President Trump approves troop deployment to Saudi Arabia in response to attacks on Saudi oil sites

US President Donald Trump on Friday, September 20th approved the deployment of thousands of American troops to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in response to an attack on Saudi oil facilities.

The approval was announced at the Pentagon by Defense Secretary Mark Esper. He said the deployment was at the request of Saudi Arabia, after its oil facilities were targeted in drone and missile attacks.

“In response to the Kingdom’s request, the president has approved the deployment of U.S. forces, which will be defensive in nature and primarily focused on air and missile defense, ” Esper said.

He added that “all indications” are that Iran was responsible for the attacks. The troops will be deployed in a “defensive posture” to increase security, Esper said, though it was not immediately clear how many additional troops would be sent to the region.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Dunford said it would not be “thousands” of troops. Trump had in recent days indicated the administration believed Iran was behind the incident, but officials had refrained from saying so definitively.

DSS files seven fresh charges against Omoyele Sowore including; 'treasonable felony and cyberstalking President Buhari'

The Federal Government has slammed a fresh seven-count charge against detained political activist and convener of the RevolutionNow Protest, Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of treason, money laundering and cyberstalking President Buhari.

The case was filed at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court and it comes 24 hours to the expiration of the 45-day period the court permitted the DSS to hold him. Also charged with Sowore in case FHC/ ABJ/CR/235/2019, is Olawale Adebayo Bakare (aka Mandate), who was arrested in Osogbo, Osun state.

According to the charge, the Federal Government alleges that the defendants conspired to commit treasonable felony, contrary to section 516 of the criminal Code Act Cap C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and punishable under the same section of the Act.

“That you Omoyele Stephen Sowore , Male Adult of No 1 Mosafejo Street, Kiribo, Ese-Odo LGA, Ondo State, Olawale Adebayo Bakare {aka Mandate} Male, Adult of Olaiya Arca, Oshogbo LGA Osun State and others at large, under the eagis of Coalition for Revolution (CORE), sometimes in August 2019 in Abuja, Lagos and other parts of Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did conspire amongst yourselves to stage a revolution campaign on 5th day of August 2019 tagged #RevolutionNow” aimed at removing the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during his term of office otherwise known than by constitutional means”.

The government also accuses Sowore of committing “cyberstalking”, contrary to section 24 (1) (b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, 2015 and punishable under the same section of the Act. Cyberstalking means the repeated use of electronic communications to harass or frighten someone, for example by sending threatening emails.

Another count accuses him of illegal transfer of funds contrary to section 15(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and punishable under the same section of the Act.

The government alleges that Sowore on April 2, at Lagos and Abuja, transferred by means of SWIFT wire, the sum of $19, 975 from his United Bank of Africa Plc Account No. 3002246104 credited by City Bank, New York City, USA, into Sahara Reporters Media Foundations GTB Account No. 0424048298 with the aim of concealing or disguising the illicit origin of the funds.

It alleged that he also transferred $16, 975 from the same UBA Account credited to him by LANDRUM of 7e 146 W 29th Streeet, New York, NY10001, USA, via City Bank Plc, the aim to conceal the illicit origin of the funds.

The charge, which was endorsed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, was signed by a senior state counsel, Mr. A.M. Alilu. FG has already lined-up six witnesses against the defendants, including bank officials from UBA and GTB.

The detained activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the last general election. He has been in custody of the Department of State Service, DSS, since Agust 2 when he was arrested.

The Court had granted DSS leave to detain him for 45 days to enable the agency to conclude its investigations. The court gave the agency the leave to apply for extension of the detention order after September 21.

DSS had told the court that Sowore got foreign sponsorship to wage war against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. It tendered evidence to prove that Sowore held meetings with both the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN.

Indian police arrest Nigerian man, Chuka Onwumere for staying illegally in the country

A Nigerian man identified as Chukwa Onwumere Zef, along with a Sri Lankan citizen have been arrested and detained by the Kancheepuram district police near Mamallapuram on charges of staying illegally in India.

The two men were caught during a door-to-door inspection ahead of the informal meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese president Xi Jinping scheduled to take place in the coastal town from October 11 to 13.

While the travel documents of the Nigerian had expired, the Lankan national was found to have entered the country illegally a decade ago. The Nigerian was staying in the house of Nagamuthu in Venpurusham, a village near Mamallapuram.

“Both his passport and visa have expired but he hasn’t applied for extension,” said a police officer. The Mamallapuram police registered a case and detained him. Inquiries revealed that Raja Nayagam, 41, a native of Killinochi in Sri Lanka had entered India illegally in 2009 and was working as a painter. He was staying at the house of Balakrishnan, police said.

Kancheepuram district police said the house owners will be interrogated about housing foreign nationals in their premises without checking for relevant documents. The intensive checks will continue in the coming days, a senior police officer said. The two detained on Friday, September 20th were booked under Section 12 of The Passports Act and section 14 of the Foreigners Act.

Presidency says UN rapporteur report on insecurity in Nigeria is disappointing

The Presidency has expressed its disappointment with UN Rapporteur Report of violence in Nigeria which it said was silent on intra-group, inter-group and community violence.

The preliminary Statement released by the UN Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard at the end of her 12-day mission to Nigeria read “Nigeria is a pressure cooker of internal conflicts and generalised violence that must be addressed urgently, with issues like poverty and climate change adding to the crisis. The overall situation that I encountered in Nigeria gives rise to extreme concern.”

However the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, condemned the report and also stated that Benue, Taraba, Cross River States and other parts of the country had casualties and displaced persons as a result of intra-group, inter-group and community violence.

Admitting that violence between farmers and herders which has a long history in Nigeria spiked in recent years, the Presidency said peace has returned to affected areas due to the effectiveness with which the Federal and State authorities responded.

“We are saddened that the rapporteur did not address intra-ethnic conflicts and cattle rustling as key elements in herder/farmer conflicts. In Benue State for instance, the Tiv/Jukun conflict and kidnapping is a major problem. We are glad that local communities have fully realized this, and scholars with a strong motivation for peace and stability in their communities and the nation are trying to address the problem.

“Ignoring the salient issues will not help to solve the problem. If you are going to address violence and the general insecurity in Nigeria, incidents everywhere should be part of the narrative. Not addressing this might make it easier to blame the Federal Government, but national peace and security is community based and a collective responsibility.

“Arrests, prosecution and locking people up are only small parts of National Security and Safety strategy,” Mr Shehu said.

The Presidency also said the work of a US scholar of Tiv extraction, Professor Dick Adzenge deserved special mention for attempting to get aspects of violence addressed. It also argued that arrests, prosecution and locking people up were only small parts of national security and safety strategy.

“Professor Adzenge and a few others like him are working with young people, traditional rulers and communities to seek peaceful resolution of conflicts and encourage peaceful co-existence.

“The sort of effort we are talking about here has so far revealed interesting facts about the problem in Benue State that cannot be ignored.

“And it is the sort of support we seek from the UN rapporteur in reporting, not the report that scratches the surface of the subject then ends up blaming the government under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. The UN representative needs to be truthful and even-handed in her assignment,” he said
