Repentant Boko Haram members can become President - Nigerian Army General

The General Officer Commanding the 7 Division, Major General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu says that repentant Boko Haram fighters can become the president of Nigeria.

Major General Biu during an interview with newsmen in Maiduguri on Sunday, called on Boko Haram fighters to surrender unconditionally and further pointed out the benefits of surrendering which include leadership opportunities.

He said, “Boko Haram should lay their arms unconditionally and be accepted. Opportunities are out there for them, they can be rehabilitated.

“An ex Boko Haram having laid his arms and turned away from his negativity, stands to be a president of this country; he stands to aspire to any position in this country.

“Why is he wasting his time when he cannot even deliver?

“As a professional soldier we would continue to do what we know best and that is to project our determined effort, we would not be distracted by some of the activities of our detractors and some of the collaborators.

“Nigeria deserves peace, Northeast deserves peace and the people of Borno deserve peace because it is only when there is peace there will be development.”

DR Congo Health Minister resigns over Ebola

DR Congo's Health Minister, Oly Ilunga Kalenga has resigned after the responsibility for managing the country's Ebola outbreak was taken away from him by President Felix Tshisekedi.

Kalenga's resignation letter was shared on Twitter in protest to the decision to remove the Ebola response directly from his supervision and reassigning it to a multi-disciplinary team that would report directly to him. According to him, this might "risk creating harmful confusion and cacophony".

"As a result of your decision to place the response to the Ebola outbreak under your direct supervision ... I hereby submit my resignation as health minister," Ilunga said.

"As in any war, because that is what this is, there cannot be several centres of decision-making for risk of creating confusion," he added.

He criticised the outside pressure to deploy a second Ebola vaccine manufactured by US-based firm Johnson & Johnson.

"It would be fanciful to think that the new vaccine proposed by actors, who have shown an obvious lack of ethics by voluntarily hiding important information from medical authorities, could have a significant impact on the control of the current outbreak," he said.

Kalenga also issued guidance against the use of new vaccines against Ebola, stating that the Merck vaccine currently in use is the only one that has proven to be effective. This is coming after the World Health Organization declared 'Ebola' as a global health emergency.

The North is tolerating Buhari because he is from the region – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, the former Senator representing Kaduna Central in the red chamber in his speech at a conference held to prepare Emerging Leaders in Kaduna on Monday, alleged that President Buhari is being tolerated by notherners because he is from the region.

According to the former APC Chieftain, Buhari has not been held accountable by the North even with the killings and destruction of property in the region. Shehu Sani stated that when power moves to the South, the North is always good at holding leaders accountable, but they are however silent when it moves to the north.

“The North is tolerant of bad government because Buhari is in government and he is from the North.

“When power move to the South, the North is good at holding leaders to account and when it moves to the North, we keep silent.

“We are shy. We are cautious. We are afraid of telling our own that the road in the North is bad. We are more courageous to tell the truth when the President doesn’t come from our region.

“Questioning President Buhari is more sympathetic when people are killed in the South-West than in the North, and this is because, they (South) are holding him to account. Here in the North, you don’t because they are shy. They believe he is infallible and that he cannot be called to question" he said.

Sani added, “If 50 people are killed in Katsina and the representative of the state is not ready to stand up in the Senate to talk about his people being killed, then it will go on and nobody will know. But if (Pa reuben) Fasoranti’s daughter is killed and a representative from Fasoranti stood up and say I Senator blah blah stand up to condemn the murder, the nation and the world will know.

“But if your people are dying here and the people you elected are afraid of being embarrassed and they don’t want to be categorized as been disloyal and be seen in the bad book, they will kill as many as possible and the perception of people outside is that all is well. So, the North must not be docile because one of their own is in office.

“For this country to survive, President Buhari must listen to the voices of reason. You may not like the face of Wole Soyinka, Balarabe Musa, and Obasanjo, but read through the contents of what they have written and see where adjustments can be made.”

The 45-year-old representing Surulere constituency at the Lagos State house of assembly spoke on the current situation of the country's Movie Industry.

According to him, the Federal Government should make it difficult for foreign content to come into the country so that local content from Nigeria can grow.

In his reaction, Daddy Freeze said, 'Dear Brother Desmond, I love you, but I’m not with you on this. I should be able to choose what I want to watch if I’m paying for it, shouldn’t I?
Why don’t you strive to raise Nollywood to Hollywood standards and then people will gravitate towards Nollywood naturally?'.
