One year after, LIB remembers Congolese music legend, Papa Wemba who died on stage

Exactly one year ago, Papa Wemba, the legendary Congolese singer and musician famously known as 'King of Rumba' collapsed and died on stage while performing at Festival des Musiques Urbaines d’Anoumabo (FEMUA) – in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on April 24, 2016.

His death at the age of 66 came as a shock to the world. His death also served as a wake up call for artists, their managers, promoters and event organisers to see the need to employ the services of healthcare service providers for major concerts to provide first aid incase of an emergency.

In his lifetime, Papa Wemba founded the Viva La Musica – a DR Congo band in 1977, made a name for himself in France and Belgium and had collaborations with international artists including Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder during his long music career.

In February 2003, the singer was suspected of being involved in a network that allegedly smuggled hundreds of illegal immigrants from the DR Congo into Europe and was arrested at his home in Paris. He was found guilty by a Belgian court in June 2003 and was sentenced to fifteen months imprisonment and a €22,000 fine.

After his release in October of the same year after posting bail, he recounted the jail term in ‘Numéro d’écrou’, a song off his Somo Trop album.

His first year memorial will be celebrated by his fans in Kenya, Congo and Ivory Coast.

'Why exactly do we take our marital issues to social media' - Basketmouth talks about the incessant use of social media

Comedian, Basketmouth took to his Instagram page to ask various questions concerning the use of social media and why do users feel it is necessary to put everything out there. Read what he wrote below..

Questions:
Why do we even feel the urge to show off our wealth on social media?
Does it breed hate, love or jealousy?
Why exactly do we take our marital issues to social media?
Since when did the world become our shrinks or marriage counselors?
When did our validation start depending on strangers?
Since when did IG become the judge of our lifestyle, personality, behavior and character?
Why do we spend more time showing people everything about our personal lives rather than living the life itself?
Why are we so hungry for followers on our social media platforms?
Does the amount of followers improve our quality of life? Does it add anything to ones talent?
Why am I even asking these questions....what's my business sef?

North Korean government detains American professor amid rising tensions

The North Korean government has arrested and detained an American professor at the Pyongyang International airport as the professor, surnamed Kim, was about leaving the Asian country.

The development comes hours after Japan announced that two of its Naval destroyers have began conducting joint naval drills with America's USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group in the western Pacific Ocean.

The U.S doesn't have any diplomatic relations with North Korea and uses Sweden to negotiate it's interests in North Korea hence the Swedish embassy on Sunday confirmed the arrest and detention of Kim.
"He was prevented from getting on the flight out of Pyongyang," Martina Aberg, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Sweden in Pyongyang told CNN. "We don't comment further than this."This is not the first time the North Korean government is detaining American citizens, in the last 5 years at least two other US citizens and a British journalist have been detained by Kim Jong-Un's led secretive government.

Otto Warmbier, 21, a student at the University of Virginia, was detained at Pyongyang airport on January 2 last year after visiting the country with a tour group. He has since been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly removing a political sign from a hotel wall.

Kim Dong Chul, a naturalized US citizen of Korean origin, was arrested on October 2015. Last year, North Korea sentenced him to 10 years of hard labor on espionage charges.

Buhari now operating as ceremonial, part-time president – Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that Nigerians did not elect General Muhammadu Buhari to function as “Friday President”, adding that he (Buhari) was now acting more like ceremonial and part-time President. The governor, who said he was glad that his constructive criticism was getting to the President and his handlers, noted that it was not enough for the President of a country like Nigeria to be seen in public only while attending Friday Jumat service at the Presidential Villa, videos of his activities should be made public too.

Speaking on Sunday, through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said it was necessary for Nigerians to be properly informed about the well-being of their president.

He accused some close allies of the President of deliberately shielding him and preventing him from attending to his health so as to continue to run the government on the basis of “Mr President has directed” even when the President did not direct anything.

“That’s why Nigerians are told every day that the President said this and that with the President neither speaking directly nor attending any official function. This is not good for the image of a country like Nigeria that is struggling to get out of economic recession,” the governor said.Governor Fayose, who said by virtue of the his old age, the President could be susceptible to illness, advised that “President Buhari should rather be allowed to take proper care of his health while the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo acts constitutionally as the president.

“However, it is doubtful if those cabals that are obviously running their own Presidency within President Buhari’s Presidency will allow him to take a long vacation, probably outside Nigeria to take care of himself.”The governor insisted that Nigerians must hear the voice of their President and see him physically, not through surrogates or the cabal operating behind the scene.

“It is only when the President is seen and heard physically that Nigerians will believe that they are not being ruled by a part-time and ceremonial president, whose powers are being exercised on his behalf by some cabal,” he said.

"Spaghetti is not an African Man favourite @mikel_john_obi deserves better.... Learn how to prepare Fufu or pounded yam with bitter leaf soup or Oha soup," iamjennykedo on Instagram said.

Looks like Olga has had enough of such comments. She finally responded to her 'critics', advising ladies not to be become desperate housewives to please anyone and that there are other ways to a man's heart than his stomach.
