Ex-Banker jailed 10 years for stealing depositors’ money (photo)

Justice Abiodun Adesodun of the Ekiti State High Court, has convicted a former cashier officer with Fidelity Bank, Ado branch, Ado Ekiti, Michael Adedayo Ihinolurinjon, and sentenced him to ten years in prison for stealing money from the bank’s vault and diverting customers’ deposits to personal use.

Ihinolurinjon was on Thursday, August 15, 2019, found guilty of a two-count charge of stealing in a criminal case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office. The offence, according to the charge sheet, was contrary to Section 390 (g) of the Criminal Code Laws Cap 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The bank had written a petition to the EFCC alleging that while still a staffer, Ihinolurinjon stole the sum of N8,891,000 (Eight Million, Eight Hundred and Ninety-One Thousand Naira) from its vault, and also failed to remit a total of N7,251,600 (Seven Million, Two Hundred and Fifty-One, Six Hundred Naira) he collected from customers to the bank’s account.

“Our preliminary review showed that Michael fraudulently diverted the sums of N8,891,000 and N7,251,600.00 of the branch vault and customers’ cash respectively. The cash deposit of N7,251,600 received by Michael from various customers between 1/9/16 and 19/9/16 were neither posted to their respective accounts nor the cash accounted for,” the bank stated in its petitioned dated October 17, 2016.

The bank also accused Ihinolurinjon of absconding from duty ‘upon sighting one of the customers whose cash he had fraudulently diverted’.

Following the petition, the Commission went into investigation after which the accused was originally charged with obtaining through false pretence in a one-count charge filed in 2017.
The charge was later amended to a two-count, bordering on stealing, upon which he was re-arraigned on June 24, 2019.

While prosecuting the case, the EFCC, through its lawyer, Abdulresheed Lanre Suleman, called nine witnesses and also tendered several exhibits.

After listening to arguments on both sides, Justice Adesodun found the defendant guilty as charged, and sentenced him to five years imprisonment on each of the two counts. The sentencing, he held, would run concurrently.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of fine of N100, 000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) on each of the counts. He was also ordered to pay a sum of Seven Million Naira as restitution to Fidelity Bank Plc, being the petitioner in the case.

Nigerian university workers to commence strike August 19

Nigerian university workers have said that they would embark on a warning strike from Monday until their demand to the government is met.

The planned one-week strike, which will last from August 19 to 23, is coming four months after the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities suspended their two-month strike. In a letter on Friday, August 16th, the non-academic unions comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, said;

“At the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum on August 18, 2019 without a positive response from the Federal Government of Nigeria, members shall proceed on a five-day warning strike in all branches from Monday 19 to Friday 23 August 2019.”

The unions said the contending issues include payment of earned allowances, university staff schools matter, renegotiation of 2019 FGN/unions agreement among others. It therefore directed all members to comply with the action or face sanctions.

The letter further said, “You are therefore directed to properly mobilise our members for this action. All defaulting branches shall be sanctioned accordingly. Please be guided.” Recall that the unions embarked on a nationwide strike on December 4, 2017 following the failure of the government to address their grievances, however, it was suspended in March 2018.

R. Kelly fails to appear in court after 'refusing transport' from his Chicago jail cell.

Embattled singer, R. Kelly failed to appear for a court hearing on Thursday, August 15, after prosecutors allege he “refused transport” from his Chicago jail cell.

The 52-year-old was arrested in Illinois last month on several charges including child pornography, coercion or enticement and transporting for prostitution after prosecutors in several states accused him of using his fame to recruit young women and girls into illegal sexual activity.

He was supposed to appear in court on Thursday, but prosecutors claimed he 'refused transport.'

At the hearing which proceeded without him, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Gonzalez said: “The defendant was to be brought to court today. That was all worked out. The sheriffs were going to be bringing him over.”

“As I understand it, he refused transport and so that is why the defendant is not before your honor today,” she continued.

But Kelly’s defense attorney, Steve Greenberg, denied the allegation, arguing instead that the singer failed to show because of transportation issues.

“I don’t want to discuss matters that I discussed with the U.S. Marshals Service in open court,” Greenberg told Flood, according to the report. “Suffice it to say, the Marshal Service says that moving Mr. Kelly is a large undertaking.”

Kelly faces 40 counts, including two state counts brought against him earlier this month in Minnesota, that carry a combined maximum prison sentence of more than 500 years. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges aside from the new ones. He has not been arraigned on the new charges.

The 21 charges he faces in Illinois accuse him of sexually abusing three girls and a woman over a roughly 10-year period starting in the late 1990s. The two Minnesota charges, prostitution, and solicitation, accuse him of inviting a 17-year-old girl to his hotel room in 2001 and paying her $200 to dance naked with him.

The 13 federal counts brought in Chicago accuse him of, among other things, filming himself having sex with underage girls and of paying off potential witnesses in his 2008 trial to get them to change their stories.

He is also accused of running a racketeering enterprise that arranged for girls to have sex him in New York.

The disgraced singer is due to appear for another status hearing on Sept. 17.

A British ski instructor who laughed while raping and assaulting a lady, jailed in Australia

A 29-year-old British Ski instructor has been handed a 10 year jail sentence in Australia, after brutally raping a lady and physically assaulting her 25-year-old male friend.

The duo were attacked on a street in Jindabyne, South of Canberra and near the border between New South Wales and Victoria in July 2018. The injuries the assault and rape victim suffered were so serious that the police originally believed the attack had more than one perpetrator.

Matthew James Williams pleaded guilty in April 2019, to the incident in which he knocked the 25-year-old victim unconscious before raping his friend . The woman he sexually assaulted told the police he laughed at her and punched her face several times as she tried to fight him off.

His arrest came five days after the crime was committed and he was also named the sole suspect after the police found his DNA and watch at the scene. The ski instructor was sentenced to 10 years with a non-parole period of seven years today August 16, in the NSW District Court at Queanbeyan.

Williams who is to expected to serve his jail time in Goulburn maximum security prison, was in Australia on a temporary visa working as a ski-cross and alpine racing teacher at the world famous Blue Cow Perisher Ski Resort at the time of the attacks.
