#USMidterms2018: Democrats win back control of the House of Representatives while Republicans retain control of the Senate

The US Democrats have taken control of the House of Representatives in the mid-term elections, dealing a blow to President Donald Trump.

Taking control of the lower chamber of Congress for the first time in eight years will enable Democrats to thwart the president's agenda however, Trump's Republicans are set to strengthen their grip on the Senate.

Tuesday's election was seen as a referendum on a polarising president, even though he is not up for re-election till 2020. Female candidates stole the spotlight in an election cycle that had been billed as the Year of the Woman.

After a series of wins down the East Coast and throughout the Midwest, it was clear that Democrats had won the minimum 23 seats to needed to capture the gavel. It was not immediately clear how many more new members could be added to their total, since several seats in California are considered to be toss-up races and those returns will not be in until early Wednesday morning on the east coast, or perhaps later than that.

Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has accused the opposition party, PDP, of doing absolutely nothing to improve the lives of every Nigerian when they were in power for 16 years.

Akpabio who was a member of PDP until August this year when he defected to APC, said this during the official reception of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nsit Atai Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He condemned the members of the opposition party in the state for destroying the campaign billboards of APC members

“If you look outside this venue, you’ll see the posters of the outgoing governor, Udom Emmanuel, they are not torn. It shows that APC is a peaceful party. While coming down here, along the Airport Road, you will notice that the billboards of the APC are all torn. We are for peace, Nsit Atai is for peace. Let me assure us all that they can only tear your posters and billboards but they cannot tear your votes come 2019. Akwa Ibom people have benefited from the Federal Government through employment, projects, and social intervention programmes like N-Power and PDP did nothing for the state in 16 years.’’ he said

'Why I killed my pastor friend, the assistant pastor and the women leader' - arrested evangelist confesses

An evangelist has confessed to killing an Umuahia pastor, his alleged mistress, and the assistant pastor.

Prosper Peter Akachukwu, who was arrested by the Police in Abia State in conjunction with Zone 9 Command, told journalists Tuesday at the Police Officers’ Mess in Umuahia that he plotted the killing of his friend, Blessed Kelechi Iwuanyanwu, a pastor in a new generation church in Umuahia, for many decades.

Mr Iwuanyanwu, who was the founder of Winds of Glory Ministry, Umuahia, was murdered along with the two others at his residence, located at Umuobia Housing Estate in the early hours of October 14.

Peter said his reason for the killing was that the deceased refused to assist him financially after he helped him succeed as a pastor by taking him to a native doctor years ago.

He said he recruited three persons who murdered Mr Iwuanyanwu, his alleged mistress and Woman Leader in the church, Ruth Eze and the assistant pastor, Kalu Ikeagwu.

The suspect, from Mbaise in Imo State, said Iwuanyanwu, from Mbano also in Imo state, was his childhood friend. He said they both attended the same secondary school and started ministering together as preachers. But he killed him because he refused to fulfil his promise to settle him after helping him to grow his church through the use of charms.

He said:

Iwuanyanwu was my childhood friend and we were also co-pastors. When he was having challenges in growing his church I took him to a native a doctor in Ondo State to get charms to attract members to his church and also perform miracles for them. I also gave him N100,000 to support him during the trip.

We started the process in 2013 and we have been going to the shrine to renew the charm every year since then. But when the charm started working and Iwuanyanwu started making money he forgot me.

Whenever I call him for financial assistance he would tell me not to disturb him, which was why I decided to attack and collect some of his personal belongings.

Narrating how Iwuanyanwu and two others were killed, the suspect said he hired assassins from Aba and they lay in ambush in front of Mr Iwuanyanwu’s residence around midnight.

He said:

We trailed him to his house when he was going home and laid an ambush around his house waiting to attack him at midnight.

As soon as he came back and opened the gate, the boys went into the apartment, where they matcheted the three of them to death.

I was outside when the boys started the operation. They invited me when they were through with the operation and I entered and found out that they have killed Iwuanyanwu and the two other people in the house.

He said the original plan was not to kill them, but that they were killed after one of the killers realised that he had been recognised by one of the deceased. Mr Peter said his plan was to attack the pastor and remove some of his valuables, which he intended to share with the assassins.

He said after killing them, he took some of the pastor’s personal effects, including shoes, electronic gadgets, telephones and the jeep. He loaded the items in the pastor’s jeep, which he also attempted to take away but could not because of the security installed in the vehicle. The suspect said he later got someone who helped him start the car with which he carted away the pastor’s property.

Peter, who was arrested with his wife, Precious, said he regretted his action and absolved his wife of complicity. Precious wept as she revealed they had been married for about eight years and had three children. She added that she did not know her husband could be involved in such a heinous crime.

Other accomplices, Ikechukwu Nnadi and Fidelis Akubuokwu, were also arrested in connection with the murder case.

'Sexiest Man Alive' Idris Elba reveals why his fiancee Sabrina Dhowtre is the one

Idris Elba, who is People's 'Sexiest Man Alive' for 2018 has revealed why his fianceeSabrina Dhowtre is the one for him.

The British actor who proposed to beauty queen back in February told People in an interview that they “have good chemistry. She makes me laugh and we share common goals. She makes me happy. She makes me celebrate my successes and when I’m not too sure about stuff, she makes me think.”

On the day he proposed to Sabrina who is of Somali descent, Elba says his bended-knee proposal “was the most nerve-wracking thing for me ever.” “But in terms of wanting to make someone feel super special and feel my love, that was pretty romantic for me,” he adds in this week’s issue of PEOPLE.

According to the 46-year-old actor, he had planned to propose to Dhowre on Valentine’s Day “but that was going to be problematic” so he decided to do it at a screening of his film, Yardie, which he directed. “It was a little spontaneous if I’m honest,” he says. “I was at a cast and crew screening and among people I loved. We had all worked so hard for this project so I was like I’m doing it right now, here, today.”

Speaking on how his proposal quickly went viral when someone posted a video of it online, he said: “Yeah, I didn’t expect it to quite make British news and American news and Japanese news, for that matter,” Elba says, laughing. “It was quite a public affair. But it really wasn’t meant to be on the news.”

For plans of their wedding, Idris says “It’s a special day, but we both have our own ideas,” he adds. “I want about 19 deejays. There have to be, c’mon!”

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said he will consider buying another football club if Premiership club Arsenal won't be sold to him.

Dangote, who is a fan of the club has been wanting to buy the British club for years. He says he'll make a move only after he has completed one of the world’s biggest oil refineries in Lagos.

“By the time we’ve finished, we’ll be a $30bn company in terms of revenue,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg TV at the New Economy Forum in Singapore. “We’ll have an excess amount of cash to start playing around with.”

“I’m very attached to Arsenal but if he won’t sell, I might have to change,” said Dangote, 61 years old and worth $11.1bn. “I’m very much a fan of football. I'll like to have a club. I don’t have to own Arsenal.”

American businessman, Stan Kroenke who is worth $8bn is the sole owner of Arsenal club. He bought Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov’s 30 percent stake in August in a deal that valued the club at about £1.8bn. Kroenke is also the owner of National Football League’s Los Angeles Rams.
