Nigerian man invents breast cancer-detecting bra to save rural women

A primary school teacher has invented an affordable cancer-detecting bra to help women with early detection after a woman died from breast cancer.

Idris Dangana, 43, a Kano native, was unfulfilled with his job as a teacher and wanted to do more to help his community. Consequently, he decided to quit and develop his interest in learning computer and software development skills.

Idris confided in a friend, Isah, who had just returned from Burum Burum Village in Kano, where a woman had just died from breast cancer.

Idris said the story reminded him of the pains his sister went through when she had breast cancer. Fortunately, she survived it. This spurred him to seek a solution.

Idris, a graduate of physics education, started researching on cancer and set up BCScan, an innovation of the DiceHub (DIHub), which is behind the cancer-detecting device they would later come up with.

He was soon trying out different models and algorithms and they had to think of the best possible way to go about it, alongside doctors who collaborated on the project.

"We joined hands and talked on possible partnerships with a local NGO on breast cancer, we deepened our search about this deadly cancer by asking as many women in our network, including healthcare professionals. The feedback was scary," he told Daily Trust of his project.

Their solution Idris came up with was a brassier, fitted with Artificial Intelligence, that could detect tumours that are as small as 2mm in diameter.

The wearable device would guarantee early detection, Idris Dangana said and is especially targeted at women in rural areas with limited access to health care and the prohibitive cost of mammography.

However, mass production of the device is a challenge. Not finding the capacity to mass-produce in Nigeria, idris Dangana decided to seek collaboration abroad.

"We out-sourced to India and China to get the materials that we will use for manufacturing the cancer-detecting device produced," he said.

Idris explained that with his invention, women can be tested for as low as N1, 000 if the device is available at primary healthcare facilities and private hospitals nationwide. Those who want a personalized device would have to pay N15, 000 – N25, 000.

Though his idea is global, he is desirous of immediate local impact.

He said: "It is evident that the gap is too wide between Africa and the rest of the world, particularly Nigeria and the northern region to be precise. Though we are still learning, I believe over time, the impact could be felt and will serve as a wakeup call to many to co-join and change the narratives."

Shoprite announces plan to pull out of Nigeria

Shoprite, Africa’s biggest grocery retailer, has announced plans to leave Nigeria after 15 years.

The Cape Town-based retailer has started a formal process to consider the potential sale of all or a majority stake in its supermarkets in Nigeria, it said in a trading statement for the 52 weeks to end June, which was released on Monday, August 3.

Bloomberg reports that Shoprite is considering selling its Nigerian operations. This process was initiated after the retail chain said in November that it was reviewing its supermarket operations outside South Africa and would consider exiting certain countries if that would help reverse regional sales declines.

Shoprite has been battling currency-induced inflation surges in several other African countries.

International supermarkets (excluding Nigeria) contributed 11.6% to group sales, and reported 1.4% decline in sales from 2018. South African operations contributed 78% of overall sales and saw 8.7% rise for the year.

As a result of the COVID-19 lockdown, customer visits declined 7.4% but the average basket spend increased by 18.4%.

This comes just weeks after it was revealed that another popular retail store, Mr. Price Group, is making plans to close its Nigerian business to focus on its home market business in South Africa.

Below are reactions from Nigerians to the news that Shoprite is pulling out of Nigeria.

Mum brutally murdered friend after finding her in bed with fiancé on her birthday

Mum brutally murdered friend after finding her in bed with fianc? on her birthday
A mum, Amy Brown who was celebrating her 36th birthday with her fiancé Brandon Fayard, has killed her friend Amanda Hill, 35, after walking in on both of them in bed together.

According to a report by the Mirror Online published Sunday, 2nd August, Amy and her friends were celebrating her birthday in Prosser, Washington State back in February 9, 2018 when her fiance, Brandon told her he was going to bed, and then not long after, her friend Amanda went in to use the bathroom.

After 20 minutes passed Amy Brown (pictured below) went in to see why her friend had taken too long only to find her fiance and friend in bed.

Before the unfaithful day, Brown and Brandon ran a business together and also took care of her two boys from a previous relationship and three sons from Brandon.

Meanwhile Brown had met her friend Amanda years earlier.
Amanda who was also a mum quickly bonded with Amy Brown and they soon became good friends.

According to the Mirror Online, after Brown caught her fiance and friend in bed together, an argument ensued which made Brown storm off to smoke and drink outside the house.

As Brown was smoking downstairs, her friend, Amanda went to meet her.
Not long afterwards, at around 12.45am, two loud gunshots could be heard.
A horrified Brandon ran outside and found Brown cradling a bleeding Amanda in her arms.

Amanda had been shot twice in the torso. Brandon called 911 but after frantic work by the emergency services, Amanda was declared dead.

During police investigations, Brown admitted that she’d shot and killed her friend but claimed it had been for self-defence because Amanda had attacked her.

Brown described how she had found her friend and fiancé in bed together and that after yelling and swearing at them, she’d gone outside for a smoke and more drink.

Brown then said as she was smoking, Amanda attacked her from behind.
‘She knocked me on my face, and I turned around and she was trying to, like, choke me,’ Brown was recorded saying.

She described Amanda having her hands on her face and neck. ‘I felt like she was trying to choke me,’ she continued.

According to Brown she’d managed to break free and scramble over to her parked Cadillac Escalade car where she grabbed a .38-calibre revolver that was stashed in the door.
‘I grabbed it and I pulled it out and I was like, “Get off me,” and she wouldn’t get off of me so I fired,’ Brown admitted.
‘I fired two shots and when I fired two shots, she [shouted], “Amy, what the f***? Are you crazy?’’’ Then she noticed Amanda bleeding heavily.

Brown insisted that when she realised what she’d done, she’d immediately put pressure on the wound and screamed for Brandon to call 911.
‘And I kept the pressure on until police pulled me off of her,’ Brown said.

Brown insisted that she had fired in self-defence but when asked whether she thought Amanda was going to harm her, or whether she felt like her life was in danger, she admitted she didn’t feel like it was.

Upon her revelations police asked her   why did she deliberately get a gun, if she didn’t feel as though Amanda was a threat to her.
Amanda’s devastated family were left with a sad feeling that she had been killed and at the hands of a woman who was supposed to be her friend.

At the trial this year, prosecutors charged her (pictured in court below) with murder saying that Brown had flown into a jealous rage when she found her fiancé and friend in bed together and had shot Amanda twice in the torso in an act of anger.

They accused Brown of Murder because  admitted she didn’t feel like her life was in danger when she reached for a gun and shot her friend twice.

Amanda meanwhile continued to reiterate that she had retaliated in self-defence.

In the end, the jury deliberated for less than three hours and in March 2020  Brown, now 38, was found guilty of second-degree murder.
In June, she faced her sentencing.

According to her lawyers, Brown’s act that night hadn’t been planned and until then, she had been a law-abiding citizen.
The judge has sentenced Brown to 15 years in prison.
