EFCC docks woman for visa fraud in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, June 13, 2019 arraigned one Mary Senge before Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Jabi, Abuja. Senge was arraigned on a four-count charge, bothering on forgery and obtaining money by false pretence.

Count one of the charges reads: "That you Mary Senge on or about the 27th day of July, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of N2,765,751(Two Million, Seven Hundred and Sixty--five Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty-one Naira) from John Folefal Abila when you falsely represented yourself as able to procure a Canadian Visa for his brother Lekeaka Gilbert which pretence you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) a of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act."

She pleaded not guilty to the charges. In view of her plea, prosecution counsel, Best Ojukwu prayed the court for a trial date and for the court to remand defendant in prison custody.

Defence counsel, Evi Ofou, however, made oral bail application for the defendant, explaining that he didn’t have enough time to file a bail application as a result of the fact that the Federal High Court, Maitama was not opened as well as the fact that he got the charge sheet on Tuesday 11, 2019, while the following Wednesday 12, 2019 was a public holiday.

He promised the court that his client will always be available in court for the trials. The prosecuting counsel opposed the bail application, stating that the defendant is a Cameroonian citizen and will likely jump bail and return to her country.

The judge admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N5million, (Five Million Naira) with two sureties in like sum, who must live within the jurisdiction of the court, and must be senior civil servants, who own landed properties and have three years evidence of tax payment, certified by the FIRS. They would also have to submit their three passport sized photographs to the court registry. She remanded her in Suleja Prison until her bail conditions are met.

“Igbo Presidency doesn’t exist” Okorocha cautions Southeast

Newly sworn-in Senator Rochas Okorocha, has informed Nigerians from the South East to wake up from their slumber and work hard to become politically relevant as there is nothing like ''South East presidency''.

The former Imo state governor said this while speaking with newsmen shortly after he was sworn into the Senate yesterday Friday June 13th. Acording to the governor, such an agenda as the Igbo Presidency cannot become a reality if those who desire it do not work hard for it.

“Power is not given, power is taken. The South East cannot just fold their arms and expect power to be given to them just because you want power. Power does not go with sentiments, sometimes it’s on issues on ground.

Democracy is about the people and the South East alone cannot make themselves president. So you cannot be talking about Igbo presidency, it doesn’t exist. We may be talking about Nigeria’s president of Igbo extraction but that depends on what other geopolitical zones think about the issue.

For me, what is important is let power be given to somebody who has something upstairs who can put food on the table of the common man, irrespective of religion or where you come from.”

The Senator added that the South East needs to mend fences across the country in other to remain politically relevant.

“There is need for the Igbos to mend fences. We are neither here nor there now politically. We are not in the ruling party, neither are we making impact in the opposition. So, there is need for us to get married to the rest of the nation politically.”he said

Father who murdered his five children is sentenced to death

A South Carolina father has been sentenced to death for killing his 5 children with his own hands after which he drove around with their bodies for 9 days.

Timothy Jones Jr., 37, was sentenced to death on Thursday, June 13, one week after he was convicted of five counts of murder.

The computer engineer with an $80,000-a-year job murdered his kids, ages 1 to 8, in their Lexington home in August 2014. Afterwards, he drove around with their bodies for nine days before dumping them in garbage bags on the side of a dirt road in Alabama.

Solicitor Rock Hubbard told jurors Jones has been selfish all his life and tried to break up his father’s second marriage because he wasn’t getting enough attention.

In his own marriage, he controled his wife's every decision. When his wife left him, Jones couldn’t stand that his control was over so he took his anger out on the kids. Whenever any of his kids indicated any intention of wanting to be with their mother instead of him, he mistreated them, Hubbard said.

Jones first killed 6-year-old son Nahtahn after the boy confessed on the phone to his mother, but not to him his father, that he broke an electrical outlet, Hubbard said. Over the next several hours, Jones got cigarettes, took his oldest daughter first so she wouldn’t call for help, and left the three other kids with their brother’s body.

In a confession, Jones said he strangled 7-year-old Elias with his hands and chased down 8-year-old Merah before choking her. He then used a belt to choke 2-year-old Gabriel and 1-year-old Abigail because he said his hands were too big.

