Breaking: South African government denies xenophobic attacks

South African government have denied reports that their citizens are carrying out Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

The country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Monroe, made this known when he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in Abuja this morning.

Speaking at a media briefing after the meeting with Onyeama, Monroe said the recent attacks were not ''xenophobic'' in nature but are rather mere ‘sporadic acts of violence’.

According to Monroe, businesses belonging to other South Africans were also affected in the violence that erupted yesterday Monday September 2nd.

There can be no justification for any South African to attack people from other countries' - President Ramaphosa condemns Xenophobic attacks (Video)

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned Xenophobic attack on Nigerians and others in his country, saying security forces are on high alert.

According to Ramaphosa, “our security forces are on high alert. Whilst in no way, can we take away the sense of deep loss and unbearable pain you experience, as a country we commit ourselves to continue to work tirelessly to building the kind of South Africa, where indeed women and children will be safe.”

He went on to say; “I condemn the violence that has been spreading around a number of our provinces in the strongest terms. I’m convening the ministers in the security cluster today to make sure that we keep a close eye on these acts of wanton violence and find ways of stopping them.

“The people of our country want to live in harmony; whatever concerns or grievances we may have, we need to handle them in a democratic way. There can be no justification for any South African to attack people from other countries.

“We express our deep pain, support, solidarity and love to the families, friends and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives in the last month (Uyinene Mrwetyana, Leighandre Jegels, Nolunde Vumsindo, Meghan Cremer, Jesse Hess to mention but a few).”

Council forced to discuss stripping Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of titles after 1,700 sign petition

A Sussex council has been forced to set a date to discuss stripping Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles after a petition to that effect got 1,700 signatures.

A disgruntled resident set up a petition to remove the royal couple's Duke and Duchess of Sussex title. Charles Ross started the petition on the Brighton and Hove City Council website in July. At the moment, the petition now has more than 1,700 signatures, surpassing the 1,250 threshold for council to put it on a meeting agenda.

As a result, councillors have to give the bizarre request airtime.

Ross wrote in the petition: “We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to reject the usage of the titles “Duke of Sussex” and “Duchess of Sussex” by the individuals Henry (“Harry”) Windsor and Rachel Meghan Markle as morally wrong and disrespectful to the county of East Sussex.

"As residents of Brighton and Hove we call on Brighton and Hove Council to not refer to these individuals by such titles which we believe to be entirely non democratic and symbolic of the oppression of the general public by the wealthy elite.

“Neither will Brighton Council invite or entertain these individuals nor afford them any hospitality or courtesies above and beyond that of an ordinary member of the public.”

When the petition first emerged Sussex residents reacted with outrage, and one person tweeted: “Seriously!!! Mr Ross get a f****n life. I live in Brighton and you don’t speak for me.”

Another said: “What a joke people need to get a grip.”

Others called the petition an “embarrassment” and slammed it as “a waste of time”, with one person suggesting “the guy starting the petition needs to grow up”.

But because the petition gained enough signatures, a discussion must be had during the next meeting on October 24.

The request is unlikely to be backed by the council, who don’t have the power to remove their titles.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman confirmed it will be debated by full council, but stressed the proposal is not council policy.

Queen Elizabeth gave Harry and Meghan the title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they got married, and would be the one to strip them of it if she chose to.

This comes after reports that Meghan Markle hired a crisis management firm that once represented Harvey Weinstein in a bid to improve her image.

0m Property Scam: Lawyer Sulyman Abaya lied, we never apologized for arresting him - EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in a statement has said it has no reason to threaten or apologize to Sulyman Abaya, a lawyer and one of the suspects being investigated in a N20 million property fraud case by the Ilorin Zonal office of the Commission.

Abaya was arrested along with two other lawyers, Salman Rafiu and Saka Hammed, for alleged illegal acquisition and sale of a property belonging to Mr Adetunji Adedoyin, valued at about N20 million (Twenty Million Naira).

Adedoyin alleged in a petition that the suspects fraudulently obtained a court judgment with which they claimed and sold his property without his knowledge and consent. In getting the judgement, the suspects ensured that their victim, the petitioner did not get summons. Instead, they went ahead and provided defence lawyers for him, with whom he never had any discussion.

According to him, "I was informed that I was served summons all through the court proceedings, whereas it was R.A. Salman who put up his colleagues: Abaya Sulyman and Saka Hammed to stand for me and these lawyers forged my signature on some documents purporting my consent in court to the sale of my hostel".

Adedoyin further stated that "the truth of the matter is that I never set my eyes on these people (lawyers) prior to or during the court proceedings, neither did I participate directly or indirectly in the proceedings. I also was not aware of the proceedings from the beginning to the end."

Abaya was arrested on August 28, 2019 and released on bail after volunteering statement to the Commission. However in a twist, the suspect addressed the media in Ilorin on September 2, 2019, claiming he was innocent of the allegations against him and that operatives of the Commission, having realized their mistake, had apologized to him. He also added that he was profiled at gun-point.

To all intent and purposes, these are bouquet of lies packaged to elicit public sympathy and portray the Commission as inefficient, reckless and draconian.

In the first place, there is no reason for anyone to apologize to Abaya who remains a suspect under investigation. Apparently, Abaya has mistaken or deliberately wants to construe the administrative bail offered him by the Commission as exoneration of criminal complicity in the alleged fraud. The facts of the case suggest otherwise. He was merely offered bail to preserve his rights pending the conclusion of investigation.

Without prejudice to the facts of the case, it is puzzling that a lawyer of Abaya's standing would take a brief from third parties on behalf of a client who is not incapacitated and that lives in the same city with him.

For the record, it is not the practice of the EFCC to force suspects to be profiled. Taking mug shot of suspects of crime is standard procedure in criminal investigation. It beats the imagination why Abaya would want to be treated differently.
