achuba

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state has denied claims made by his deputy, Simon Achuba, that he is after his life.

Achuba at a press conference in Kogi state yesterday August 1st, alleged that Governor Yahaya, who he has been having a running battle with, has detailed some assassins to eliminate him.

Governor Yahaya has however dismissed the allegation. In a statement signed by his chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Mohammed, the governor said the allegation is ''bogus and an exhibition of a blind rage by an angry suckling man with a long-term pattern of abnormal behaviour characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance”.

He demanded his 'aggrieved' deputy to provide evidence to back up the assassination claim. The statement in part reads

“We do not train assassins, and as such, the state government or her personnel cannot be involved in sending assassins to murder any human soul let alone a deputy governor of our dear state. Despite these unsubstantiated ramblings, however, we deem it fit to clear the air by letting the general public know that the Kogi State government would not be dragged into any form of political gerrymandering concocted for the furtherance of any person’s political interest or notoriety.

We warn Mr. Simon Achuba who is known to history as a man whose affinity for violence is unparalleled, not to judge us by his own standards.

“The report of the Kogi State Government Commission of Enquiry on the Iyaño ethnic crises in 2017 is still fresh in our memories.

“The Kogi State government led by Alhaji Yahaya Bello, therefore, rejects the futile attempt at seeking to link it to any assassination attempt on the deputy governor, and we advise that people desist from seeking political capital from scenarios they imagine would advance their parochial cause, no matter how banal such causes may seem.”

Nigerians and Kogites in particular are aware that it is not in the character of the administration to persecute perceived opponents, let alone the second in command of the ‘New Direction’ team.

“We have remained a model for peaceful engagement and political dialogue. Any inclination at portraying us otherwise will not be acceptable.”