After killing the children, Jones loaded their bodies into his SUV and drove around for nine days before dumping them in five black garbage bags on a dirt road near Camden, Alabama. He was arrested hours later after an officer at a traffic checkpoint in Smith County, Mississippi, said he smelled a horrible odor of decomposition.

During the trial, Jones' father, stepmother, sister and two brothers all took the stand to ask that he be given life without parole, instead of the death sentence. Jones' father removed his shirt to show the courtroom tattoos of his slain grandchildren.

Jones ex-wife, Ms Kyzer also requested mercy for her ex-husband even though she had said "If I could personally rip his face off, I would."

"He did not show my children any mercy by any means," she said. "But my kids loved him and if I'm speaking on behalf of my kids and not myself, that's what I have to say."

Timothy Jones Jr. showed no emotion as the jury delivered the verdict after less than two hours of deliberation, according to TIME. Jones’ father, who was in court, hung his head in his hands as the verdict was read and other family members appeared to cry.

Jones is the second person to be sent to South Carolina’s death row in five years. The state has not executed anyone since 2011 and lacks the drugs to carry out lethal injection.

Court remands fake EFCC’s employment officer in prison

Justice J.K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has remanded Bisong James Oyen, a fake employment officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in prison custody.

Oyen was arraigned by the EFCC, Port Harcourt’s Zonal Office on Thursday on a two-count charge bordering on forgery and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 1 (2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act CAP M17 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2007, and punishable under Section 1 (2) of the same Act.

One of the count charges read: “That you, Bisong James Oyen, on or about 11th December, 2018 at Port Harcourt, Rivers State within the jurisdiction of this honourable Court did forge Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Appointment letter and delivered same to Talbort Young for employment with intent that it may be acted upon as genuine, a pretext which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act CAP M17 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2007, and punishable under section 1 (2) of the same Act”.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges when read to him.

In view of his plea, Prosecution Counsel, Esin-Otu Ebipade urged the court to fix a date for the commencement of hearing. The defendant was not represented by any Counsel.

Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to June 18, 2019 for hearing and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.

Oyen got into troubles when a petitioner alleged that, sometimes in April 2018, he logged into the EFCC’s web address, in a bid to apply for a job but could not get through the application. However, he allegedly received a call from one Alex (Kalu Patrick Ikechukwu), now at large, that he should send his document to an email address: jimmyexclusive85@gmail.com and pay some money into an account number of one of the new generation banks.

The petitioner allegedly got an assurance, after paying the money, that he would receive an appointment letter that would qualify him for training by the EFCC. After waiting for a while without any communication from the EFCC, he reported the matter for investigations and the results showed that Oyen was neither a bonafide employment officer of the EFCC nor authorized to receive any payment from any member of the public on behalf of the Commission.

In the same vein, Kelvin Ogbonna was arraigned before Justice J. K Omotosho on a two-count charge bordering on false pretences.

One of the count charges read: “That you, Kelvin Ogbonna on or about 12th February 2019, in Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this honourable court had in your possession (your email address: barrito1@gmail.com and ms087704@gmail.com) documents containing false pretence which you knew or ought to know contains false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 6 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other related offence Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3). He pleaded not guilty to the charges when read to him.

In view of his plea, Prosecuting Counsel, Esin-Otu Ebipade prayed the court to fix a date for commencement of trial. However, defense counsel, B. M Mgbamoka did not oppose the prayers of the prosecuting counsel nor sued for the bail of his client.

Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to June 18, 2019 and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody for commencement of trial.

Ogbonna’s troubles started when the EFCC acted on some intelligence concerning his alleged impersonation, possession of scam documents and internet fraud and arrested him accordingly. However, investigation showed that he was in possession of one apple iphone 6S and Hewlett Packard (HP) Pavilion Laptop, all of which contained false documents.

Upon interrogation, Ogbonna confessed that he was involved in internet fraud by using a fake FaceBook profile with the name Fredrick Keefer and Google hangout accounts with the usernames barrito1@gmail.com and ms087704@gmail.com to defraud his victims via scammed mails.
