Photos: Senate President Bukola Saraki elevated to the position of 'Waziri Ilorin', a position last held by his late father

Senate President Bukola Saraki has just been elevated to the position of 'Waziri Ilorin' in Kwara State today by the Emir, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.

Saraki was at the Palace of the Emir of Ilorin for a Thanksgiving Prayer Session organized by the Emirate to celebrate recent victory at the Supreme Court.

According to Saraki, 'as the prayer session was coming to an end, the Emir, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, surprised all of us by announcing my elevation to 'Wazirin Ilorin.'

The position of 'Wazirin Ilorin' was last occupied by his late father, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki.

German footballer, Mesut Ozil retires from international football over racism and discrimination

Mesut Ozil has confirmed that he is retiring from international football with immediate effect following the "treatment he received from the DFB."

The Arsenal attacker claims that the way he has been treated by the German football association makes him "no longer want to wear the German national team shirt."

Ozil announced the decision in the third part of a lengthy statement released on his Twitter account, with the first part explaining the reasoning behind his controversial photograph with Turkey president Recep Erdoganand the second update criticising how the media and sponsors reacted to the incident.

DFB president Reinhard Grindel was the focus of the third and final part of the statement, as Ozil hit out at the official, claiming: "I will no longer stand for being a scapegoat for his incompetence and inability to do his job properly."

Following Germany's disastrous World Cup performance, where they failed to get out of their groups and lost to both Mexico and South Korea, Ozil was heavily criticised by the media and by the DFB, with Grindel even urging the midfielder to make a public statement on his meeting with Erdogan, also questioning his credentials as an international player following the incident.

Ozil detailed how Grindel attempted to benefit from the fall-out of the player's meeting with Erdogan, aiming to use it as a means to express his own political views and undermine Ozil in the process. He also accused the DFB president of racism, stating that "I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose."

As well as Grindel, the 29-year-old highlighted the actions of politician Bernd Holzhauer who called Ozil a "goat-f***er" and Chief of German Theatre Werner Steer who wished for the footballer to "p*** back to Anatolia."

The way Ozil has been treated by German media, politicians and especially the DFB has caused him to make the "difficult decision" to announce his international retirement, saying that: "I now feel unwanted and think that what I have achieved since my international debut in 2009 has been forgotten."

In those nine years, Ozil has played 92 times for his country, scoring 23 goals. He was part of the side that lifted the 2014 World Cup and also helped Germany to the semi-finals of the 2012 and 2016 European Championships.

Ozil also went with Germany to the 2010 and 2018 World Cups and was named national team player of the year five times.

Photo: 52-year-old married father of four arrested for defiling 12-year-old girl, blames spiritual forces

A 52-year-old father of four, Henry Oboh, who was recently arrested by men of the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in a community known as ‘One Man’ in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state, has blamed spiritual forces for his misconduct.

Oboh allegedly dragged his victim into his room and threatened her with a kitchen knife before having canal knowledge of her.

While parading the Oboh before newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, said Oboh had dragged the victim into his room when her parents were not around.

“On June 6, 2018 at about 21.25 hours, one Faith Sunday, a 12-year-old female of One Man village in Akamkpa LGA reported at Akamkpa Police Division that on June, 2, 2018 at about 13.18 hours, one Henry Oboh, of the same address, dragged her to his room when her parents were away. He threatened to stab her with a table knife and thereafter had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The case was transferred to the CIID on June 11, 2018 for discreet investigation. The suspect has confessed in his statement and will be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation,” Inuwa said.

When intterogated, Oboh said he deeply regrets his action.

“Some forces pushed me to have sex with the small child. I was not myself and how I did that I cannot explain. I never planned to have sex with her. Something pushed me all of a sudden and that was why I immediately surrendered myself when the police came to arrest me. I am ready to face the consequences of what I have done. I am seriously regretting what I did. I am a mechanic. I am married with four children.” he said

Son of ex-Osun state permanent secretary commits suicide

The first son of the late Permanent Secretary, Bureau of General Services, Office of the Governor of Osun State, Mrs Olufunke Kolawole, Tolulope Kolawole, has committed suicide.

According to Punch, the 32-year-old married man ended his life in his apartment on Thursday last week at Halleluya Estate in Osogbo. He was said to have been frustrated as eveything wasn't working for him and he was unable to fend for himself.

According to his neighbors, Tolulope had always complained bitterly about the downturn in his farm and also how life has been terrible for him since the passing of his parents. His mother, Olufunke Kolawole, was abducted on her way to Abuja on an official assignment and eventually killed in Kogi State last year.

A resident of the area, who identified himself as Remi Taiwo, said the deceased had confided in one of his friends residing in Ibadan, Oyo State, about how rough things were for him and that his wife had complained bitterly about it.

“The friend, whose name I can’t recall, was said to have been very helpful with monetary support and had warned him against taking any negative step to finding a solution to his challenge.”

A police source also confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, saying the case was reported at the Dada Estate Police Station, before it was transferred to the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo.

“The young man was said to have lamented the lull in the business bequeathed to him by his late mum. He was said to be constantly complaining to one of his friends in Ibadan, Oyo State, and that one kept encouraging him and offering him financial support. But he decided to hang himself when he could no longer bear it. He was said to have put a rope round his neck and was standing on a chair, but had not kicked the chair away before somebody arrived at the scene. The person was said to have pleaded with him and had ran to call residents, but the deceased was said to be found dangling before help could come.” he said

The police source said some members of the family of the deceased went to the police and told them what they knew about the incident.

Never, ever threaten the US again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few have ever suffered' - Trump issues stern warning to Iranian President

Yesterday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned the United States that it could shut down international oil shipments in the strategic Strait of Hormuz if Washington continued to provoke Tehran.

"We have always guaranteed the security of this strait. Do not play with the lion's tail; you will regret it forever" Rouhani told diplomats in the Iranian capital. The Iranian president has previously threatened to close the strait in response to US President Donald Trump's threat to stop Iranian oil exports through the waterway.

The strait is one of the world's most important maritime trade routes and connects the oil-rich Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

However, President Trump wasn't going to be threatened and he responded with a very stern warning to Iran never to threaten the United States again,

To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 23, 2018
