Legendary South African activist Ahmed Kathrada dies at 87

Ahmed Kathrada is a renowned South African activist and close friend of Nelson Mandela.
He died on today at the age of 87 after a brief illness following a brain surgery he had recently.


Derek Hanekom, the chairman of the Kathrada Foundation confirmed his death saying,


'Comrade Kathy was a gentle, humane and humble soul. He was a determined revolutionary who gave his entire life to the liberation struggle of our country,"
The Nelson Mandela foundation has also issued a statement on his demise that reads, 'He was a member of that generation of South African leadership which made a post-apartheid conceivable. His commitment to core values was unshakeable, inspiring a life-time of service and informing a rejection, right to the end,

Former NNPC boss, Andrew Yakubu withdraws N1bn suit against EFCC

Former Managing Diretor of NNPC, Andrew Yakubu, has withdrawn his N1 billion fundamental human rights lawsuit filed against EFCC. Yakubu filed the suit after the antigraft agency arrested him following the discovery of $9.7 million and £74,000 in his house in Kaduna on February 3rd.


At the resumed hearing of the case this morning, Yakubu's counsel, Adeola Adedipe, told the judge that he had filed a notice of discontinuance of the suit on behalf of his client. Adedipe said that the bail given to his client was the reason the suit was being discontinued. The presiding judge, Justice Mohammed, there after struck out the suit.

Pres Buhari congratulates Bola Tinubu as he turns 65 tomorrow, says Nigerians have benefitted a lot from his personal sacrifices

President Buhari has extended his warm felicitation to former Lagos State Governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the occassion of his 65th birthday which comes up tomorrow.

In a stament released by his media aide, Femi Adesina today, President Buhari referred to Tinubu as a "great leader, whose foray into politics ushered in a better understanding of building consensus to achieve historical feats, like unseating an incumbent government".


President Buhari said as Tinubu turns 65 years old, he believes the Asiwaju raised the bar for many political leaders across the country as a two-term governor of Lagos State, and also bequeathed a style of leadership that completely altered the landscape of the commercial capital.

Recalling his pleasant and intellectually enriching encounters with the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom over the years, President Buhari re-affirmed that the nation has benefitted a lot from the personal sacrifices, political experience and intellectual foresight of the APC chieftain, and still stands to gain more.

He prayed that the almighty God will grant the Asiwaju good health, longer life and more wisdom to serve his country and humanity.

16-year-old girl accused of killing her newborn baby avoids jail, gets community service and probation

A Nebraska 16-year-old, Antonia Lopez, who admitted to throwing her newborn out a second-floor window right after the baby was born last year, has been sentenced to probation. The teen who was supposed to be tried as an adult for killing her child and faced up to 20 years in jail, received clemency from the judge after her lawyer, claimed that the teen mum threw the newborn baby away because she thought the child was stillborn.


Apart from the probation, she would be sent to a group home for causing the baby's death. The Omaha World-Herald reports that, Juvenile Court Judge, Christopher Kelly after accessing her mental state, told the girl Friday, March 24th that she must undergo therapy, delete her Facebook account and perform only 50 hours of community service.

The girl had pleaded guilty.

Police say Lopez, gave birth Sept. 30 at her mother's apartment in Omaha, Nebraska, tossed the child out the window, then told her mom.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine also said that what the girl did wasn't planned, that "it was more of a panicked reaction."

An autopsy determined the baby was in her seventh month of development.
