Andres Iniesta confirms retirement from International football following Spain's World Cup exit

Andres Iniesta has confirmed his international retirement after Spain's shock penalty shoot-out defeat to Russia resulted in their World Cup elimination. Spain joined the likes of Germany, Portugal and Argentina in making an early exit when Igor Akinfeev kept out Iago Aspas' penalty in Moscow.

Iniesta started on the bench on Sunday, coming on midway through the second half as Spain attempted to retake the lead cancelled out by Artem Dzyuba's spot-kick, but could not inspire a victory.

And the 34-year-old, who will now join Vissel Kobe after calling time on his Barcelona career, confirmed he has played his final game for Spain. "It's a reality that this is my last game with the national team, on a wonderful stage," Iniesta, who scored the winner in Spain's World Cup final victory over Netherlands in 2010, said.

"The endings are not always the way we dream. The national team will continue to be successful because of the level of players we have and that is what they should try. It would be an advantage to say that Lopetegui's thing has to do with the result, in the end those of us who have the ball are the players. The main culprits in football are the players that are the ones on the field" he said.

President Buhari calls for repatriation of stolen assets without legal obstacles

President Buhari on Sunday in Nouakchott, Mauritania called on nations where looted assets have been stashed to release them without the usually long technicalities involved in the process of reptriation .

Speaking during his introductory remarks as the leader of the African Union theme of the year, Winning the Fight against Corruption, A Sustainable Path to Africas Transformation, shortly before the commencement of the debate on the African Anti-Corruption Year, President Buhari said:

“We must all collectively work to place high on the agenda the need for open and participatory government, as well as the repatriation of stolen assets without procedural technicalities and legal obstacles”.

President Buhari also appraised the anti-corruption efforts so far:

“During the last 6 months, we have engaged in multi-sectoral dialogue with a broad range of actors including parliamentarians, national anti-corruption agencies, civil society, media, youth and women groups and development partners. We have convened three (3) different regional Consultative Workshops in line with my campaign programme in an effort to sensitize our people on the evil effects of corruption on our societies. These workshops will be extended to other regional blocs as we continue the fight against corruption in a bid to transform our continent.”

The Nigerian President also informed the gathering of his intention to partner with the AU Chairperson to further push the frontiers of the anti-corruption battle: “I plan to convene the African Youth Congress in Abuja within the next quarter, and we will be working with the Chairman of the African Union, His Excellency, Paul Kagame and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, to organize an Interactive Dialogue on the theme at the next session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York during the high level segment.”

President Buhari used the opportunity of the gathering to call on all other Member States that are yet to ratify the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combatting Corruption to take all necessary measures to sign and ratify it with a view to achieving its universal ratification during this calendar year as the Republic of Mauritius just did, becoming the 40th State Party to the Convention.

The President thanked African Heads of State and Government “for the continued support provided to me in driving and amplifying the African Union anti-corruption agenda. Your unwavering support remains a strong source of strength and encouragement as we look forward to an even more vigorous second half of this year.”

The AU theme of the year leader recalled that the meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council held under the chairmanship of Nigeria in April 2018 highlighted the corrosive effect that corruption can have on societies, considered the link between corruption and conflict and its implications for peace and security in Africa and concluded by emphasizing the need to utilize South-South cooperation mechanisms through voluntary information exchange, mutual legal assistance and sharing of best practices among national anti-corruption agencies, audit agencies and investigative bodies.

President Buhari stressed that, “the scourge of illicit financial flows continues to bite, eating back the gains and militating against the attainment of our aspirations under Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.”

He reiterated Nigeria’s abiding commitment to the fight against corruption.

14-year-old schoolgirl goes missing after outing with boyfriend who swears he knows nothing of her whereabout

A 14-year-old schoolgirl has gone missing after leaving her mother's shop in Ikorodu to go out with her 20-year-old boyfriend.

Bilikisu Oseni, an S.S.1 student, left her mother’s shop in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State, with her boyfriend, Wahis, on Sunday, June 24, 2018. Wahis, a motor boy, took Bilikisu on a motorcycle to his new apartment on Igbosoro Road, Ikorodu, and that was the last she was seen, Punch reports.

When Bilikisu did not return home, her mother, Fausatu Oseni, got Wahis arrested. Wahis was eventually granted bail after his relatives promised that he would produce Bilikisu. But he was mandated to return the victim in 7 days or be re-arrested.

However, the suspect denies knowledge of his girlfriend's whereabouts and says he suspects she's with another lover.

Wahis said: “On Sunday, I went to pick her from the shop on a motorcycle. I took her to know my new apartment.

"As she got to my place, I got a call that her mother had started complaining and was looking for her. I put her on a motorcycle to return to her mother; I never knew she did not get home.

"If I had known this would happen, I would have asked her to wait a little at my place or take her to their house myself. Some people said they sighted her at Agodo around 1pm.

"One of her friends, Gloria, told me that she made mention of a boyfriend who stayed alone in the Odogunyan area. I believe she is afraid that her mother will beat her up and she went to stay with the boyfriend.

"She must be around Odogunyan. We started dating in January 2018. The police have given me till Wednesday to produce her and I don’t know where else to go. My mother has cried endlessly over this. I have suffered seriously, including police torture. I have spent a lot of money to look for her. I can’t eat or sleep.”

CBN recovers N60bn 'Illegal charges' from commercial banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria has facilitated the refunds of a total of N60 billion by commercial banks to their customers on March 31, 2018 through the intervention of the consumer protection department.

CBN director of Payment Systems Department, Dipo Fatokun, disclosed this at the ‘Meet The Executive’ forum organised by the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) in Lagos at the weekend.

Fatokun, who noted that the recovery also includes $18 million, 26,000 euros and 6000 British pounds, said such resolution will help build more confidence in the payment system and bring more people into the financial services net.

In furtherance of its statutory responsibility to promote confidence in the financial system, the CBN had over the years implemented a measure of consumer protection mainly in the form of customer complaint management.

The apex bank has also directed all commercial banks to resolve disputes arising from use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) within three days.

Fatokun, who was represented by the Assistant Director, Banking and Payments System Department, Taiwo Oladimeji, said maximum USSD transaction limit remained N100,000 per customer per day, adding that any amount above that required the customer to execute indemnity at the bank.

When paraded before journalists on Wednesday, Mrs Mutairu said she did not claim to be a police officer but a security agent in order to create awareness for people on issues relating to crime. She added that the uniform was provided for them by Mr Oni, who employed them. Mrs Mutairu also said she had been doing the job for 15 years.

When asked about her salary, she said, “we don’t collect salary, we only get commission on the materials we sell. We sell an outline which goes for ?1,200 and my commission is ?300 on each one.” On his part, Mr Johnson said he had only worked with the group for three weeks and that they go around in their uniforms as security personnel creating security-alert and selling their “outline.
