Nigerians have taken to Instagram and Twitter to react to the prison break which occurred in a prison popularly known as “White House” in Edo State.

Earlier today, videos of prisoners trooping out of a prison was shared online and it was claimed thugs hijacked the End SARS protests and released prisoners in Edo State.

Following the jail break, the state government  imposed a dusk to dawn curfew.

However, Nigerians suspect something fishy about the jail break and they've taken to different social media platforms to share their opinions.

Some accused the state government of staging the jail break to get End SARS protesters off the streets. Others asked how the prisoners left through the open gates without resistance from prison guards. Others pointed out that the prisoners were all dressed in mufti, not in prison uniforms, as though it had been planned.

Genevieve Magazine publisher, Betty Irabor wrote: "This Edo State prison break is fishy."

Lauren Idahosa, the wife of Bishop Feb Idahosa, also questioned the prison break, writing: "How come we haven't heard one story by now about prison staff being killed or injured due to the prison breaks here in Benin? Warden, something doesn't seem right. In the process of your prisoners escape, there wasn't one injury?"

She added: "Anyone else sense something fishy here?"

Nigerian Governors appeal to #EndSARS protesters to call off the protest

The Nigeria Governor’ Forum (NGF) has appealed to #EndSARS protesters to call off the demonstrations across the country.

The appeal was made after an emergency meeting held on Sunday October 18. NGF Chairman and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi who condemned the attack on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State, added that criminal elements and hoodlums have hijacked the protests by maiming innocent citizens, looting and destroying properties.

The statement read in full;

ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 20TH TELECONFERENCE EMERGENCY MEETING OF THE NIGERIA GOVERNORS’ FORUM HELD ON SUNDAY, 18TH OCTOBER 2020

We, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), at an Emergency meeting held today, Sunday, 18th October 2020, deliberated extensively on the nationwide protests, riots and demonstrations.

Governors thereafter Resolved to:

  1. Condemn the attack on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State by armed persons while he was addressing anti-police brutality protesters in the state capital Osogbo; protesters are encouraged to engage with the government appropriately at both the national and State level to ensure that the protests are not taken over by hoodlums who are instigating a breakdown in law and order in many parts of the country.
  2. Activate a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to receive all cases of police brutality by officers of the disbanded SARS Unit. Each State is also expected to kickstart a compensation mechanism for all victims.
  3. Endorse the call by demonstrators for improved governance predicated on an enforcement regime that takes into cognizance the fundamental human rights and liberties of all citizens in the country;
  4. Act on all the Demands made by the EndSARS protesters raising some concerns with the shifting nature of the demands which creates uncertainty on the exact expectations and ultimate goal;
  5. Finally, appeal for the call off of protests as a continuation grossly exposes the fragile economic fundamentals of the country; particularly as criminal elements and hoodlums have hijacked the protests by maiming innocent citizens, looting and destroying

#EndSARS protest: Youths are entitled to peaceful protests - President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned against criminal elements hijacking protests across the country.

The President who noted that youths are entitled to a peaceful protest in a meeting with the  Minister of Youths and Sports Development Mr Sunday Dare, vowed to implement reforms he promised.

Speaking to state house correspondents after the meeting with President Buhari, the Minister pleaded for more time to enable the federal government implement some demands of the #EndSARS protesters as promised.

Dare said;

“Mr. President said the youths of this country have spoken and he has heard and he has since gone to work for the youths of our country.

“The President promised that he will ensure that the reforms he has promised are met, he will make sure that the reforms are long lasting and that the reforms will deliver for our country a police force that we will be proud of

“He appreciates the fact that they have brought the SARS issues to the fore through their peaceful protest.

“He recognises the fact that they have called upon the government to do what is necessary and that as the President and a father, he will make sure that the demands as put forward are met.

“The President said that as far as he is concerned, it’s important to allow the younger generation to exercise the freedom to protest and make sure that such protest is in a peaceful manner.

“He said that part of the demands that were made is to make sure that those protesting are protected and that any police officer that has in one way or the other attacked any protesters be brought to book.

“So the President thinks it’s a fundamental right, he thinks so long as the protest is peaceful and focused.

“He believes that the youths of this country have the right to demand for certain things”

Former Presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba and media personality Dele Momodu have tackled each other publicly over the current state of the nation.

The exchange began after Dele Momodu reshared a video of #EndSARS protesters vibing to veteran singer, Eedris Abdulkareem's hit "Jaga-Jaga'. Adamu who reacted to this, alleged that it is aimed at de-marketing Nigeria.

He tweeted;

Nigerian can never ever be jagaga. Maybe the singer is. Nigerian leaders at all levels can be jagaga but Nigeria cannot and will never ever be Jagaga. Nigeria is a nation of promise and will rise into its greatest potential soon. Down with de-marketers of Nigeria!

When asked to listen to the lyrics which centered on the country being ran down selfish and incompetent leaders, Adamu accused Dele Momodu of promoting a divisive action just like Nnamdi Kanu.

However after Dele Momodu fired back by asking if the good behaviour he is recommending or promoting is the same one that allows ''bandits to overrun some substantial parts of Nigerian soil or the ones that allows some hardened criminals to run riots and be pampered while smaller flies are killed,'' the former Presidential aspirant went on the defensive by saying "security is a collective effort".

EFCC confirms attack on its website, disowns lawyer who allegedly resigned from the agency to join the #EndSARS protest

EFCC confirms attack on its website, disowns lawyer who allegedly resigned from the agency to join the #EndSARS protest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that there were attempts to breach its website over the weekend.

The anti-graft in tweets shared on its official Twitter handle, also asked members of the public to disregard claims of a lawyer resigning from the agency to join the #EndSARS protest.

Dominic was accused of pulling a stunt as he "merely served as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in the Port Harcourt zonal office of the Commission from November 2019 to October 16, 2020 when he completed his national service."

It read;

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to a report trending in the social media regarding a certain Dominic Akpan who claims to have resigned from the employ of the Commission to join the #EndSARS Movement.

He cited undisclosed “ugly experiences” he had within the Commission for his action.

The EFCC wishes to inform the public that Akpan is not a staff of the Commission. He merely served as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in the Port Harcourt zonal office of the Commission from November 2019 to October 16, 2020 when he completed his national service.

He therefore could not have resigned from the EFCC to join the #End SARS Movement.

The stunt by Akpan is nothing but crass opportunism. And, seeking to achieve his selfish objectives riding on the crest of the popular protests by the youth, clamouring for institutional reform in Nigeria, is a disservice to the #EndSARS  Movement.

The EFCC therefore urges members of the public to disregard the report, in addition to the one which also claims that the Commission’s website had been hacked.

Though there were attempts, over the weekend, to compromise the website by some cyber criminals the attacks were successfully repelled. The EFCC website is up and running.
