Obasanjo attacks Buhari again, says government ''confused, incompetent to stem killings''

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has once again come hard on the Buhari-led government, describing it as incompetent and incapable of addressing the killings and poverty in the country.

Obasanjo said this in a letter read on his behalf at a one-day national summit on insecurity and killings in Nigeria convened by the Northern Elders Forum, Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Pan Niger Delta Forum in Abuja yesterday July 18th.

Represented by former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Obasanjo stressed that President Buhari was, by his action and inaction, encouraging the killings in various parts of the country. He recalled the discussion he had with the elder statesman about the danger to the nation’s democracy when he hosted him (Ango) in Abeokuta some weeks ago.

“When you kindly paid me a visit a couple of weeks ago, we deliberated on the danger to our democracy, our common identity, our commonality of purpose, our dream and our unity in diversity. We lamented the harm that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, by his action and inaction, has done and is doing to our commonwealth and our common heritage. The obvious indication is that the government is seemingly confused and has got to the end of its tether and the nation is being left divisively and perilously to drift. Earlier last week, I noted in a speech some undesirable elements being allowed and being introduced to our democracy by this administration. If these are not stopped, they could be the death knell of our democracy,” he said

''Police is using their helicopter to threaten my life and that of my family'' Governor Fayose

Governor of Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on Wednesday raised alarm over aerial surveillance of the Government House, Ado-Ekiti by a police helicopter. According to the governor, the police chopper has constituted danger to his personal safety, his family, workers and visitors to the Government House.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor described the development as “brazen show of naked force and abuse of power by the Federal Government.”

According to him, he sees no reason for the aerial surveillance of his official residence and office since the state governorship election is over. He also accused the nation’s security forces of allowing themselves to be used to intimidate political opponents despite being funded with tax payers’ money. His statement in part reads

“They continue to fly helicopters over the Government House and Governor’s Office in a way that compromises the safety and well-being of residents and workers. The helicopter flies so low that it runs the risk of crashing into high-rise buildings and masts within the premises. The noise pollution this causes is enough irritation. This brazen show of naked force and abuse of power is as ungodly as it is undemocratic. If the security forces belong to all Nigerians and not to President Muhammadu Buhari and APC, it should not be biased in this blatant manner. It is unprofessional of the security forces to allow themselves be this debased, running APC errands when they are funded with resources that belong to all of us. They are obligated by the Constitution to be apolitical and not willing tools in the hands of the powers-that-be Once again, I say I will not be intimidated. I will stand on my feet until every injustice is upturned and the freedom and liberties of our people are restored. The thief runneth when no one pursueth. They are afraid of their shadows.” Governor Fayose said

'Its a total disgrace that Turkey will not release a respected U.S. Pastor, Andrew Brunson from prison' - Trump Tweets

US Congress and President Donald Trump are outraged over pastor Andrew Brunson's continued detention in Turkey.

President Trump urged Recep Tayyip Erdogan to "do something" for the clergyman's release on Twitter saying, 'A total disgrace that Turkey will not release a respected U.S. Pastor, Andrew Brunson, from prison. He has been held hostage far too long. @RT_Erdoganshould do something to free this wonderful Christian husband & father. He has done nothing wrong, and his family needs him!'.

On Wednesday, a judge in Izmir said the clergyman would be held in jail until facing charges of terrorism and espionage.

The case of the American evangelical Christian pastor from North Carolina has added further strain to US-Turkish relations, with some members of US Congress calling for sanctions against Turkey while critics of Turkey have described Brunson as a "hostage."

A total disgrace that Turkey will not release a respected U.S. Pastor, Andrew Brunson, from prison. He has been held hostage far too long. @RT_Erdogan should do something to free this wonderful Christian husband & father. He has done nothing wrong, and his family needs him!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 19, 2018

The 50-year-old Brunson has spent nearly two years in prison, accused of links to Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who lives in the United States, and who Ankara accuses of being behind the failed coup attempt of July 2016.

Last year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested Brunson's release may be tied to the extradition of Gulen from the United States. Brunson is also accused of ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the EU.

In the court's third hearing, it was decided to keep the pastor in prison until the next hearing on October 12. Brunson, who has lived nearly two decades in Turkey and served at a small church in Izmir, denies the charges. He faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted.

Speaking outside the courtroom on Wednesday, US charge d'affaires Philip Kosnett told reporters: "I don't believe that there is any indication that Pastor Brunson is guilty of any sort of criminal or terrorist activity."

Governor Bello condemns burning of Dino Melaye's constituency projects

The Kogi State government has condemned the burning of four of the constituency projects of Senator Dino Melaye in Lokoja, the state capital by some hoodlums. Recall that yesterday, two of the secondary schools renovated by Dino Melaye to celebrate his 3rd year in the National Assembly, were vandalized and burnt on Tuesday night. Dino was meant to commission the projects yesterday Wednesday July 18th.

Reacting to the incident, the Director General, Media and Publicity to the state governor, Kingsley Fanwo who spoke on behalf of government during an assessment tour of the burnt facility, said the state government has directed security operatives to fish out the arsonists.

"Irrespective of who is doing the project, the fund is from the government. So whether it is the executive or legislative, such projects should rather be applauded and not destroyed", he said.

The state commissioner for Education, Mrs. Rosemary Osikoya who was amongst the government officials who visited the sites said government will not fold it's arms until the perpetrators were fished out.

"Exams are ongoing and these building is being used since January 2018. We expect that people will respect the sanctity of education. This act is masterminded and not accidental. The building were burnt including the chairs. If not for some serving Corps members around who tried to put out the flame, it would have been worse than this. We appeal to everybody to collaborate with us in education and not use it as a melting point for political sabotage. This is a dastard act; the state's interest should be paramount rather than the individual political ego", she said.

Dino Melaye is yet to release an official statement reacting to the development. Dino has been on a running battle with the state governor, Yahaya Bello.

Apapa residents raise alarm as third tanker loaded with petroleum product falls and spills petrol all over

Another tanker loaded with petroleum product fell at Berger suya bus stop, Olodi Apapa, Lagos, yesterday, July 18, 2018, and residents are worried that the tanker situation in the area is a disaster waiting to happen.

Yesterday's incident is the third to happen on that same spot and each time these tankers fall, they spill their contents on the road and into gutters, risking an explosion. A day before the tragic Otedola bridge tanker explosion occurred, a tanker loaded with petrol fell at the same spot at Berger bus stop in Olodi Apapa and two days later another with diesel fell, a resident said.

Concerned residents have raised alarm about the warning signs the government has turned a blind eye to. They fear lives and properties could be lost if action is not taken soon.

One resident, Roland Nduka, who reached out to LIB said:

Tanker loaded with petroleum product fell at Berger suya bus stop olodi apapa Lagos today 18/07/2018.

This is the third tanker that has dropped at this particular spot and the government is doing nothing because the police are there collecting bride from them.

Right now the petrols from the tanker have all poured into the gotters and the only saving grace is the weather. Even the road is not accessible to fire tankers to come rescue because the trailers with containers have blocked everywhere.

A day before the otedola tanker explosion one loaded with petrol dropped at the same spot and two days later another with diesel.

This spot has aboki that does suya, and also a lot of business investment waiting to go up in flames because of the amount of danger this possesses for them to keep turning at this spot.

The business owners are complaining but nothing is being done. As we know Nigeria, they will wait for lives and properties to be burnt before proper action will be taking.
