FG raises alarm over fake COVID19 vaccines from China

The Federal Government has raised alarm over three thousand doses of fake COVID19 vaccines sent to Africa from China.

The Director of Hospital Services of the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi, made this known in a letter dated March 26, 2021, to the Chief Medical Directors/Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions.

The letter in part reads

“The Ministry is in receipt of a letter from the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 regarding the arrest of about 3,000 doses of fake COVID-19 vaccines which were Africa-bound from China.

The report further indicates that the fake COVID-19 vaccines are already in circulation in Africa.

To prevent the importation of fake vaccines, kindly note that the Nigeria Customs Service has designated Nnamdi Azikiwe international Airport as the only Point of Entry (PoE) for imported COVID-19 vaccines.

I am therefore to bring this to your notice and dispel any possibility of COVID-19 vaccines being available for sale or being administered by any unauthorized institution. Please accept the assurances of my best regards.”

As of the time of writing this report, The Nation reporter tried to reach Dr Adebiyi via calls to authenticate the said letter, but to no avail.

However, a top source in the FMoH confirmed to The Nation that the letter is authentic, and emanated from the Ministry to the CMDs and MDs of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions across the country.

Paul Onuachu's goal helps Super Eagles defeat Benin 0-1 as Nigeria seal AFCON Qualification with a game to spare

Belgium league goal scoring machine, Paul Onuachu scored a late winner as the Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Benin 1-0 at the Stade Charles de Gaulle on Saturday night, March 27, at the 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Onuachu nodded home in the 93rd minute ending Benin’s eight year unbeaten home run, after scrambling for the ball during a frantic goal mouth action.

With the goal, the Super Eagles now top Group L with 11 points from five games.

Benin will now have to fight for qualification next week in Sierra Leone, after Sierra Leone drew 0-0 in Lesotho earlier today.

The Super Eagles will now play Lesotho in Lagos next week, but the game will have no significance giving Rohr an opportunity to test fringe players.

Kano people need more education than flyovers - Kwankwaso tells Ganduje

Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has told his successor Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to prioritize education instead of flyovers in the state.

Commenting on Ganduje's plan to construct a flyover with a N20bn loan at Hotoro roundabout in Kano Metropolis in an interview with BBC Hasua Service on Friday March 26, Kwankwaso said the project is the responsibility of the federal government and not the state government.

He said;

“Even though we need flyovers in Kano, but what people need the most in the state is education. They need to focus more on our children to be educated and get entrepreneurial skills to depend on themselves.

“Instead of Ganduje to go and see the president and ask him to do the bridge, because it is the responsibility of the federal government to do the flyovers connecting Kano City to Wudil, the governor went ahead and presented a photo that was badly designed which even the president did not understand and has something better in his office.”

Kwankwaso who noted that it was not a good idea to add to the debt of the state just because of a flyover, disclosed that his administration did not leave any debt to the state government. He added that he is surprised from that moment till now, Kano had N185bn debts to settle.

Nigeria’s poor corruption rating by TI is as a result of inadequate data - Lai Mohammed

Nigeria?s poor corruption rating by TI is as a result of inadequate data - Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has said that Nigeria’s current poor corruption rating by Transparency International is as a result of inadequate data.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday on TI's January 2021 report in which Nigeria scored 25 out of 100 points (the country’s worst rating since 2015), the Minister stated that they found few discrepancies after analyzing the process that TI used in the rating.

Lai added that they found some data sources in which Nigeria’s course has remained flat over the past 10 years.

He said;

“We actually also analysed the process that the TI used in the rating that was used recently and we found quite a few discrepancies in the rating process, including some data sources in which Nigeria’s course has remained flat over the past 10 years.

“It’s either we’ve not flooded enough data or they have not revised all data because we found it strange that the country’s rating in certain areas has remained the same for a period of 10 years and we are taking the media measures so that they can get this data in respect of these sectors, because we believe that it’s not possible for you not to improve, for you not to lose points for 10 years. So, there’s a bit of discrepancy there.

“So, the federal government, through its presidential council on ease of doing business, has embarked on certain reforms at the ports, at the Corporate Affairs Commission, that will make it easier to do business. We saw the rating, but it does not reflect correctly the efforts of this government in trying to curb corruption.

“The government has put in place various reforms in fighting corruption, but some of these reforms will take time to yield the desired results because the matrix used by TI is not just about grafts alone. It includes how transparent or how opaque the services are, and you’ll find out that when we scored in the 2018, 2019 transparency reports, we realised that we scored very low in the area of ease of doing business in particular.

“That is why the federal government embarked on reforms, especially at the seaports, because that is one area where we scored very low. You’ll see that in recent times, we’ve embarked on numerous reforms at our seaports so that our rating will improve.

“We realised that following the release of 2019 TI corruption perception index, we initiated reforms to improve on ease of doing business indices. This is because we found that up to 40 percent of the country’s corruption perception survey indices related to business, process and general public service delivery.

“So, that is why we are concentrating on the ease of doing business, making sure that people can get to the ports, clear the goods in good time and by the time some of these start yielding fruits, I’m sure that perception will improve.”

We've written a protest letter to Buhari over Ibori's loot - Governor Okowa

Caricamento: 1996300 su 1996300 byte caricati.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said that they have written a protest letter to President Buhari, asking for the £4.2 million James Ibori loot which was repatraited to the country by the United Kingdom government to be returned to Delta state.

The Delta state Governor who revealed this on Wednesday March 24 when he appeared on a Channels Television programme, said he believes that since the money was stolen from the state it would only be just to return the funds back to the state.

Okowa said;

“I have spoken with the attorney-general of the federation. My attorney-general went to have a meeting with him. I think that we are working and we are likely to come on the same page. We have written a formal letter of protest to Mr President.

“In the same manner of the relationship created between the UK and Nigeria, we also expect that the Nigerian Government will do the same thing by being magnanimous to return the money back to the source, which is Delta State."

The Governor said that to guarantee that Deltans will benefit from the repatriated loot, they provided options to the Federal Government and made a compelling case for the state.

Okowa added;

“We have made two suggestions; return the money directly to us or apply it directly to projects that we feel are of importance and are in Delta State so that Deltans can directly benefit from the repatriated funds and I don’t think anybody can fault that line (of thinking)."

American nurse sues Lagos police commissioner over ‘unlawful and indefinite’ detention

American nurse sues Lagos police commissioner over ?unlawful and indefinite? detention

An American nurse, Kari-Ann R’ouke has filed a lawsuit against the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Hakeem Odumosu, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Adegoke Fayoade over her ‘unlawful and indefinite’ detention.

Kari-Ann in the lawsuit filed before the federal high court in Lagos through her counsel Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, disclosed that she was arrested on February 9 and has been detained indefinitely over the death of her partner.

The American nurse who is seeking her release from police custody and an award of N100 million as “general, aggravated, special and exceptional damages against the police", said she has been detained for more than one month over a murder case without being charged to court for the alleged crime.

In the court affidavit, Kari-Ann disclosed that she met her partner online and came to Nigeria on January 21, 2021 with the aim of establishing a humanitarian outfit.

It read;

“Upon completing her assignment in Nigeria, she departed for the Murtala Mohammed International Airport on February 8, 2021, enroute America.

“She was, however, stopped by the Immigration Department on the ground that her COVID 19 Test result had expired, whereupon she was made to sleep at the airport purportedly for a new COVID 19 test.

“It was later the following day that she was informed that she was being arrested because her friend had passed on, unknown to her. She has been in police custody ever since."

Her counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Adegboruwa in the lawsuit noted that the CCTV footage of the hotel showed clearly that “Kari Ann left her friend in the hotel room in good health in the company of his friends and relatives, all of whom were initially arrested but have now been released."

The lady who has allegedly been a victim of extortion since her detention, stated that she is entitled to bail and only being persecuted because of her status as a foreign citizen.

Mr Adegboruwa also said the autopsy report showed that the deceased died of cardiac arrest, without any foul play.

He added;

“Kari Ann has been a subject of extortion ever since, even though no prima facie case has been established against her. Since her incarceration, Kari Ann has lost about 23 pounds in weight, she has emaciated tremendously, she has suffered bouts of malaria, dysentery and she is going through extreme emotional and mental stress, without any link to her family or relatives."

Asides seeking to be released and a compensation of N100m, Kari-Ann also seeks an order directing that she is entitled to move freely in any part of Nigeria, without let or hindrance from the police.

The nurse also asked the court to order the respondents to fortwith cease and abstain from applying for a remand order against her over matters pertaining to financial crimes to which she has been in detention since the February 9, 2021.

Formula One car raci

ng champion, Lewis Hamilton has criticized the Catholic church after the Vatican refused to bless same-sex marriages.

Hamilton, a self professed Catholic, shared his opinion after Elton John's condemnation of the church's decision, which was announced this week.

Grammy award winning singer, Elton John wrote: "How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they 'are sin', yet happily make a profit from investing millions in 'Rocketman' - a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy."

 Hamilton reposted Elton's post and said their refusal to accept same-sex marriages was "unacceptable".

He wrote: "Standing in solidarity with Elton John and the whole LGBTQ+ community on this issue.

"It is unacceptable that in this day and age, anyone should face prejudice or discrimination based on the person they love, especially in the name of God who we are told loves us all equally.

"It is incredibly sad that many will now feel they have to choose between their faith and being their true self, and I want my followers to know that I stand with you and I support you, and you deserve happiness.

"Love is love, don't let anyone tell you differently."

Hamilton begins the defence of his seventh world title in Bahrain on March 28.

Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex unions - Vatican

Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex unions - Vatican

The Vatican on Monday, March 15, stated that priests and other Catholic Church ministers cannot bless same-sex unions and that such blessings are "not licit" if carried out.

The Vatican's doctrinal office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), issued the ruling in response to questions and moves in some parishes to impart such blessings as a sign of welcome to gay Catholics since the Church does not permit homosexual marriage.

Pope Francis approved the response, the CDF said, adding that it was "not intended to be a form of unjust discrimination, but rather a reminder of the truth of the liturgical rite".

It said such blessings were not permissible even though they were "motivated by a sincere desire to welcome and accompany homosexual persons" and help them grow in the faith.

The CDF note said that since marriage between a man and a woman was a sacrament and blessings are related to the sacrament of marriage, they could not be extended to same-sex couples.

"For this reason, it is not licit to impart a blessing on relationships, or partnerships, even stable, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage (i.e., outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman open in itself to the transmission of life), as is the case of the unions between persons of the same sex," it said.
